My divine touch elite warrior nephil archer used razordisks on Nodicuas. I save the remaining razordisks, fine razordisks, and fine lances for a long time before I decided to just sell them. They do great damage, but the weight sucks and it's easier with bows. No keeping track of ammo even for less damage. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I'm not against mods having their fun. As for topics, some of them can be enjoyable, but the polls are getting to be worthless. The one for getting Exile 4 when Jeff has said repeatedly that it will never happen was just too much. Some new members are getting too lazy to read the old threads before they start posting. The forums are rapidly filling up with junk polls. I was wondering if some forums are restricted whether the cookies could be read to restrict new postings in a similar way. Something like preventitive maintanence. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

The vahnatai, who I can't remember the name of either, is the one grumbling around the kitchen area about having records of everything. You can ask him about Borgia Toadstools only after getting the quest. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

The highest level spells are at the end in Bargha in the Abyss. I listed the spellbooks in another thread. Spellbooks and training for spells are interchangeable so don't wait. They can be learned at any time and in any order. Certain spells like Augmentation, Enduring Shield, etc. don't increase with learning more levels and the duration rarely is a factor. Gymnastics has one level as a reward in the Giant Lands past the Abyss. The only skills to buy before training are Nature Lore, Arcane Lore and First Aid (wait until Cotra). Fort Dranlon gives an extra level in Nature Lore and First Aid as quest rewards (don't get reward before buying 2 levels - I lost a level that way). There is a thread listing the cheapest places to buy skills. That list will give you the best indication on when to buy skills. Money for training and spells is tight until the Great Cave. Luck and Endurance are given as quest rewards without being affected by earlier training. The wishing well in the Great Cave gives a special for 50 coins. Having roomed with a psych major, I always worry about these topics. Especially when I heard his misinterpretations. He almost killed me when he thought my using the right hand rule to do my engineering homework was flipping him off repeatedly. I didn't notice that I was down to one finger when I was using my hand to figure vector directions. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Leave? Why would anyone want to leave here? Have you been out there lately? The people are insane. Well maybe that's not a good arguement considering the stability of some posters. This is where I go to get away from reality. There's usually something here that's worth reading. If not I can always go back through old threads for a good laugh. It just the quality of some newbies, especially after & in the end, makes me prefer the older members. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

One of the main differences between Exile and Avernum is that in Exile you can clear a dungeon, step outside, and come back in and the monsters are all there except for specials. In Exile it's easy to build up experience by reclearing a dungeon that's not too hard for your level. Money is never a problem. Both games have lousy AI's. The longer you play, the easier it is to exploit the flaws. The complaints are that people want the best from both systems. Or at least the source code for Blades of Exiles so they can tinker with it to eliminate preceived flaws. I like both for different reasons. Going back to Exile means having to use different strategies than Avernum where a monster stays dead and the loot is usually still lying on the floor. Spire is easier to destroy than Bargha. You can get through the monsters and traps if you don't want to kill either one. Since Spire is allied with the Darkside Loyalists it might help your decision. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |
Restarting or continuing? in Avernum 4 | |

You're not that far along that you can restart and catch up quickly. Having a thief that isn't a mage isn't helpful in A4. The unlock spell and mage skills combine to get you through locked doors and chest with difficulties over 20. The skill points could have been used elsewhere. Otherwise your party is fine. I prefer to start with two spellcasters that have both priest and mage spells. The duplication means more attacks and/or healing as needed. There are a few threads covering party formation. quote:First in combat is usually the highest dexterity party member. Having a lot of quick action can move one ahead of a higher dexterity. Even with both being the same the order can sometimes shift. Haste/slow, dexterity, and quick action are all factors in determining party order each round. The combat system is changed in each game just a little bit. I hate the earlier Avernum ones. You have to learn how to take advantage of the quirks in each one. I didn't know until I read the thread that blessing 4 times in some games can create god-like damage and the same with protection can make you effectively invulnerable in combat Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Thrac in Fort Saffron needs someone to go through the cells in the southeast corner into the Darkside Loyalist camp and kill the bandits there (2 levels). I don't know if you also need to kill their spy in his fort. The Darkside Loyalists hidden under Erika's ruins are accessible from the Dark Lands by finding the secret trapdoor. There is a glowing rune that needs to be stepped on to reveal the trapdoor. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I slipped onto the list thanks to A4. Now that the questions are winding down for that I'm having to do more in General and the older Avernum Trilogy and Exile forums. I think the reason that newer members made the top 10 was that some members cut back like Thuryl and Synergy. Any chance that starting polls can be restricted to having a post count over 200? It might save time in eliminating new polls by new members. I have to drop in several times a day to see threads before they get locked. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

The trick is that one piece is on the east side of the river. At least one and maybe two are hidden by secret passages. You don't really need to do this except it means one fewer step in reaching Erika. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Jeff took a lot of shortcuts to get Avernum 4 out. The plot is weak, the graphics are swiped from Geneforge, and he got rid of elevations. It comes down to how much you like the game. It does get better after the demo, but if you aren't having fun then wait for Avernum 5. There are some good features like the combat system is better so you don't have wait as an option. There are area spells like in Exile. The skills like first aid are actually worth getting. It's just that the game is incomplete. Most of the problems will be fixed in A5, but I got though the game by running a singleton for fun since Jeff said it wasn't supposed to be possible. I think in A5 he's really going to make that happen. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Blasting party members is just something that fighters have to suffer with when they engage monsters. I always try to save a healing spell for that little problem. Avernum 4 took care of friendly fire. But I still like area effects like fireball for clearing out monsters that are hiding around corners and out of line of sight. Jeff keeps tinkering with the games in response to user complaints. I started with Exile 3 and found going back to Exile 1 a jolt. You get use to the differences and Exile always has better spells. Avernum has better graphics, but the combat system is only now catching up. Now that I'm in Geneforge 1 I get an idea of where most of Avernum 4 gets most of it bad features. There is no blaming the plot on anything but Jeff not putting much effort into a good storyline. If the Darkside Loyalists had been behind everything, then it might have been better. Each game has its good points and hopefully Jeff will incorporate the best features from all of them for Avernum 5. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

The golems shouldn't be that much of a problem. You must be doing something wrong in killing them. Use lightning spray from hasted mages to blast them to rubble so you can get past the area. I got past as a singleton without shutting it off. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I'm not sure if there are more. Besides the Easter Egg there may be a few to the other major cities. I remember Jeff mentioning in the Exile Hint book that he listed only the important ones needed for the game. I never looked in the game for additional ones. The identify spell pays off in the long run when you have lots to identify or want to decide what is worth hauling out of a dungeon. By the middle of the game you no longer want to carry everything since money is no longer tight. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

From the hint book because I couldn't remember: Ent Bel Tor - Formello - there is a secret passage in the southeast to the outside Owa Tah Ful - Angierach - Tower of Magi in dresser as part of a quest There is one more for the last button in the Easter Egg thread. There were more in Exile 2, but I never bothered to see if they were here. [ Monday, April 17, 2006 21:25: Message edited by: Randomizer ] Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |
