what do you think of summoning? in The Avernum Trilogy

I've used Arcane Summon a few times. I really don't mind using the spell points (I carry around a lot of Energy potions), and the monsters you get are better "meat shields" than "Create Illusions" monsters that die in one hit.

I generally don't like summoning, though, and it's annoying: a. when opponents won't fight you head-on by summoning endless monsters with endless SP, and b. so many spells were dedicated to summoning. There are a few more creative spells that could have been added in their place.

I'm supprised so many other people think the same way about it I do, though. Jeff doesn't seem to.

Well, IF Jesus is God, then God is male:

Jesus = Male
Jesus = God
God = Male
(I say IF because it's not generally accepted by non-religious types and non-Christians)

It's also not the "sex" that's important, it's the personification. We call God "Our Father," partly to show his power and guidance. In general, men are larger and have greater physical strength than women, so the imagery is that of a male to show that He is more powerful than us.

Of course, I agree with Friendly Whomp. People use magic stupidly, or evily, but it's not bad (well, since it's not real). Like by Rentar, that was a good point.

By the way, I heard that some other people had killed her in other ways before, but I did it too. I did Major Poison to her over and over, using the editor to restore Spell Points, doing 1 to 2 damage at a time (sometimes 3!). Has anyone else done it in some other way?

Of course it's just as immoral! Whether you make someone/thing "unintelligent" or not, what matters is the end result...

And about the overpopulation: That will never happen, at least in our lifetime. It's one thing to create a pandemic or planetary disaster, and it's another to maintain it. People will die off due to lack of natural resources if the world becomes overpopulated for no more than a few years, and people will be forced to stop using fossil fuels eventually if the global warming theory proves itself valid in the near future.

Sorry I got off on a tangent...

Oh, freak, I thought I was the only one annoyed by the "two step" annoyance from A1. Setting the speed lower didn't seem to work for me, and I just need to have it higher anyway, for everything else (got a lot of work to do killing those Imperial Slugs)!

It would be REALLY cool if Mr. Vogel would release updates to the engines and bugs and stuff for registered users of his games. I would be on this site, like, eight times as much as I already am. Which isn't that much, actually. Sorry guys...

Yes, I know it probably belongs on the Trilogy boards. But I was going to start out with the beggar in Sattle from "Backwater Calls," then I went into a full-fledged rant against the Anama to offend a few and entertain the rest.

Thanks to whoever moved it here.

That extremist cult just gets in the way of everything! Reject magic, bah! To what end? No wonder they couldn't purge those weakling cockroaches.

But they can't even handle living by their own principles! They use piercing crystals and a little spell many of us know as DIVINE FIRE! So there's really no Anama who fully lives by his own doctrine, only "cafeteria Anama," like wanabe "Catholic" politicians

Nobody really needed four secret agents of Avernum to go up and exterminate the cockroaches, if they would just bite their tounges and cast a few Far Sights around the island, finding the source and destroying the feeble machinery that kept the "plague" going. No, they had it easiest of all, but they would not only not take advantage of it, but they stifled anyone else using mage spells, trying to make a difference. And whoever wasn't a part of their hippy "peace and love" and "let's not just get bitten by weakling bugs, but let's do it TOGETHER while coughing and wheezing pathetically" majority, for that matter.

I stole the Anama's treasure. I bought fake rings to invade their inner sanctum. I responded "No" to the priests philosophy questions around the island. I don't regret it.

Oh, and you know that beggar in "Backwater Calls" who keeps saying, "reject magic! The end is coming!" Well, I blasted him with a level 10 Arcane Blow spell just for the heck of it.

I played all of the starters, the scenarios on the boards, and "Death at Chapman's."

I think that is all that's out so far. I just can't wait for A4 to come out. I think I'll send some pizzas to Spidweb (I live nearby) in return for advance screenshots. ;)

Sorry to jump in...

1. I voted for Bush. More than foreign policy, I back him more on moral issues and problems back here. I think that Jack Kemp should be the Eternal Supreme Emperor of the Multiverse, though.

2. I flip-flopped on the war. I was one of the protesters, but now that I look back on it, it was more justified for other reasons people don't mention.

I think we're almost done there, though. At the first sign of us pulling out, the Iraqi people will want to get a grip on their own country, which is the ultimate goal for Iraq, whether anyone wants to say it or not. This isn't just about their freedom, but about their independence, "teaching them to fish."

Perhaps you're trying to open it with the wrong Avernum game, or have the wrong folder open?

Try doing a search for all the ".sav" files on your computer.

By the way, it says at the bottom that she "tries to purge" the poison. Does her shade die of the actual poison, or energy spent trying to purge it? Or both?

I'm not sure if that fight was even fair; all of a sudden, you're fighting this invincible ghost and all a player thinks he/she can do is pull the party out of the scenario because of some imaginary "bug." Perhaps there should have been an explaination on "monsters who can absorb conditions" earlier in the game. It would have made that battle seem less arbitrary and more fulfilling. ;)

If everything else got over fine, I don't see why your save files didn't. If you really need them, check everywhere in your folders; you may have misplaced them. Otherwise, it really shouldn't take more than 20-30 scenarios to get your party back up to the forties. I don't use a Mac, so there's not much more I can say about it.

I just tried killing whatshername... Luna... fighting for the Empire thinking she might drop it, but to no luck. It appears that Stalker's third in command wielded no more than a crappy yew bow.

The yew tree was once thought to be a weed down in the South often in Texas, and was cut away until the point of endangerment. Yews are finally starting to come back now.

36 - PLEASE! YES YES! Remove that stupid level cap for all eternity! I personally banish it to Hell! It makes the game so BORING after a certain point, namely what is supposed to be, "the good part."

Oh, and I'm also one of the jerks who thinks Avernum would be cool online somehow. Or some game similar to it! Yay!

Almighty Jeff, do you copy?

That was one of the most interesting and brilliant parts of any scenario I've ever seen, between the designing and allusion it makes to that when Kass describes the battle going on between bretheren outside.

And don't feel too bad; it took me, like, 7 minutes to figure out that one on my own!
One thing you could do is switch your leader to a non-fighter or someone with the least AP, to make it easier to kill/deflect the drake lord, avoid your leader's attacks, and destroy the evil altar quickly.

I believe there is supposed to be a boat in one of the last towns that describes itself as a dock. I haven't seen it there. Has anyone else experienced that?

Also, the name "Arghadz" is a perfect anagram for "Garzhad." This, for the Vahnatai, should be absolutely blasphemous.

Are you sure you're not playing "Canopy?" If that's what you're doing, then the one you're probably missing is in the NW of the underground of the Bugbear lair.

Somewhere along the West side of the caves underneath, there are two very large bombs that look just like brown wine barrels. Pick them up by "looking" at them. Then go upstairs right in the middle of the fort on top, where you should see a huge stone pillar. Go up to it, and it will ask you if you want to blow it up (yes, of course!). You must fight two Bugbears who magically turn themselves invisible before you can go on.
Go back downstairs underground, and head to the NW. Now there will be a hole in the brown wall that was there before. SAVE your game, and CAUTIOUSLY take the last symbol. The instant you do, a statue nearby will turn into a a powerful monster that looks something like a Demon Golem with special powers. (you could haste yourself before you take the symbol, and take it while in combat mode so you can attack the creature right away)

By the way, I have a little bone to pick with Jeff: wooden barrels and crates do not sink in the water; they FLOAT!

I played it, too. It was a nice short-story scenario, with (thank God) little room for bugs.

It reminded me of that Simpsons where Homer becomes Death, and he goes around killing people he wants to, and then gets to kill Patty.

Betcha it'll be up on the download board soon.
