Along those lines, that comment would come across as less hostile if it had "us" instead of "you" or just dropped the "of you" entirely. I mean, "as much as many of us" and "as much as many" carry the same meaning, but they seem less pointed. It's worth noting that the Internet, which lacks many of the basic forms of non-verbal communication that render casual conversation comprehensible, has a tendency to make things sound snarky that weren't intended as snarky. If there's any possibility of a comment sounding snarky that I didn't mean to sound snarky, I add a :P just to clarify that I don't mean to be snarky. It has served me well since I began it. If there's a comment that I actually want to sound snarky, then I usually leave the computer and don't post it until I come back. If I still feel like being snarky, then my snarkiness is probably justified and I just post it. And yeah, this poll's age ranges could use some tweaking (like, having many more of them). -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Eh, while the Islamic rulers of the Middle East in the Middle Ages were relatively tolerant — perhaps — they were no more peaceful than anybody else, really. Civil war was not uncommon. Oppression of minorities occurred (even if it was technically forbidden by Islamic law). Even a cursory glance at the relevant Wikipedia article shows that, much less any kind of genuinely scholarly investigation. Being the most tolerant religion in existence in the Middle Ages did not require much. It is definitely true that the Middle East has been the site of great wars since time immemorial, well before Jesus of Nazareth. The Romans and the Persians, the Greeks and the Persians, and the Achaeans and the Trojans, just to cite the major rivalries from classical history. Scholars of Mesopotamia could take the "massive, world-ending war" theme back several thousand years more. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. On the subject of newbie/oldbie-ness: part of the problem is that there have been waves of joining. Basically every two years or so the community recycles itself with a new wave of departures and arrivals. We're just now beginning a new wave, I think. Anyway, people who have been around for a couple more waves than other people seem oldbie-ish to them. I seem like an oldbie in comparison to, say, Tullegolar, because I arrived (I'd say) two waves before he did. Thuryl makes me look like a newbie, though. When was the last time that: You showered? This afternoon. You lost your cell phone? Where? I don't think I ever have. I destroyed one in a washing machine once, though, long ago. You lost your keys? Locked them somewhere? I really can't remember. Loooong ago. You cut your hair? June or July, I think. You overslept? Mildly — Thursday. I had some work that I needed to do, but was too lazy to get up. Seriously? I can't recall. Current: Mode of transportation? Car, too frequently. Book you are reading? Gradually working my way back through LotR. I'm at Two Towers right now. Model of cell phone? Uh... Cingular... something.... Jewlery you are wearing? The only accessory at all is a plain watch. Game you are playing? I'm between games right now. Fav: Cartoon? you can include cartoons that you used to like South Park. Family Guy. (When I was little, Gargoyles.) Baseball team? Giants, of course! Location? Heh. SW oldbie Thuryl, of course. SW newbie? I'll give you three guesses. And the first two don't count. Have you ever? Stalked someone? Define "stalked." Been in love? Yeah. Missed TM? Oddly enough, yeah. Gotten lost? Duh... Thrown a pie at someone? No. Random First quote that pops into your head? "Better to reign in hell...." Perhaps my favorite quote. Name a red object in your room My TPR shirt. Name a song that makes you sad "Last Kiss," Pearl Jam. If you could remove a person from history, who would it be? Not sure. One of the post-Hitler genocide-committers. Hitler himself, as atrocious as he was, was useful to show how utterly horrible genocide is. After him, all the other ones have been entirely without use. If you could call someone a 'best friend', who would that be? Heh. New version up. Still only small changes. Apologies to testers who sent in reports nearly three weeks ago to whom I just now replied. The alternative to dropping the bomb — continuing island hopping — was not exactly going to be a picnic. Read up on Iwo Jima. I shudder to think what would've happened if American forces had to do the same thing on Honshu as they did on Iwo Jima. It's worth bearing in mind, too, that the Japanese were a generation or two removed from the most intense medieval honor society ever to exist. Surrender was far, far worse than death. Back on topic, Rentar? A good villain? In BoA?! Rentar was not the greatest character to begin with, and her only appearance has been in UV! -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. About a month from now, around the end of November. Purely by coincidence, of course. :P I mean, it's already "out" in the sense that people can play it all they want, and it's not going to look enormously different when it's officially released. It's "not out" in the sense that I'm still going to re-work several things before I call it "done," and I don't want it on CSR yet. It would be done already had work not mounted up with such a fury over the past couple months. I should get some free time in the not-too-distant future to work on it again. It mentions A4, which reminds me of something. I'm surprised that Jeff has never attributed the commercial success of A4 to the most obvious thing: the popularity of the previous Exile/Avernum games. It was the first all-new game in a very popular series in several years. Simply making an "Avernum 4" guaranteed that it would sell well, and it still would have even if it were just a port of Kill Ogre, Win Prize to the Geneforge engine. Still, on a more relevant topic, I'm definitely going to play GF4's demo, and there's a good chance that I'll actually get the full version and finish the game, which I didn't do with GF3. I like all of the things that he's saying about GF4. New AP system? -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. TM's BoE links and my BoA links should cover Blades. As far as "fan sites," you might throw in Desp and Polaris, even though the latter is now only tangentially related to Spiderweb and the former even less (or so I am told — I haven't been to either in months or years). Spidweb's own links page probably has a few SW game sites that aren't otherwise covered. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
