The third test is nearest the Chitrach tunnels entrance east of Fort Dranlon in that small building. Go north along the east edge to the next map section north. When the path reaches a 6 way intersection go northeast.

It doesn't take that long to search them all. At least it's easier than the Honeycomb where you have to keep shifting levels.

Let's try this for at least a few days. I like being an Explorer better than some of the earlier choices like Merchant.

Custom titles are fun and they help me distinguish some people that keep changing their PDN's.

I had a similar problem when I hit a capital letter. Luckily I got out without having to restore the game.

Avernum 2 -:- Ivory Key in The Avernum Trilogy

The key is found in the center of the tower on the lowest level if I remember correctly. I know it was in Exile 2 and somethings carried over. You need the key to get past some obstacle in the archives' entrance area.

Who has good loot? in Avernum 4

Why shoot innocent NPC's? The useful treasure doesn't significantly affect game play and the experience is slight. You can get better equipment earlier on, but it will just encourage Jeff to make them harder to kill in future games. You'll start seeing him make certain ones unkillable after that fiasco with killing the Portal Mage in Fort Avernum.

After the last rankings post, I thought I would need over 200 to make the top 10. The drop off is probably due to Avernum 4 being out in both versions. The speculation that it was the cause will be confirmed if the numbers don't increase next month. Maybe things will quiet down until Geneforge 4.

Of course with Thuryl back the numbers may increase. Could a single person cause a spike without doing something to cause a ban? I don't mean double posting, posting something in every thread just to inflate count, or other annoying behavior like polls or messages that should be PM.

Recheck the levers. It took me a few tries, but I had the same problem. I'm sure I had to go back and do them all again. One of them is wrong or shifted since you did them.

I'm not sure I want a 1000 posts in order to be considered a Merchant. Innkeeper is even worse. New Arrival makes sense but I'm sure that you can get better choices.

Patrick's Tower Books **spoilers** in Avernum 4

There are 7 books in the tunnels under Patrick's Tower. You only get a reward for the first 5. Try to return another to see the message you get.

I forget where all of them were, but there should be one in the barrier sealed areas south of Lord Bhoralon. There are others in the northern parts of the tunnels near the Memorial Lands.

Just clear the tunnels and you will find lots of unique items that will make the effort worth while.

A3: Poor mages! in The Avernum Trilogy

The Exile Mage spells were much better than the equivalent Avernum spells. It took to A4 before area effects spells returned instead of targeting for multiple creatures. So black shades and guardians could only really be hit by weapons. Cloud of blades was a weak area spell that still needed to be targeted on a PC or summoned creature.

The strongest Exile mage spell shockwave has no Avernum equivalent except for Divine Retribution for priests. I used to use 4 castings of shockwave to obliterate almost everything on the screen.

Mage spells are best at low levels until you can get the high level priest spells.

I used to use a bug that wound spell worked against magic resistant monsters like Rakshashas.

He'll be back, but maybe not until A6. Jeff's description of A5 seems to imply that it will be in Avernum and not the Empire.

I really wanted that weapon. Too bad it's scripted that he escapes. I kept him terrified for most of the encounter and blocked from running away. Maybe if I filled the hall with summoned creatures I could have messed up the script.

Leave it this way. There should be some way to discourage random acts of violence for almost no experience and treasure.

It might teach people to read the instructions and the part about not kill people until there usefulness is totally over.

Fireblast Spell? in Avernum 4

Fireblast spellbooks are in Tower Colony and Patrick's Tower. I think learning the spell is either Rone in the Castle or Gladwell in Bargha. It's not that useful for the spell cost.

Watch the map in the lower left corner. The active pylons are in red and the inactive ones are in blue. It will help you with whatever you decide upon.

Why bother with this poll. Jeff's said it's never going to happen. Avernum and Averforge are the future. The best that's going to happen are BoE scenarios.

Thieve's World in General

I read it when it first started. It had a great idea of getting various writers to make stories for a shared universe (city - Sanctuary). The writers exchanged ideas and backstory information to go with the history from Robert Asprin. Kind of like scenarios for BoE or BoA.

Then Lynn Abbey got involved and the main storyline went downhill. The original writers left and/or wrote their own books to get away from the coming disaster. By the time the first series stopped it was only concerned with the Wizard War. The idea that writers wouldn't make major changes to other writer's characters went away. I hated the end and haven't tried the new series. I like the writers but don't like the plot line.

Janet Morris wrote 3 novels to take some characters north from Sanctuary and define her world view. The last few antholgies read like a novel with each writer getting a different chapter. Everything was integrated and anyone writing was forced into the storyline.

The first 4 anthologies were the best. The first is the one to read before the concept failed.

Are FRPGs inherently gerontocratic? in General

Not all mythologies have the powerful artifacts from the Dawn of Time. Norse myths have numerous items that are created and used in "modern" times. Thor's hammer, Odin's ring, various swords, the Volsung hoard that is the basis for the Neibelung cycle of Wagner are just a few examples.

It's easier to use an old artifact, power, and/or villian to be the main plot point. Tolkien was a linguist interest in the old myths and legends. So having an extensive backround where the major figures are from the deep past makes sense.

It also means that in other genres that something from the past forms the problem and the solution. Modern problems aren't always as interesting for some readers.

Point of the Demonslayer? in The Exile Trilogy

The only thing Demonslayer helps with is demons. As a two-handed weapon it isn't helpful otherwise. Two separate weapons or a shield is better for most of the game. It isn't needed for Exile games, it is just one more thing to do in the games. Even in the Avernum versions it isn't that useful.

quote:
Interestingly enough, I work at a grocery store, and we sell more challah bread during Passover than any other time of the year. Now, if Jews can't eat levened bread during Passover, who the heck is buying all that challah?

The customers may not be Jewish. Once in college on a Sunday I got woken up by a delivery. I'm looking through the box that I had forgotten about ordering and started naming the contents: bagels, cream cheese, lox, .... My Catholic roommate jumps out of bed and says, "I'll get you a knife." That's when I found out how much he liked Jewish foods.

Read the scripts for Fort Avernum. Somewhere there should be a section about allowing you now to go to Fort Spire. There will be a flag that has to be set to let the portal now give you Fort Spire.

Or you could start over again and wait a little longer to kill him.

Frozen by the Pylons in Avernum 4

Even after shutting off power to Radiant pylons in the Darkside Loyalist camp near Fort Saffron, it takes a lot of damage to destroy them. Acid spray and arrows at range work after eliminating everyone on that level. To do it faster, have a fighter close with the pylon and heal him in addition to spells. Lightning spray is expensive way when there are so many of them.
