Scripting Problems in Blades of Avernum Editor

For the first, see Spiderweb's bugs page, particularly under "Some Words About Error Line Numbers," which is itself slightly misleading. BoA counts line numbers the way that BBEdit (for Mac) and Crimson Editor (for Windows) do, although the actual count can be buggy.

For the second, post a script and we can tell you what's wrong with it.

Shipwrecked? Wasn't that the name of a BoA scenario that never got released? I am lost.

As far as real scenario designing advice, look in the Lyceum's Designer's Forum and Spiderweb's Scenario Workshop's Editor Articles. Specifically, this was Creator's article.

Just so people know, a person normally has to release at least one scenario for his advice to be taken seriously.

"Supposed to be" because I'd heard that somewhere from someone, and that was the only thing that I'd heard. I have no actual basis for that or any memory of where it came from.

I've never even looked at the scenario, so for all I know, it could be fabulous.

The library? You walk through the doors.

There are some doors (that lead to a stairway to nowhere) that can't be opened, though.

How have you set the memory cells in the door? List the numbers.

In other news, is Erik Westra's site down? I can't access it.

So when you try to unlock the door that this key opens, it actually unlocks, even though the item doesn't show up on the special items screen?

Er, what they are are games with multiple elements. One such element is dialogue. They do have text, and "enjoying them for what they are" would have to include enjoying the text. You're enjoying them for the parts that you like, which is just as valid but not quite the same thing.

Also, your point about "intellectuals" is kind of silly. Going around and hacking things up is not exactly an intellectual endeavor. Even if you're an intellectual and you like killing computer monsters, that's fine: intellectuals do non-intellectual things all the time (everyone needs some way to relax). However, pretending that pure hack n' slash is all about smarts, really, is kind of odd.

That's not to say that combat can't involve lots of thinking, though. Beating puzzle combat — what you'd find in the so-called "modern" Blades scenarios — is very much an intellectual activity. Just not your basic "clear out this dungeon full of goblins" combat, which is fun, too, of course, but it's not exactly an intellectual challenge.

EDIT: By the way, Thuryl, if you're going for "The Worst Man," you probably need a definite article and the adjective in attributive position: Ho Kakistos Anthropos. Right now you are "Worst Man," or possibly "A Worst Man."

It is notable that Jeff actually changed the set of alternatives as GF went on. The rebels in GF3 are considerably less palatable (more bloodthirsty) than the Awakened of GF1. I suspect the reason for this change is that Jeff himself found the choice too easy in GF1 and wanted to complicate it.

It's probably not a good idea to host Exodus until it's officially released. I want people to see the page that it's on before they download it, at least right now.

Well, it's Kass's whims, not Legare's, but I guess that point hasn't been made in the scenario at the distance that you are.

You say that you can't figure out a way to leave Manikoss alive and whole? I'm not sure where you're having trouble. You go into the underground area, retrieve the two items you need, go back the way you came, and then walk out the east gate. None of that has to do with a boat...

I've posted long, rambling tracts on what I did and didn't like about each of my scenarios on the Lyceum's boards. Here are the highlights of the negatives (or the lowlights, I guess):

Bahssikava: the combat was varied for me, but not for the player. Each fight has a slight designing gimmick, but it doesn't affect the player's strategy enough. I would more dramatically modify how the player has to fight each combat, and I'd probably make the enemies of more varied species. I'd also tie it all together more: Galthrax sort of came out of nowhere.

Lord Putidus: I'm not sure. I tend to disagree with most of the criticisms of the scenario. Maybe I can agree that it was too short — it probably would've benefited from being about two or three times as long. More exploration of the virtues that the scenario was mostly concerned with would've been nice. I guess I also could've made the floor paths more obvious in the castle, but at the time, I wasn't sure how to do that.
