Muskets were loaded at about just under minute depending upon the type so for warfare there were men just to reload and an extra loaded one was available to rotate. This worked better when you were in a fixed position and could protect the loader. That's why musketeers still used a sword. Most Western armor was still fairly cheap leather and leather with partail metal covering for the majority of the army. Heavy cavalary was the elite. Even then a large number of low armor men could destroy heavy armor if they could reduce the armor's advantage by swarming or keeping a horseman from reaching them. Swiss pikes would block cavalry from approaching if supported with enough archery. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Doing the Hagfen quest to kill the Selkie chief gives you the option of gaining 3 levels in either craft or beast circle for one person. Killing Raven in the Jagged Aerie gives you the All Circle scroll for 3 levels in healing, war, beast, and craft circle for one person. So it's possible to get break barrier spell. Killing Raven is hard as a singleton Sylak's wisdom crystal gives some experience once a day. The amount decreases as you gain levels. I think there are 2 or 3 barriers that you don't break as a Roman just using piercing crystals. Testing to see if the barrier can be walked through helps before using one. Annwn has one for killing monsters in a prison and to get at a box, and there is one in Castle Aethdoc that just leads to a piece of amber that I skip [ Tuesday, September 25, 2007 12:37: Message edited by: Randomizer ] Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

PBS' Globetrekker series showed a reenactment of the Battle of Hastings recently. The rationale for chainmail armor was protection from penetrating wounds that could lead to later infection. Platemail and later heavy armor was designed to deflect blows as well as block direct hits from projectiles so that only crushing blow damage would happen unless you penetrated at a joint. Armor fell aside as the English with the longbow and other nations with crossbows became a means to penetrate armor before an enemy could physically engage. The end of the Hundred Years War had this as a characteristic of key battles. This lead the shift back to lighter armor for melee engagements where some protection was needed, but it wasn't possible to withstand firearms or arrows. The reasoning behind the East not using metal armor was probably economic where it was cheaper to mass produce without using metal. After all the bulk of European armies used leather armor and metal was used by the wealthier nobles. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

a) what is sylak mortar & pestle good for? In the original game it created ingredient herbs, now I think it increases the chance of getting extra potions when you make them. b) anyone have a list of all sylak items and what are they used for? (not locations of them) No. The only ones that really help are Sylak's pen for making scrolls from paper (really useful), Sylak's chaotic dice for gaining XP in dice games in the Hollow Hills, northwest of Galag-Trav, and as Romans on the luck test. Sylak's dancing cloth produces clothing items for sale, but most are now unsellable. Sylak's nourishing bowl produces food that is helpful when you do Annwn, but not needed. c) is first aid skill any good when playing singleton? If you buy the training and have a kit with you then you can use it to replace health and spell energy 3 times a day. Saves on potions outside of combat. d) is there anywhere i can buy levels in war circle skill as roman? Hagfen sells war circle skill, but only 2 levels if you aren't already at level 2, so probably no in practice. It does help for beast and craft circles. If I remember correctly the info on the onyx scepter is available from a mage hidden in Dharmon's northwest corner accessible by entering from the north and using the boat. You'll get sent to see Sulfras west of Fort Remote. I had that problem too. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

There should be one inner gate open with the Romans going to the north wing and the Celts allowed into the south wing. Also there is an area to the west around the center where the Eye is stored that should be explored. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

There are 6 tiles with the Romans unable to get to one of them. They relate to the 6 caraytid stone guardians that can appear outside the gate that leads to Titus. Every one you destroy is one less that you have to face in combat. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

It was GF1 in the sealed lab where Tek was a canister junkie looking for life after death. I figured it got sold on Sucia Island and taken with into GF2 when some serviles came to Drypeak. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

The easiest way is to look for the script for the Temple of Brigante dlg.txt under Celts and read through it until you find the dialog regarding the quest. There will be a line giving the sdf flag being changed and what the new number is to have the quest done and what the reward for it is. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

You'll find that avoiding using it after the first time reduces your character's effectiveness. It first appears in Exile 3. Avernum 3 is the remake. You have a choice of keep using it to get through the game or going cold turkey. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

There's usually a point where the game starts to have repetitive elements. There may be new monsters and a different subplot, but it's similar to something you've done before. In Avernum 4, there were two places where the opponent split into 4 images where only one took damage. You knew how to deal with this the second time around. Different stories about them and what you fight around them, but same basic solution. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Levers aren't the only things hidden that way. There are a few boxes, sacks, and a body hidden by walls and hedges. Get in the habit of moving the cursor around after you've cleared a zone. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Given sufficient time someone would find a way either within the game's rules or a hack to achieve the desired effect. The problem with a MMORPG is that with too many users in the same area, any monster that pops in is instantly swarmed. They tried to avoid this with online D&D, but then you are required to play as a team and can't just wander around as an individual. Plenty of unique RPG adventures, but it becomes computerized modules. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I haven't played A2 as a singleton, but Empire Archers have extremely high hit ability. From my A3 singleton experience, I found that high dexterity and defense helps with both going first and reducing the chance of being hit. Use santuary spell to buy some time to buff up and recruit some summoned friends to provide extra targets when you attack. You can't rely on just magic since some monsters (rakshasas) are highly magic resistance so build up archery and/or melee damage. Archery works better since you can attack without moving and don't have to worry about your opponent filling the area with meatshield summoned creatures. That part of the skills seems right. But the Roman should have tool use 4 and the Druid should have 4 in the druidism and the first 4 spell circles. Check and see if the druid can cast spells. It shouldn't have gotten past testing so if this still a problem, then you have a corrupt file. In which case redownload and go back to the start before returning to Vanarium to hire. The last WoT book was fairly decent after the last few before it were just milking the franchise. It'll probably get finished just because the publisher can't afford to lose a best selling series. There have been worse ones that are still going strong. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

The first one is west of Grindstone involves doing damage to a shade. The second one is north of Formello and you just need to survive the damage without having to attack or leave the testing area (get called a coward). Wearing the thick tunic and other cold protection helps, but it's mostly just staying healed up and go into the fight hasted and shielded. It takes practice to do it without losing anyone. The third one is northwest of Cotra and near Fort Draco where you have to do different types of damage every few rounds. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

These only occur if you do the 6 tests out of order. Then a map appears with an X to show where the previous test is located. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |
