Just how much would it rock if the Spiderweb team made an MMORPG? We all seem to be pretty educated people, and with social enthusiasm and the team's creativity, I think something great could be accomplished.

After Spiderweb has finished the new Nethergate game, which of the following would you most like to see?

Geneforge Online
Avernum Online
Nethergate Online
Geneforge 5
Avernum 5
A new single player game

Every poll needs a [] None of the Above option.

That was my choice.

You don't want Spiderweb to make any new games?

This comes up a lot. Spiderweb Software has no plans to make an MMORPG because, basically:

-Jeff doesn't like them all that much.
-He doesn't have the necessary experience to make and support it.
-He needs to stay with what he knows will sell really well or risk going under.

Dikiyoba knows A5 will come after Nethergate: Resurrection, though.

Add to Diki's list:

- Turn based games and mmorpgs don't mix. Unless someone doesn't mind waiting five minutes for his next turn.
- Jeff doesn't have the capital means to make a mmorpg, much less the uncertainty of it selling if he does make it.

Even if Spidweb did make an MMORPG, it would probably be boring. I wouldn't play it anyways, I'm enjoying Spidweb games offline.

They could make a really simple MMORPG not based on any of the games; like this.

Well you're right, it clearly couldn't be turn based. The interface would have to be much different.

However, I can picture stalking through the woods of Terrestia with two glahks (on autopilot of course), when suddenly a guardian runs up and kills you.

Actually, a geneforge style MMORPG would be much more interesting than an avernum one. You could choose at the beginning to join either the shapers or the rebels as a player and get involved in trying to destroy the different sides.

Possibly, but Geneforge doesn't have Rentar.

Which is an infinite improvement.

The problem would be combat, which is turn-based. As an almost all-encompassing rule, turn-based MMORPGs suck.

I wouldn't play a MMORPG just because I can't schedule enough time on a regular basis to play. Single player games allow me to play whenever I have free time. Converting these games over to MMORPG would change it so much that it would be better to start over with something new.

I already have enough games right now.
Also, you can't make a multiplayer out of Avernum/Geneforge/Nethergate.

You know, if Jeff made a new series, that would get basically every Spiderweber in buying it.

As we've concluded a million or so times before, a GF MMORPG would be possible, and it might even be remotely good. Avernum and Nethergate really couldn't work at all, unless you completely Geneforgize Avernum, which would be a sin greater than A4.

However, the discussion should remain all in theory, because there's utterly no chance of Jeff doing any of this.

There is no reason you couldn't make a partially turn based multiplayer like a baldur's gate LAN game, with up to 3-5 players. It would not be a MMORPG but could be very interesting. This would be far more manageable than a MMORPG. It could be kind of fun. Four players would work, the same size as an avernum party.

How difficult do you suppose it would be to convert Avernum's turn-based engine into a slightly more real-time engine like Neverwinter Nights', where cooldown times take the place of turns? I always figured that, after seeing the nonturn-based non-combat in Geneforge, that that was the direction Jeff was heading in anyway.

I actually don't think there's ever been a turn-based MMORPG. Turn-based "ORPGs", on the other hand, have been more successful, but they tend to be more strategy-oriented, like multiplayer Civ, Risk, or other such games.

I don't think that (insert insult here) would join these forums.

Also, my post was meant that that was what was in the games.

Edit -I will reword it -Avernum/Geneforge are both strategic games. Especialy when you fight stuff in these games.

Sounds like World of Warcraft.

I would have also said none of the above.

I actually don't think President Bush has ever (yet) mispronounced "strategy"; it was Will Ferrell impersonating George Bush who pronounced it "strategery."

There is actually a "None of the above" option in this poll: "An entirely new single player game."

That's the option I've voted for. I think Jeff has sufficiently milked the existing series and it's time for something new.

Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword,
For it too has the power to kill.
However well placed word, unlike a well placed sword,
Can also have the power to heal.
