Let's try the I Ching. Usually, you're supposed to formulate a question first, but...

-----
-----
----- <- 9
-- -- <- 6
-- --
-- -- <- 6

Which appears to be...

12. P'i - Standstill

Judgement:

Standstill. Evil people do not further
The perseverance of the superior man.
The great departs; the small approaches.

The Image

Heaven and earth do not unite:
The image of Standstill.
Thus the superior man falls back upon his inner worth
In order to escape the difficulties.
He does not permit himself to be honored with revenue.
---
Six at the beginning means:
When ribbon grass is pulled up, the sod comes with it.
Each according to his kind.
Perseverance brings good fortune and success.

Six in the third place means:
They bear shame.

Nine in the fourth place means:
He who acts at the command of the highest
Remains without blame.
Those of like mind partake of the blessing.
---
And I realize I can't interpret this one. Out of practice. Or perhaps I'm too tired, or not tired enough. :P

Edit: Although, on second thought, "Standstill" is exactly what I feel like right now.

Pick up your monitor. Slide your keyboard under it. Set the monitor down. Admittedly, it is very hard not to notice this.

However, some monitors have a very low set frame (a space of just a few centimeters between the desk and the lower rim). If the keyboard just barely fits under this frame, and you are working on a very small desk, the keyboard can slide beneath the screen, possibly pressing a few keys down.

Subtle, Melora admonished herself. Perhaps the long separation from her people had indeed worn her instincts - she was far less averse to displaying emotional reactions than she should be. Her expression when she mentioned the doors just now must have been at least noticed, if not read, by Sequoia.

Still, these doors sounded tremendously interesting.

Steel. Like the passage back in Verwey. Was the design similar? Melora remembered now how wholly unnatural it was for elven architecture to build with steel. At the time, she had shrugged it off as a measure of protection. But if the Verweyans didn't build this door or the other one, then who did? Humans? This "King Albert" myth was no less ridiculous now than it had been when she had first heard it. An ancient mythical civilization, on the other hand, like the one she was searching for... a wry expression would have crept to her face, had she been a human.

Melora also realized they were travelling ever so slightly upwards. It didn't make sense. Any treasure would be buried within the roots of the mountain, not on top of it. But perhaps a stairway would--

Her thoughts were interrupted, for the party of five had just arrived at the doors.

An imposing sight. The wide passage in which the army - or the army illusion - had passed them opened up even further through a wide, roughly hewn stone archway. The hall behind it was so vast that its far ends and the ceiling were lost in the dim glow of the torch. But through the center, there ran rows of magically líghted pillars. Wrought with great skill and power, she realized as she felt again the constant but weak pull of the self-recharging spell.

But the most imposing part of the hall was the grand gateway that lay opposite them. It must be well over twelve fores high, and nine wide. The stainless metal was shimmering oddly in the torchlight.

Just steel? Or... "My word!" with a shout of surprise Melora took off to examine the doors more closely.

Try to isolate the problem before fixing it. Do you have access to a different keyboard or a different computer? Plug the other keyboard in your computer, or your keyboard in the other computer. This way, you can find out if it's the keyboard or the PC that's mucked up.

If the former, check the keyboard for any objects that shouldn't be standing on them, any liquids or unidentifiable gooey substances that shouldn't be inside them, and any scuff marks whose cause you don't know. It's not *likely* that the keyboard has been repeatedly smashed into a wall while you weren't looking, but you shouldn't automatically rule it out. Also, as has been said, check the plug.

If it's a round plug, it should look exactly like this:

I haven't either. But although I'm a Tolkien fan, I'd most likely wouldn't choose computer names from LotR. Rather, say, Myst (though whether to name them after Ages or characters, I'm not sure). Or perhaps Avernum characters, just to make sure nobody knows what the hell it's about. :P

The network in our university names them after elements; the mailserver is "Thorium" for example.

I just got back van de chemist's, and now I have five more nice chemicals, so I could probably start with the holy rituals toworow or some day this week. Until then, may the chicken gods be with you.

I hear Halloween has a New Moon this year. Are you going to inquire from Cthulhu? :P

Also, I like yellow, I like eating fish, and I consistently fool myself into thinking I can write. If you need a favorite computer game along with it, that would be the Myst series.

As for dreams, I didn't have any interesting ones recently. Last night there was one funny scene where I walked down a street and met a policeman who said "Show me your ID please." I started to get out my wallet, but before I'd opened it, he said "Don't try to fool me, we both know it's a fake," and led me away in handcuffs. Whereupon I awoke.

I'm going to bed in a few minutes, and tell you if I get anything worthwhile.

---

Also, Re Dolphin: The fish being described as plastic/alive could be a symbol for self-criticism as well. Checking the fish daily shows doubt or insecurity (or a need to "prove" oneself?). The fish is seen as "inferior" (since it is not alive, but from plastic), while the shopkeeper (an outside person, or the subconscious?) is reassuring. Being late might indicate stress, and the other students liking your fish is probably a form of respect/recognition within a group (or a desire for it).

Little is more fun than utterly unprofessional psychology at 4:00 AM.

mp3>midi in General

As a rule, you can't convert mp3 to midi in any simple/reliable way. I know some of the programs linked to above and they can't do it, and I'm reasonably sure the others can't either. Midi is a format that saves music scores, while mp3 saves the sound itself. Converting mp3 to midi is the equivalent of converting an image to text. There are few tools that can do it, still less that can do it reliably, and probably next to none that are free.

It is possible to convert midi to mp3, however.

What surprises me is that you have found a free converter that can actually convert any length of sound to midi, even fifteen seconds. What is the quality?

Aside from the copyright issues, the way Valorim's geography has been twisted around (and made the hub of the Empire), and Avernum lying in a different universe are probably very problematic concepts - given that the page ranks pretty high, someone is bound to become very confused. :P

Connections is more like a last resort. When nothing else is happening, there is always Connections to keep it together - in this way, Polaris has hibernated through weeks of inactivity.

All in all, the problem of Polaris is less that it has little to offer than that its population is so small that whenever a majority of the members are away (new semester/work starts again) the board gets very quiet very quickly. It's cyclical.
