Areni is better than NK0:P in every way. The reason some (one, to be exact) of the judges disagreed was she found Areni to be too difficult. This is a person who has said that she hardly plays BoE.

Well, I suppose you could argue that NK0:P is a better BoE scenario for people who can't play BoE. I might concede that.

Anyway, if you want every post and statement to be choked with disclaimers, here's the rewording you asked for:

I find it suprising that so many people (speaking in terms of percentage rather than absolute numbers) have expressed a disliking of the Geneforge interface, as it appears to me to be the best-designed interface of any game designed by Spiderweb Software Incorporated (despite the fact that I personally prefer the Exile interface), and I would have expected it to be the most popular as a result. While I realise that these two things are not necessarily mutually exclusive, it does seem likely from the available data that my presuppositions were incorrect, thus my suprise.

Happy now?

See how the new formulation implies that you're open to re-evaluating your preconceptions in a way that the original formulation didn't? (The fact that you personally prefer the Exile interface to the Geneforge interface despite thinking the Geneforge interface is objectively better is interesting new information as well, actually.)

Why? Didn't it do that in GF?

If the magic system is "vasty" improved, would there be a good mix of the current Avernum spells and new spells, or just a completely new format of spells?

Or is it just the same Avernum spells with new sounds and animations to them?

Edit: Extra statement

I'm sure Jeff has pulled of something great with A4. Just wait. Like Drakey said screenshots don't tell the whole story. BTW I'm a bit rusty at posting so this is a response to the first page. But it still fits.

I would change the interface, so that it won't ressemble too much Geneforge. (Which has an awful interface, that gives an unprofessional look).

Hello everyone who cares; I'm back on the boards.

At any rate, I wanted to see if a topic variant takes, here... And I do realize that this is all speculation.

I was wondering about everyone's thoughts on this revelation that powerful magical creatures (of whatever nature) are actually *in* Avernite cities. This seems to me like it might make for some interesting combat early on, something like the warzone-plot some people predicted (very, very early on) for GF3.

Sidenote, which people mentioned before: What do you think they might be? I think the initial synopsis gives a very ominous overtone to everything... Whatever these creatures are, they can't be touched. They just go around killing people? They could be monster plagues, but they could be sentient. I'm holding out for a demon invasion, but who knows?

Just trying to get people to comment on the part that I'm really interested in, which is the likely nature of gameplay, and yes, even at this early stage, about part of the story.

P.S. Drakefyre curiously vague about the potential of that mysterious race from the Isle of Bigail...

Does this whole Geneforge-engine thing mean that it'll have the same moving-around concept as Geneforge, where you click on a space and walk there? That annoyed me so much when I tried Geneforge out, because you have to change the range of the map yourself instead of the game automatically scrolling as you move like it does in Avernum.

If it's turn-based, then I don't see how it is feasible to have a point and click way of moving characters. Probably rather like in Avernum: Hold the mouse to move many steps in a certain direction.

And unless Jeff is feeling cruel, scrolling the map separately from the characters makes no sense.

There is point and click. Keyboard movement may be in the works, maybe not.

Keyboard movement is a must, or else I'm not even going to bother playing it. Mouse movement was okay for real-time GF, but not turn-based Avernum.

I agree with Kel.

It's amazing you even considered removing keyboard/numpad movement. I mean ffs, it works on hexes, in a 3x3 alignment, if that doesnt scream "numpad" what does?

Please, for the love of god, keyboard movement

Gah! Mouse-click-moving! >< What are the advantages of mouseclicking over keypad-moving or one-space-at-a-time/more-if-you-hold-down-the-mouse-moving, anyway?

You can move really quickly over large amounts of terrain, which will be a must with this new engine.

Like in E3 from memory, where you could hold the mouse down, and you would move (rather quickly) in whichever direction the mouse faced?

Good, but compared to using the keyboard, bad.

I hate these demand sessions, but I have to agree that movement by mouse isn't my favorite and Geneforge movement in particular seemed inelegant. On the other hand, I'll keep an open mind. Baldur's Gate, Fallout, and Neverwinter Nights all survive just fine with mouse movement. So do RTS games. Maybe A4 will follow suit.

—Alorael, who would still rather have mouse movement if at all possible. It just isn't Avernum without it.
