Jeff made it impossible to bring down the barrier without permission. It was causing problems because it made it impossible to do something else. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

This is the plot that should have been used for Avernum 4. No details, but it makes more sense and is new material. The downside is that the map makes for some block points where you can't just explore. Also moral decisions will limit what you can do later on in the game. I still think Jeff should let you roam wherever you want and if you go past your level then you die and start over. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I had this happen to me once. Back when you were first wandering around the Fort at the start you leave some doors open. During that first Nephil fight, they probably got killed and you didn't even notice it happening. So no quest reward. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

It's fun, you get to make all these moral geneforgish decisions as the bodies pile up around you. Do you stay loyal to the Empire, help Avenites, or join the Darkside. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Celt Beserker is the equivalent of Roman Training. Ups your damage and assures that you will always get hit. Actually at high levels after the demo, you are going to usally get hit anyway. Jeff did reduce its effectiveness from the original game. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Since I'm long past school and class, I'm learning how to irritate Jeff. It's amazing how quickly you can find something that he didn't think was possible to do early in a game. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Most of the barriers in the upper level of the Mage Colony only will go down with dispel barrier spell. A single piercing crystal doesn't work. There are some that will go with repeated usage of crystal, but save before trying. Go and explore to the west or finish the Honeycomb to build up experience. Daze spell is always your friend. Use it and then go after anyone that wasn't dazed first. It helps if you have some crystals to give extra attacks. You should have faced the Shaper in front of the gates before fighting the warriors inside the building to the south that has the gate control. I always found that spray crystals will usually kill his creations and seriously wound him. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Certain areas favor combat and others mechanics, so the choice does depend upon the character you create. Still the guide order should keep you from getting to an area before you can handle it. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

There's suppose to be a cheat to enter Erika's middle room. You have to go into and out of combat near the special that blocks the rear entrance. This sometimes will jump the party past the locked door. I haven't tried it myself. From what I've heard, it isn't worth the effort. Erika's Vahnatai style room is accessed from entering the rear of the tower and finding a secret passage to the west past the slimes. Then a secret door into the room. Save paper and there will come a point where you need a pen. One of the Sylak items will use the paper to write scrolls. You'll be able to get a pen nearby when you need it. You can save herbs for potion making. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I really like the Phil Foglio artwork, but then I grew up on What's New with Phil and Dixie. He has his own site at Studio Foglio for his older work too. It's always nice to look at some of it. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

First aid should be bought from the trainer to level 5. It works better later in the game where you can use it for regaining larger amounts of health and spell energy. For the starting area, it's better to just return to the Fort to rest up. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Try here for Roman and Celt. It's not that there are no useful skills, it's that you need to add to them at the right time so you are powerful enough to complete the early parts. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

The Cairn Gates has two ways through. One was meant to be leadership of 6 to talk the drakon into shutting down the field so you can get through. The other is combat where you fight and/or sneak your way up the east side to reach the control yourself. Mines require 8 mechanics for most of the first chapter to disarm. These were meant for players who wanted a less combat way of exploring. Battle alphas and the madden drake can be softened up with icy cystals and then killed, but you have to have some luck, hasted, and get in close to the drake so it can't use it's fiery breath. Battle alphas have to be hit from a distance so they can't melee with you. It helps to have health over 55 with augmentation spell or high endurance. They have a lot of health, so it can take more than a turn to destroy the real one. This is one area where it helps to have creations. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |
