Hm... not really something to be proud of.

Well, you see... it was revived by someone who had an actual question. Granted, some people failed to pick up on this and started the topic back up again... but it seems to have the elements of a discussion again. But yes, you're right.

Bad newbies. Bad. :P

Bet I had just as much, if not more fun than you did.

Gah! I thought this was a new topic until I read one of my own posts. :P

Ah, but I bet you spent less time having just as much fun as me. Thus, I come out ahead by spending more time with said fun, assuming a fairly constant rate of fun per time unit when compared between our playing styles.

As your sig says, "You Lose." :P

Dikiyoba had the opposite problem, actually. Dikiyoba realized it was an old topic and that Dikiyoba had posted in it, but Dikiyoba couldn't find Dikiyoba's post.

Thanks.
Before I forget : I'm french, give me a break :D
A good willing french newbie to whom the word "singleton" wouldn't have been a fisrt choice as an entry in the search engine (even though as I browse through the previous posts right now I see Randomizer used the term).

As Rent-an-Ihrno said, I find it difficult to care for a party of four. Plus I'd rather have one weak character going stronger and stronger (again, à la Elder scrolls) than four characters that constantly have to rely on each other.
However I've played Avernum some time ago with four characters and I had troubles staying alive while encountering foes so I had to ask for strong tips if I was to play with only one guy (one girl actually).

Bah, don't apologise, the search function is pretty useless at the best of times. Not only that, but since a certain recent piece of sabotage, searches have become even less reliable.

Also, you do get a certain amount of credit for being French. In fact the genius combination of croissant and coffee for breakfast gives you a LOT of credit in my book. Mmm, croissants.

Completely understandable. I actually didn't know the term when I first started playing, either.

Yay for people who post more than once!

The rule, which you, in your infinite wisdom, have not grasped, is the following (and it bears repeating every now and then): it is generally considered bad manners to revive a topic without anything genuinely new and useful to add or ask.

This person did in fact have something genuinely new and useful to ask (sort of), so this topic revival was fine. Woe betide those who virtually never have anything useful to say, though (and you know who you are).

I never lose! Contemplate this: while you were still playing Avernum, I cheated, got done early, and moved on to other, equally fun games. So really, we may have had the same amount of fun, but I had the more well rounded gaming experience. Thus, I come out on top, I am the Emperor.

That's assuming equal fun per time. I'll accept that assumption since it's too subjective to argue, but then there's another problem. You're getting less time per game, so you're actually paying more per unit of fun.

—Alorael, who gets more fun per time, more time per game, and more game per fun.

Actually I shy away from butter-based bakery. Makes me fart so bad.

I got my ass whooped yesterday by 5 or 7 bandits and 2 giant lizards while heading north from fort duvno so a party of four sounds more and more appealing to me.

Just a question, that is slightly related, has any one ever made a singleton with only luck (not counting the skills you get for free [herb finding] or the ones you can buy [BMaster, Anatomy etc.])?

This would be much more fun in Exile, where high luck can make you practically invincible. It'd be fairly easy to start a PC out with 5 luck (giving him a better than even chance of escaping death) and still have him be reasonably effective in combat.

Oh God. Luck.
I remember one time in Exile III, I was playing a singleton with maxed out luck. Then I drank a potion of paralysis. I waited almost 20 minuets before my character finally died. I was using a very old Mac at the time so Ctrl Alt Del wasen't an option.
Oh, the agony. :(

There has always been apple-option-escape. Sure, it had a better than even chance of causing calamitous freezing, but it was an option.

—Alorael, who wishes BoE monsters had Luck. Nothing says fun encounters like Doomguards that don't die.
