Do you like changes in Avernum or not in Avernum 4 | |

Actually the changes from A3 to A4 are more than the changes from A3 to A5. A5 has the return to the older elevated terrain, being able to use boats, targeting individual monster from the keyboard, and other features that were lost in the rush to get A4 out there. I wanted another choice for the last question. Since I've seen A5, I know that the massive changes are mostly to restore lost features. The only major new feature is battle disciplines that greatly improves the game for fighters. No more just melee or missle attack. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

These were answered a few months back, but I think before the last General purge. Use search over in the archives for "fluffy turtles" to get most of them. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Nephil elite warrior divine touch for A4 and A5 is better as a fighter since you get increased blademaster and pick up sharpshooter. Fast on feet isn't as helpful since those extra AP can't be relied on to help when needed. Increased health through tough constitution is useful later in the game. You can delete a topic as the creator if you do it before anyone replies. The body is northeast of the Faerie Bazaar near the Jagged Aerie. Check out the skeletal bodies outdoors until you find the right one. The quest from Velanna implies that the body is further south than it actually is. Wait until you play A5 and the difference becomes glaringly obvious about halfway through the game. Seriously, A3 was the last game where playing a human was better on all difficulty levels and that's only if you weren't out to get extra encounters with Empire troops. A4 was better to be a nephil on torment difficulty. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Traits and skills summation reposted is the best that I've seen on the subject. There might be an earlier one. There is also one for quick strike and magical efficiency here. Some of the effects are only a chance of improvement and don't happen every time. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I was pushing for humans getting bonus skill points which keeps the generalist nature of humans, but giving them less than the skill points needed to raise nonhuman skills. The option of an extra trait might be too much depending upon what was chosen. Even with the extra experience penalty, a divine touch, elite warrior, with one other major trait could be come extremely powerful without using skill points. The only way to maintain control is through more regulation. Just ask a Republican. Otherwise anyone can do it. Sorry Synergy, I think you should get magic as a member of the controllers. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

GF1 is easy for an agent. If you've gotten through the series as a guardian/warrior then the other choices will be no problem once you get used to a different playing style. Shaper/lifecrafter requires thinking about playing a group instead of an individual. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

That's because they are based on TSR (currently a division of Hasbro) books. Look at almost any cover of The Dragon with a female on it and see how sexist they are. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

A4 is the first of the Avernum games where experience decreases significantly when your level is higher than the monster's level. So as you get higher you get fewer level increases. The skill bonuses of nonhumans and especially the nephil more than make up for the lower levels due to XP penalty. You don't really get penalized for having high XP penalty since the associated skills that get added on are more than the skill points you would get for more levels using a lower penalty or even a XP bonus. You can play with humans, but you don't get all those nice weapon skill bonuses and gymnastics to avoid damage if you play a nephil. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

That's okay, Jeff created something even more annoying than GIFTSs and GIFTRs. Avernum 5 has a new annoyance. I wonder if the game will be released in time for it to find it's way into this episode. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

To raise money, try going back to home base and looting items that are marked NY (not yours) where no one will see you take them. Selling items is still your best bet until you are able to fight the toll fomarians. I need some more information for your other question. Exactly where are you when you can't leave? Galag-Trav has buttons that need to be pushed to open gates so you may have missed one. I doubt you will starve, but trying to fight with a weakened party is hard. You might have more luck posting in Nethergate forum since some members there don't like to read General (Hey Tyran is taking a vacation and he hates reading General). At high enough acid/poison resistance, you can basically shrug off damage since it's low and the regeneration from mass energize will heal it each round. The high endurance of these creations at the end of the game already helps and you pushed it to a safe zone. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

If you are in the regular display ESC, escape key, does send you to the menu of save game, preferences, etc. It doesn't work all the time, but it works enough so I don't have to use a mouse or the correct key. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I looked at my old game and I had a total rune reading of 56. I don't know what it was when I got the spell. At least you have an upper limit. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

ESC, the escape key, tends to work as a way to close most windows. The get command, "g" will usually work within two squares of any party member. It does get boring, but there is a limit to the amount of items you can get to sell for money. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

quote:No, Jeff does it deliberately to have a good laugh at his players. I just found a canister in A5 hidden behind a pillar 3 days ago that you can only find by moving the cursor over the hidden areas (you need the item inside to finish a quest easily). Get used to the idea of scanning the entire map this way whenever there is the slightest possibility of something being hidden by an object or wall. Jeff fixed A5 so you can attack and target monster using the keyboard as well as the mouse. For spell casting try using "c" to get a table with all the spells you can cast and then pick the letter. I found that I remembered most of the spell letters for mage and priest casting after a few days of playing. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Synergy in his tale did almost every town and camp. There is a limit where you get no experience for killing most things in the low 40s level characters. You already see it for a creationless character in the Fens of Aziraph. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |
