I hereby interrupt all the bickering in this thread to mention that I've just had a frightening revelation: I'll be able to run for U.S. President in 2012. A scary thought indeed.

Maybe. It can still make for an inreresting discussion, though.

Not even yourself? We all exert political influence; some just do it in a larger sphere.

I'm talking about those who take an active role in politics, especially those who make a career of it.

Tell me about it. Political apathy seems to run ramapnt here. If I remember correctly, I once read an article about an election where the voter turnout was 10% or less. Highly ironic, if you ask me. At least I vote regularly, so my voice is heard.

I tend to favor spells quite highly, with a melee/missile weapon as a backup. I also prefer to play solo, but am not above using creations when necessary.

Obviously good advice, though I've been doing that type of thing since I bought the Exile trilogy back in 2000 or so. Also, as I've said in previous threads, I buy the registered versions on CD, just in case I misplace the dozen or so copies I make of the file.

Not surprising. I have yet to meet a recruiter for any organization who can't think beyond the script that he or she uses.

We don't have any one "independent" party per se, but there are other parties besides just Republicans and Democrats; those two just happen to be the oldest and most powerful. The only other parties I can name offhand are the Green party and the Libertarian party, though there are others. There's even a Communist party, but I don't recall what they actually call themselves. And I have absolutely no clue as to what parties could be considered left or right wing.

EDIT: Out of all the people I've mentioned my love of liverwurst to, you're the first one who didn't tell me that it's disgusting.

For the most part, I don't mind playing female characters as long as they aren't *too* obviously feminine. After all, to your computer, your character is nothing more than a series of numbers and scipts, no matter how you may personally feel about it.

in avernum 1 you can only be human?
seems strange to me but i cant change race
That's right, in A1, like E1, it's basically humans vs. everybody else.
quote:
natural mage and what else are good for a caster?
Natural Mage helps mages (obviously), and Divinely Touched helps priests. Good Education is useful when deciphering magical scripts to learn spells, but that's about it. I think Strong Will might help to resist dumbfounding, but I'm not entirely certain.
quote:
if i get that speed one will the extra speed pointlet me 2x per round?
Fast on Feet gives you a chance of getting 1 extra AP each round, and helps you move sooner in combat.
quote:
does it make sense to make 1 pure mage and 1 pure priest?

or will you have lots of extra skill points later on so or it would make more sense to make them both mage/priest because theres a point where extra into mage/priest spells doesnt add much for spells?
I've never made pure priests or pure mages; I just make them combination priests/mages, due to the large overlap of the two. Both the priest's and mage's most powerful spells require a minimum skill level of 18, so I suggest that as the cap for each of these skills.
quote:
if i have a character 10% exp penalty and the other 90% what will the differences between them be by the end?
Not much, if anything, since your level maxes out at 40. The only difference is that one character will gain levels faster. And the maximum xp penalty (or bonus, if you use disadvantages instead) is 70%, since you're only allowed 2 traits.
quote:
am i hurting the character with that big penalty or wil lthe extra exp for kills make up for it?
Are you hurting the character? No, it'll just gain levels at a slower rate. If I recall correctly, the Avernum series doesn't give extra xp to a character for kills.

but besides, luck is more useful in this context, especially regarding the lower skill cost. i just think intelligence is a nice addition as you don't depend on your luck so much.

I checked in A1-A3, and found "Willpower" listed under "Useful Skills"; it's supposed to give a 5% per level chance to resist mental attacks, and has a base value of:
Intelligence
+ Mage Spells/2
+ Priest Spells/2
+ Luck

By the time I face my first mung demon, I like to have the following stats:
8-10 Intelligence
10-15 Mage Spells
10-15 Priest Spells
2-5 Luck

According to the above formula, I should have a minimum 100% resistance to mental attacks. However, I still get a massive dose of dumbfounding.
