Energy preservation is similar to magical efficeincy in Avernum 4. You can cast a spell and use less than the amount listed in the spell description. In practice there are better items that you would rather have equiped to help with something else. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Jeff did drop recharge after Exile 1. It was useful for loading wands back in town before going off to adventure. Still Exile 3 and BoE were essentially the same. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Considering the massive topic deletions in Ed's last days, I won't miss a chance to say "In before lock" that many times. If you really want something interesting then try to convince JV to reinstate TM for more than contest judging. At least he could make an interesting post when he wasn't flaming. All 5 classes are immune to terror and a few other effects. They are there to affect creations and the occassional recruit. In Quessa-Uss I found that you can demand the money as compensation for a disturbed sleep and then still get to see Greta. I don't remember if I also tried to intimidate them into telling me their secret. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Some time after I finish up Nethergate: Resurrection and A3 singletons. I going back to finish up a resistance singleton game. It's not a pure case since I do have high dexterity and defense to reduce attacks in the Eastern Gallery. Still it's not that bad except for having to wait until Fort Remote to get your 2 levels from a trainer. Damage reduction works better since it will also affect magical attacks that can't be parried. Shapers make creations to use as boats, which is what you are on at the start of GF1. Since wingbolts are the first true flying creations and are suspect for rogue tendencies, it is too early for Shapers to go airborne. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

It gets better since you get to fight more interesting monsters, gain access to higher level spells, and see more of the valley. You also get to see the Sylak items. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I wouldn't play a MMORPG just because I can't schedule enough time on a regular basis to play. Single player games allow me to play whenever I have free time. Converting these games over to MMORPG would change it so much that it would be better to start over with something new. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Hey add me to the list who like Exile better than Avernum for spells and graphics and both over Geneforge. Nethergate had a great engine it just never became popular, You do have to differentiate between the different versions within each series. Avernum 4 borrowed so much from Geneforge that it shouldn't be classed with the other Avernum games. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

You are too narrow minded in what you consider insane behavior. Obsessive compulsive behavior is quite common among several members who have to post complete lists and analyses of recent games. Synergy has made lists of every major item in Avernum 4 and Geneforge 4. We have the ego maniacal ET working on recruiting a following amongst the weaker minded. Don't forget all the fanatics trying to get into Dikiyoba's latest episode. I see very little signs of sanity. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Just getting Jeff to update those information boxes and help texts would be nice. They are the last thing that he does and he usually just cut and pastes the closest thing he can find in a previous game. I noticed that most players don't even read the instructions anymore since they think they are the same. That's why there was the problem with tool use needing to be on a mage character for Avernum 4. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Since graphics are a major time user in creating, you see a lot of generic guards that are all the same sex. Go download an Exile 1 demo and try talking to the guards in a town. Jeff takes shortcuts with what he considers to be unimportant. You have to understand that these games are based upon the older style games from the 1980s. Plot and atmosphere is more important than graphics and what you see in larger company games where they have more people to handle details. Jeff spends a lot of time trying to satisfy his customer base. Most of the old Geneforge 3 players are now over in Geneforge 4. They still pop in to answer questions, but the major debates have moved to include the new information from that game. Once a new game appears, the older ones have few people discussing them. While the game AI usually attacks the last thing that attacks monsters before their turn. If there are more monsters than attackers, it will go after a neutral (non-attacking) lifecrafter that is hiding behind a corner. I watched this happen to me repeatedly when I had only 2 creations versus 4 monsters. Still an army of creations gets in more attacks per round then a single character and this can make a significant difference. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

You usually cause power spirals to explode by repeated attempts to turn them off. Do this in fight mode so you can run away after you try it. The eastern ones need tool use 14 and the western pair need 17, the highest level in the game. Use items to raise you tool use. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Most of them have quests and quest solutions, but not their rewards. All artifact recipes and in Exile there were descriptions of major items and their powers. Jeff has a totally different perspective on building characters so you are better off with the game walkthroughs. The walkthroughs give specific advice on what levels you need in mechanics and leadership while the hintbooks tend to give general levels like low, medium, and high leadership. The only way that it could really be done is small groups of players (6 or less) could team up online to run together as the party instead of a single player controlling them. Otherwise the place gets over run. You just stand around waiting for an area to repopulate and then it's a race to kill it before another group does, Still Jeff has repeated said he doesn't want to program it and he hates these types of games even though he plays them himself. Look at some of the challenges that have been done and you will see that the only class that has problems is the warrior. This is probably because no one has warped it like Thuryl did with lifecrafter and shocktrooper or Synergy has done with the infiltrator. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

All the hintbooks are paper versions with a decent cover. They cover all the information that you need to finish the game. Best of all they have maps of the general world and key individual areas. The older hintbooks didn't cover everything. They would leave out a few nooks and crannies. However they do have most of what you need. Combine it with the game walkthroughs and you will almost everything. They do leave out easter eggs. The newer ones have the cheat codes for those that really need them.
