About "Luck" in Geneforge Series

Nioca and Randomizer have pretty much summed up what luck does, so I won't add anything else there.

However, I will say that getting a few levels of luck is definitely worth the investment, if only for the potential to save your life. I never like to do too much until my luck is at least 5, but that's just my opinion.

I'd like that too, since my monitor has a wide screen, and everything tends to look a little funky when stretched out. That's not only true of the GF series, but A4 and BoA as well.

Been there, done that. It took me about a year to figure out what I was doing. And as for finding your way around, here's a map (or, more accurately, a series of maps).

Randomizer already listed the game-winning quests, so I won't repeat the list. After training up a bit, I recommend you go after Grah-Hoth first, since it's probably the easiest of the three, and fairly straightforward.

Ah, those were the days... (takes a moment to zone out and wax nostalgic) In the Exile games, I'd always make sure to get some luck (usually around 5 levels), just so I'd have a bit of insurance for my PCs. Then towards the endgame, I'd try to bump it up to 20; when I had it maxed out, my PCs would rarely, if ever, die.

For the record, luck can save your life in Avernum (at least in A1 & A2); it just needs to be a bit higher.

Piercing crystals work against doors? I never knew that, and I've had the game for years. (minor spoiler: For the record, I did know that Dispel Barrier worked on doors.)

Avernum joinable NPC's in The Avernum Trilogy

Yes, you can make a pretty good party from the jonable NPCs; I've done this myself a few times in the full version. As for the number of said NPCs, I think Kelandon's right, but I'm too lazy to check.

Personally, I'd rather just make my own set of custom PCs and be done with it; there's a lot more you can do that way than with the joinables.

I forgot all about buying luck. I normally don't bother to go above about 12-15 levels of luck anyway; I don't want things to go too well for my character.

Does time matter in any Geneforge game? in Geneforge Series

As far as I can tell, time is totally meaningless in all the Geneforge games. I find this to be a good thing, since nobody can get mad at you for being too late. Besides, I like to do just about everything that can be done before finishing the game.

So that's where it is. I normally don't bother to get it, because I prefer to get 6 sets of mithral chain mail.

In the meantime, I thought of another challenge: Find the mandrake shop! (At least I think it's in the demo.) I won't say where it is, that would be telling...*grins evilly*

Actually, you hear about it in the Gale library, but if memory serves, you can still get it in the unregistered version. Don't ask me where it is, though, because I've bothered to get it only once or twice in the past four or five years.

Near Loreli? You can go that far?
Almost. You can't get to the automap section that has Lorelei on it, but you can get to the one just east of it. I used to go over that way just to kill a bunch of giants to get experience, and to kill time waiting for the Tower of Magi disaster.

What challenges are there for an Unregistered Version of E2/E3?
I never had the unregistered version of E2, but here's a few challenges for E3:

Before I got the registered version, one thing I used to do was wait around for the Tower of Magi disaster, and tackle the demons there.

On the Isle of Bigail, there's a crypt with a powerful undead creature (for new parties anyway) at the center. Also on the island, you could go after an item called Patchar's Plate.

I'm not sure anymore, but I think you could even get the recipe for Knowledge Brew in the unregistered version.

If you wait around long enough, you can get the Orb of Thralni. When you do, fly out to some of the little islands scattered everywhere.

You can't enter Sharimik or Lorelei in the unregistered versions, nor can you do much--if anything--with the Troglos or Giants; but once you have the Orb of Thralni, you can fly over certain mountain ranges and attack some giant encampments near Lorelei.
quote:
Done some of the minor quests, but still got to get round to killing those Slith in the Mines (haven't been bothered yet... I'm not actually sure if they're there due to not checking.)
I'm assuming you're talking about the mine just outside of Gloddale. If memory serves, you can tackle the Sliths there. Spoiler: I recommend going in through the eastern entrance, it's a lot easier and avoids a bunch of traps.

More proof: Don't believe everything you read. :)

Personally, I don't bother trying to learn anywhere near that level of detail about a game; it takes most of the fun out of it for me.

Been there, done that. But I can take it a step further: I had absolutely no cash at the time, and had to steal to raise the necessary funds. Then my best priest, now freed from dumbfounding, healed the rest.

Or alternately, I've found that Bless Party works just as well if you don't have Major Blessing. Also, I'd like to remind you that additional blessing spells multiply the blessing effect, making it quite powerful.

Plus, you should see the nasty combination of bless, haste, and protection; it produces a truly devastating effect without scratching your PCs.

Archer? What's that? ;)

Being a pure mage/priest guy myself, I can appreciate how tough that particular dungeon can be--all thanks to the mung demons. Now excuse me while I take a large swig from my jug of Potion of Clarity, and head back into the fray.

I kill Doomguards in one of two ways:

1) Bless & haste my party, then hack them to pieces, occasionally throwing a Wound spell at them for good measure (they're not immune--or even resistant--to this spell).

2) Have everyone in the party use the Protection spell (or Sheilding Crystals), and cast Shockwave for several rounds. It's very draining on your spell points this way, but the Doomguards don't stand a chance.
