There are a couple of reasons why something like that could happen. None of them are good. If virus and spyware detection programs don't turn anything up, all I can suggest is doing a clean reinstall of your operating system.

Sounds like a virus or spyware, but viruses for Mac are very rare, and I've never heard of spyware on Mac. If you're on PC, though, that's probably what they are.

If you have the proper software, you might be able to fix it. Otherwise, as Thuryl says, a clean install is probably your best bet.

If you're on Mac and these things are happening to you, then I have no idea what it is, but it's scary.

Again, unless you have the proper software and you can fix it, a clean install is probably your best bet.

If/when you find out what's wrong, let us know, 'kay? I'm curious.

Also if your on PC get a firewall as it could easily be a hacker having a field day. My friend used to do that sort of crap to the rest of my mates because he thought it was hilarious. I suggest a free firewall like Zone Alarm.

Maybe your keyboard is broken? Have you bathed it in coffee or something by accident? I had this "generating of random keys" when my keyboard became wet and had short circuits.

It could be that the pins that plug into the back of the computer are bent also.

It may sound dumb, but make sure that nothing inanimate is pressing keys. By that I mean the monitor, a piece of paper, or some gooey thing that is in the keyboard.

While you're at it, check the mouse pins too. I know it sounds stupid, but I have seen a mouse cause a keyboard to fail because it had bent pins

Try to isolate the problem before fixing it. Do you have access to a different keyboard or a different computer? Plug the other keyboard in your computer, or your keyboard in the other computer. This way, you can find out if it's the keyboard or the PC that's mucked up.

If the former, check the keyboard for any objects that shouldn't be standing on them, any liquids or unidentifiable gooey substances that shouldn't be inside them, and any scuff marks whose cause you don't know. It's not *likely* that the keyboard has been repeatedly smashed into a wall while you weren't looking, but you shouldn't automatically rule it out. Also, as has been said, check the plug.

If it's a round plug, it should look exactly like this:

He's already said that he's tried other keyboards and they had problems too.

Spyware rarely cause the troubles described above. However, trojans do. Having multiple anti-spyware softwares and anti-virus programs is a good bet. Having a firewall is also good but when you got trojans on your computer, it will not help much. There are software firewalls as well as hardware firewalls. Hardware firewalls are more secured but limits your accessability. Software firewalls are less safe but keeps the liberty of your browsing.

Since I am not experienced enough in this problem, I really do not know how you can fix this.

You got three obvious options I advice you to take:
Reformat your computer, leave it to an IT-consult or trash it.

How would the monitor be pressing keys? ~boggles~

Pick up your monitor. Slide your keyboard under it. Set the monitor down. Admittedly, it is very hard not to notice this.

However, some monitors have a very low set frame (a space of just a few centimeters between the desk and the lower rim). If the keyboard just barely fits under this frame, and you are working on a very small desk, the keyboard can slide beneath the screen, possibly pressing a few keys down.

And having to reinstall Windows will verse you well in the art of restarting your computer.

Yesterday I had to finally resolve some MS issues at work. For some reason, or maybe a coincidence, any executable that had a name beginning with the letter A would not work. I finally had to use access, so I did the MS update thing and ended up installing 27Mb of stuff for the OS and 86MB of stuff for Office03. Luckily it only took 30 minutes to do all that, and the software now works again (even the non-MS stuff), but now I'm home, with the same software and OS and a dialup that reaches the blazing speed of 7kbs on a clear calm day. Simply put, I'm nailed.

And Aran, thanks for explaining the monitor thing, you would be amazed how long it takes me to realize that the esc key is jammed down. I would rather walk away from the puter than figure out the problems.

A few months ago at the apple store, I was in line behind a lady whose computer had a most interesting problem: It would not type the letter 'c'. It turned out to be due to a corrupted preference file of all things.
