Actually, your alchemy skill can be lower still. You only need to know alchemy at level 6, but I recommend higher, just to ensure success.

That's okay, I was just more curious than anything else. Thanks anyway, though.

You know, that sounds rather interesting, despite being pointless. If you don't mind, I'd like to see that.

Avernum 1 Singleton in The Avernum Trilogy

I have not tried a singleton in A1, but I would think that Natural Mage and Elite Warrior would be a possible combination although the XP-penalty of 55% means you will not advance very quickly.

I forgot about being able to buy Cave Lore and Archery. Thanks for the reminder.

When I play A1 as a singleton, I do Fast on Feet and Natural Mage. It's got a fairly high XP penalty too (I think 45%), but I've found it to be a fairly formidable combo, at least in the beginning.

Elite Warrior and Natural Mage sounds reasonable and most appealing at this point. I tend to like wearing heavy armor, and if I am going to be a Mage, I might as well.

Random (or anyone)...will you give me a bit more on how much you allocated in other skills like:

Melee weapons. Seems like a few cheap levels are worthwhile. I couldn't hit much at the beginning when I didn't invest in it at all.

Hardiness: worth investing ANY points in?

Defense: better than Hardiness, apparently...how much to invest? All it does is help you avoid melee blows.

Dexterity: does it make much difference for a singleton? (going sooner in combat or hitting/dodging more often?) Or is it too expensive to get up to useful levels?

Assassination

Bows

I've never tried Elite Warrior and Natural Mage as a singleton, but it actually sounds pretty good. And if you want a tank that can cast mage spells, Natural Mage is an absolute must.

Melee weapons: I really don't bother, as my Strength & Dexterity usually take care of it, and I don't do much melee (I'm more of a spellcaster).

Hardiness: Base level is fine early on, but a couple of levels overall can't hurt.

Defense: Same as Hardiness.

Dexterity: You'll need it, and it does make a difference. I'm usually around level 8 with characters that have Fast on Feet.

Assassination: If you're planning any hand-to-hand combat, and I'm assuming so with Elite Warrior, then get some, though you probably won't need more than about 5 levels.

Bows: You're on your own here, as I'm not that big on missile weapons.

Also, one final thing: Drink all the Knowledge Brew you can find; you'll need it.

My singletons--indeed, all my PCs--tend to be high priest/archmage tanks. Therefore, my Intelligence ends up around 12+, with both Spells skills at 18.

and btw: what if I have sold the graymold salve?

First, the only stupid thing would've been not to ask the question. I know this from experience.

Second, I've been playing each game in the Avernum series on and off since they were first released, though I only own the first two.

Third, if you sell your graymold salve, you can always buy, find, and/or make more of it.

Although in general I prefer Avernum over Exile, I forgot to mention two ways I prefer Exile over Avernum. First, it's a lot easier to buy knowledge brew early on, allowing you to pump up your PCs fairly easily. Second, (spoiler) if you have a high alchemy skill, you can use it to make a huge fortune in Lorelei.

Correction: The front gates are harder to get through. The easiest way I've found to get to the castle is through Kantre's Realm, thanks to high leadership skill, an entry baton, and a couple of ur-glaahks.

And to answer the question in the topic title: I still play G1 every so often, but not as much as I used to.

Edit: corrected a typo.

I don't remember it, and I played nothing but E3 and BoE for about a solid year. All I remember about avoiding combat is a message that said: "Combat: Monsters fled!"

The terrain's a bit more realistic.
There's more dialogue, and a better dialogue system in general.
More quests.
You can get special skills and abilities, in addition to the basic set.
You have a reputation, which can influence events.
If you have a high enough Cave Lore/Nature Lore skill, you can avoid some potentially nasty fights.

Exile's spell system is better, though, since there's a much wider variety, and your combat spells can target open spaces (warning: and your PCs too) and not just monsters. Bring back Shockwave!

That's why I like all the junk shops in the Exile trilogy (especially E3), as well as in BoE. (minor spoiler) In E3, I'd go to the junk shop in Storm Port with a ton of cash, and reset until I had a suit of Mithral chain mail for all my PCs. :D

The junk shops in the Avernum series aren't nearly as good as in E3.

I always check in with Anaximander first, though, just to be safe (and to keep the bureaucrats happy), and also because I've usually done a lot of other stuff that needs reporting. Plus, I get my allowance, too.

First you show the rune to Berra, then you go to Anaximander's office. Anaximander will tell you to speak with Erika. Now you can go across the bridge.

It's the same for both E3 and A3.

In the other GF games, I find that having a silver tongue really helps you through some tough conversations. I always buy a about 12-15 levels myself. However, I don't fully know how much I need in G2 thru G4, because I only have the demos (I know, shame on me, though I do have G1), and usually don't buy more than what I need for the demo portion.

Only one point? Sheesh. That, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, constitutes a major rip-off. The reward easily should've been at least two points, maybe three.

And do you want creepy? I'll give you creepy. In my head, there's a complete map of E1-E3 (and consequently A1-A3), G1, and the 3 scenarios that come with BoE, plus the demo areas of Nethergate, G2, and (parts of) G3. There's even some SubTerra levels that I could probably play blindfolded. I haven't played too much of A4 or G4 yet, so please, no hints.

I, too, have a solution: When you buy the games, get them on CD. That way, you'll always have a backup copy on hand.

But if Micawber's right and you only lost your save games, get yourself an undelete utility; there are quite a few good ones, even those that are freeware. (This might even work if you actually meant the whole games.) A word of caution, though: the recovered files might be corrupted.
