Where the heck is G.'s letter? in Avernum 4

The letter is on a body in the southwest part of the Eastern Gallery. Go west from West Cotra and I think it was a little north. The quest is to remove a gremlin from his storehouse, the gated area where you can't pick the lock in the demo. You get some gems as a reward and his storehouse has a lot of items that you can sell. Easy quest and there is slightly more experience for killing the gremlin.

The barrier is upstairs in Giscard's house. The vengeful shade appears when you rob Giscard, I guess. I only looked in the box at the Ruby Breastplate and some other things.

For the Mac version you need to download version 1.0.1 (about 20M) and then the patch v1.0.3 (1.2M) to upgrade. The preferences file from the v1.0 should still work so you can play the full game. There were too many changes for the patch to work with the original game. The icon when you move the cursor over it should show the version number.

The Windows version was done later so you only need the patch.

Update: The Demo version that is currently downloaded may have the patch. Check what is written about it.

The route involves going down and up between the two levels several times. A clue that you are on the right path is that you pass Sleater. After seeing him to the north, keep going west . There are several minor side trips to get items. When you run into a group of four adventures blocking a route then you are near the Bandit Keep.

Singleton in Torment

Finished the Western Wastes, Basalt Fortress, the 3 shades, and the Gnass quest. I'm at level 40 and 250 experience away from the next level. I can finally open difficulty 40 doors which opens the 3 doors in that area, one of which just saves time in moving. I killed everything that moved and the pylons for fun and money. Although I probably got a third of a level out of the pylons alone.

I'll take a break while I figure out what I want to wear for my assault on the Spire Fortress and what to do with my skill points. I thinking of saving them for moving my mage spell level up so I can have Strong Daze and later Arcane Shield.

Weber's Harrington series is a sci-fi version of C. S, Forester's Horatio Hornblower series and just about any other military series looking at the rise to the top of a single character. It has some originality but it is derivative.

You have others like Joel Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame with a group of fantasy roleplaying gamers sent into their game world with their memories and their characters abilities. They find out quickly that it's real and that the gamemaster was a mage on the losing end of a duel.

Jerry Pournelle has a few series on military themes but it's been a while since he's completed one. Some of them are derived from H. Beam Piper's work especially Gunpowder God that is also known as Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen. Maybe the next time they reprint Piper's works they will get greater recogniton.

Hardiness and Armor in Avernum 4

Hardiness increases armor at 1 point equals 1% reduction. So Hardiness 20 means 20% less damage which is what you got. It works better versus fire, energy, cold where it does 2% per point of hardiness.

It's hard but you can raise enough skills: dexterity, endurance, and hardiness to 8 to get resistance which does 4%. Helps your fighters but not spellcasters.

Cerebrous Worm is in the Honeycomb. Enter it along the north path. Go west near the top of the map section and go north near the center. It's in the next map section north. The route parallel to the eastern one that goes to Sleater.

Dickens wrote for the mass media. That explains alot about the length of those novels that were originally published in serial form chapter by chapter. Only some of his works are true classics like A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol. Others have obtained classic status from popularity.

The Wall Street Journal had an interesting review of H. G. Wells and his works. It said that he failed to get admitted for advanced studies in science. He took his revenge in War of the Worlds by having the Martians destroy that school. We got all that science fiction stories because he could go on in his original career choice.

Robert Jordan ruined WoT with the last few books. I knew it was going to be a long series, but it seems that nothing much is happening in world time versus book length. He could have had a classic series if he hadn't ruined it. I still have to read the last 2 books, but I've got better choices ahead.

Martin I've only read a bit, but I liked his style.

Orson Scott Card was best in Ender's Game, but after that I didn't like the others as much.

Unfortuneately most science fiction books are just churned out for the money.

With 12 tool use boosted to 15 with tinker's gloves and bauble I can get through all the traps now. Pity I only get 1 experience point each for the effort.

Add in the incantor's ring and enchanter's robe my mage spell level is then 11 and I get 2 more for spellcraft. I can't use the clarity talisman with the tinker's bauble. This lets me open locked doors up to 35. Doesn't help with the last spellbook in the castle since my arcane lore is only 12. I still need to raise that for the last spellbooks in the game.

Having fun blasting pylons. At over 300 spell points, I can get from 2 to 5 pylons a trip depending onn what else is in the area. A few more hours will clear everything up to the Basalt Fortress. I must have missed the post about the eyebeast creature guarding the main bridge up the center. That will probably take a few tries. I really hate when I get terrified. To get demonslayer I had to use items and intelligence to 66% mental resistance and add in mindshield to have a chance.

Abisynthe is found by going from Almaria south along the river until you find a way underground. There are 2 entrances in the map section along the south wall. Don't forget to fight the icy crystalmists that are part of that cave. They have 2 wisdom crystals (one is cached).

Randolph Halfbreed is 2 map sections west of Abisyhthe in a underground complex that is guarded by a nephil warrior with 2 terror wolves. It can also be reached from the Blosk refugee camp from one of the building that hold the bandit Lott.

Explore to the north of the shade and move west going counterclockwise. Visit the job board. You don't need to get close to the shade or see anyone in the upper town level until after you visit the Castle.

Robert Asprin's I]Myth Adventure [/I] series starting with Another Fine Myth will probably never move from cult status to classics. The illustrations for some of the books and the graphics novels, Myth Adventures and Myth Conceptions, were done by Phil Foglio. Foglio did the illustrations for Avernum 1-3 that illustrate the different skills used in the game.

His books show that technology and magic can do the same functions depending upon the society.

P. G. Wodehouse books are old enough to be classics, but most people don't want to consider something so fuuny to be classed with serious literature. Even though James Thurber, Mark Twain, and other author use humor. The PBS serieses of Jeeves and Wooster stories mention in the introductions about the famous authors that like his works, but have trouble admitting it in literary circles.

I suppose Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time will someday be considered a classic for his use of myth and howit developes and is interpreted.

Not a literary reference, but popular culture. Test number 5 near Fort Remote. You are the Weakest Link in the test for unity.

For the record my singleton is not antisocial. He just doesn't need a others sucking up experience and money. If he needs friends he can always summon some up.

This isn't counting equipment. I've got all three, tinker's gloves and bauble for tool use, and a bunch of other neat stuff that I switch to help out in certain occasions. That was base stats from using skill points and buying training. I'm just giving people an idea about what a singleton will look like at different stages so they can plan how to spend the money and points.

Singleton in Torment

Well I finally had enough time to run my Nephil PS DT through the Great Cave and adjacent areas. I'm now going through the tunnels west of Fort Remote.

I reached level 38 and have used 23 wisdom crystals/knowledge brews. Missed 2 crystals because I haven't found a fine waveblade for Grall-Ihnro's quest. Haven't used the 5 crystals/brews that are marked NY. I'll save sangging those for later.

At this point I've got a strength 4, dexterity 8, intelligence 6, endurance 8, melee weapons 2, bow 10, thrown weapons 10, quick action 2, mage 9, priest 14, arcane lore 12 (I want spells), spellcraft 2, hardiness 3, defense 5, tool use 12, nature lore 3, first aid 3, luck 5, quickstrike 2, blademaster 10, gymnastics 4, magery 13, resistance 2, magical efficeincy 8, and sharpshooter 12.

I found that pylons are worth 9 to 10 experience at level 25 and drop to 4 for level 38. Oh well, at least the provide nice treasure. Next post will be after the Basalt Fortress and the shades. I'll have enough to get another priest spell level and divine retribution.

While 4 coins is the cutoff, some items stack to exceed that. Food, red lanterns stack 3 coins per 4, thread stacks for 5 coins per 4 spools, etc. Otherwise they just occupy space and get grabbed by accident.

If you are running a singleton, then buying skills helps save skill points. For a normal game you need the cash for high skill point skills and spells.
