I'd be glad to create custom graphics for people. I am more experienced with BoE graphics, but I'm sure it ain't that hard to pick up the additional dimension. ;) -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |
What will scripts actually look like? in Blades of Avernum | |

Scripts are neato and all, but does anybody know what happens when they go wrong? In c++, a misplaced semi-colon will result in a little error message and a highlighting of the offending line of code. However, an error in a BoA script, if not caught by the programmer nor a "compiler" (if such a thing would exist) could crash the program and/or corrupt some memory. Anybody know anything about that? -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

Keep in mind that Exiles aren't all nice people. There are a lot of crazy loons who got sent down to the pit, along with the dissenters. The Exiles come down to The Pit, filled with anger and a taste for revenge against the empire. The Nephils and Sliths have built their own little far away settlements. But some Exiles see the other races as encroaching their land, so some tension builds. When tension builds between different races that don't speak the same languages (generally), one thing leads to another and soon there's a war going on. And after a lot of time passes, the children of all the original Exiles grow up hating the other races because of their parents, so they have inborn prejudices. Same with the children of the other two races. Hope that wordy explanation cleared it up! -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

Take the time to learn Stuff Done Flags. They were insanely complicated to almost everybody when the editor just came out. Practice using SDF's in little test scenarios just to get a feel for them. In my opinion, the hardest part of SDF's is keeping track of them, as forgetting to archive a single one can mean disaster for your scenario and those who play it. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

OOC: I've decided to give this RP a try. We'll see how long I last before I get trampled through the silicon floor by a million posts a minute. IC: Stepping into the scene is a dragon of slightly smaller stature than most others Avernites are used to. Her scales were pale blue, tinged with pink at the tips, like thousands of little glaciers creating a patchwork pattern over the stately beast. Despite a height of only 20 feet up, and a length of merely 80 feet from head to tail, Athron seems like a queen among dragons. OOC: Yes, Sulfras is s'posed to be the queen. But Athron is noble, whereas Sulfras is a traiterous B'I have an itch. IC: Striding forth (as well a dragon can stride), Athron gave Motrax a good hard look. "You haven't been doing your job, dearie!" "Well... uhhh..." mumbled Motrax. "That's right! You've been scared of all the 'fast' posting, haven't you? Well, it looks like you can rest easy now, windbag, because Mother is taking over the museum! ... Why is that spot on the floor dirty!? Haven't you been cleaning this place!? How do you expect anybody to want to enter a museum covered in filth? Get to work!" "Yes ma'am." -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

The best casting would definitely be the Collect Lady as a naga (only because there aren't any medusas to be played). Think of the horror - the adventurers plummet through the floor in the giant caverns and find themsleves surrounded by the most terrifying visages ever to exist on Ermarion (sp?). Steven Segall should play the Mad Monks. That way he could to any sorts of crazy, stupid stunts and they would fit right in. Also, he would continue the trend of being almost utterly invincible (Executive Descision is the only movie where Segall actually dies). And yes, DeCaprio would make a perfect Chevyn. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

Motrax, happily lying in the back of a bulldozer, began to sing a song: "I like, I like, I like, to roast! I like to roast, and toast, and post! One thousand toasts, one thousand posts, I do so like to eat my toast! "I'm glad I'm not, an insolent knave! If I was so, I wouldn't behave! And if I did not, behave, behave! I would not use, any Burma Shave!" Motrax, obviously quite drunk, fell back to sleep. Little did he know the trouble that was to come up ahead... OOC: That's right, the next post had better have some trouble in it! -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

Something similar happened to me a while ago. It's a problem that can't really be fixed. Email Jeff about reinstalling registered copies (if you did indeed register the game). He'll tell you everything you need to know. If you don't have the game registered, just download it again. Jeff's email is spidweb@spidweb.com. Include your name with the email so he can find you in his magical list of registered people. Surprisingly, I had this problem with Exile 3. The graphic programming is probably similar with all the games. I run them with 32-bit Trucolor and they work fine, so emailing Jeff is the best thing to do if you are registered, and reinstalling is best otherwise. That was long-winded. I am a dragon though... so I guess that's ok. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

I'm not sure that would be better. It would require extra clicks, and most things that come in multiples are things that you wouldn't want to pick up, so they would (hopefully) get filtered out anyway. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

The only advantage to this would be dropping items in crates, and then pushing crates into water. Even with the BoE system, there are plenty of variants on this theme that work without dropping items in crates. There isn't any other use for dropping items around you instead of underneath you, besides a little bit of asthetic pleasure, which comes as a low priority when creating a game such as BoA. And besides, programming this wouldn't be so simple. Not nearly simple enough to justify putting such an insignificant extra in the game. As for the shortening item list idea, that sounds great! It is quite a hassle to scroll through many items. Thanks for mentioning it, Boeing. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

Is there anything the scripting system can't do? I am not asking that rhetorically - it seems that any specific functions can just be accomplished with scripting, aside from changing the core code of the game. Oh, and I'm still awaiting the day when you take pre-orders. ;) -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

When I emailed Jeff asking about preorders, he said he wouldn't even consider it until May. And he said this would be a year in advance. And knowing computer games, it will take longer to come out. So you still have about 2 years to play BoE. It is definitely worth your while. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

I do like the 4 person party more, because it's a lot easier to manage. I myself am sticking with the 1 person party approach, and I've added yet another handicap by refusing to put any points into priest or mage skill. As for NPC's, this scripting system Jeff has us all hyped up about looks like it will enable us to do almost anything, including NPC management. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |

Horses would be nice, but I think they would become more of a burden in the end. When your character is immune to fire and a buncha drakes all breath fire on you, it's the horse (and thus, your wallet and convenience) that suffers. Then again, adding mounted combat would put quite a new twist in the game. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1614 | Registered: Wednesday, January 23 2002 08:00 |
