As far as challenge goes, I prefer E1 over A1, despite the former being raelly crude. I've beaten A1--quite easily, I might add--on the highest difficulty setting with PCs with the "Cursed at Birth" and "Completely Inept" traits.

And maybe the next Avernum game will continue the Bahssikava storyline.

I just thought of something. (WARNING: Mystic's using his brain again! :D )

Since the GF games are scripted, why not rewrite one or two zone dialogue scripts to include a talking ornk? People have rewritten some scripts to make trainers, so this should be possible--at least in theory.

Don't forget to make sure you have enough skill points either (which, of course, goes without saying).

I don't bother with First Aid. Since all 4 of my PCs can cast healing, curing, mass healing, and mass curing, I don't really need it.

It's a good thing I don't have A3 yet then. The E3 Golem Factory is bad enough with its moving floors everywhere.

As far as I've seen, there's no "Forgotten" zone anywhere in G1--and I've been in just about every nook & cranny in the game.

It's a good thing I get all 5 then. Just out of curiosity, what happens if you don't get all 5?

Here's another way to get stuck: not thoroughly exploring an area before giving up. This happened the first time I explored the Abyss, and I thought I could get back through Fort Spire without checking in first. After restarting from the beginning, I searched the area again, and found several other places to exit the Abyss.

For the custom levels, my count (which was really more of a guesstimate) included all the contest packs, plus the "Zozo & Isi" pack, plus all the levels on the caravelnet forum that aren't included in a pack. I don't think I counted any level more than once.

And as far as I can tell, only the Prime set has hidden levels, one in each row. Also in that set, each level in the top row has a hidden area containing the hard mode exit.

I'd say it's easily more than that, maybe even double your estimate. Stew Boy alone probably has close to 70 or 80 in total.

I know I've made about 25 levels myself, with at least another five or so in the works, with the ultimate goal of creating the first levelset made by a single player.

Actually, in E1, it's a regular item, but it can't be sold. And in Avernum (at least in A1), you can sell it, for a small fortune.

The Orb of Thralni is the only item I know of in E1 that you can drop to make the game unwinnable.

True, but it is an ancestor of the modern-day Mac, since that's what it eventually evolved into.

Really only when it comes to backwards compatibility, and it has more of that than OS X. :P

I'll have to take your word about anything concerning OS X, my last Mac computer was an Apple IIe (remember those?).

And here's a little fun fact with Vista's backwards compatibility: I have a very, very, very old RPG for Windows 3.1 that, amazingly, runs perfectly in Vista with no issues whatsoever.

I do that in every game I play. As much as I've been known to hoard things, I'm also good at grabbing dropped items (as well as anything else not nailed down), and spending the cash from them just as quickly. You'd be amazed at how fast you can spend a million or two in an Exile, Avernum, or Geneforge game.

I have Vista, and know what you mean. Just play the game in compatibility mode; the same is true for the editor, if you want to use it. I suggest you do the same thing with E2 & E3, just in case.

I agree: If someone offers to teach you skills for cash, take it. Why spend the skill points when you don't have to? :D

I wouldn't be surprised if, when combined with certain character traits, invulnerability becomes inevitible in melee. I still take a beating against strong spellcasters, though (like wizards and high priests).
