Not Dante, FF4. FF4 in turn took them from Dante. However, since those four demons are not grouped together in any way in Dante, but they are grouped together in FF4, the fact that TM chose them (as opposed to, say, Alichino or Libicocco) suggests an FF4 pull. :P

Evidently Square took all their villains' names from The Divine Comedy in FF4.

Edit: After spending a while surfing, I forgot to refresh the page. Thus I get beaten to the punch.

Perhaps, but FF4 calls 'em Rubicant, Kainazzo, Valvalis and Milon.

EDIT: Wait, they don't even get "Cagnazzo" right.

No, the bowdlerized English translations call them that. The original game's transliterations into Japanese are pretty solid, as far as I can tell:
Barbariccia (?????? Barubarishia)
Cagnazzo (?????? Kainattso)
Rubicante (????? Rubikante)
Scarmiglione (???????? Sukarumiry?ne)

Edit: Hmp. The Japanese characters came through fine when I copied and pasted from here. Stupid UBB.

The japanese version does do a decent job with the names (acharacteristically so), but I didn't really play the japanese version, now did I? :P
EDIT: And are you really sure that the translations are "Bowdlerized?"

Heh. I suppose not. Somewhat ironically after your comments that I didn't account for the untranslated Fire Emblem games.

And yeah, the original U.S. localizations were *definitely* bowdlerized -- the SNES one and I think also the PS release, though I haven't played that one. Besides the Easytype modifications, and the random plot details they omitted (Kain's father, Zemus's motivation, etc.), they removed the porno magazine, they toned down the comments Edge and Rydia make to each other, and they edited graphics for Cecil and Rosa getting it on and the nearly naked dancer in Baron, and they changed the scythe in the Tower of Zot to a big ball.

Edit: Not to mention Nintendo of America's habitual expurgation of anything vaguely religious.

Fansubbed version, hardtype.

(And I'd call it less of a "scythe" and more of an "axehead" or "guillotine.")

EDIT: And didn't Kain also call Rosa a ***** before the Tower of Zot?

Yes, the J2E fansub is much better. And yeah, "sharp rounded blade descending from above." And yeah to Kain, although I'm guessing that could be translated in various ways -- or does Japanese have a specific word that corresponds exactly to b-?

In response to Zephyr's post:

So many of your people are gone to the mainland, and so is your ship. While it may be close, it doesn't know anything is wrong. Also, I'd hardly call your stone block a character, since nobody can resurrect him yet anyway. Besides, you were warned in the terms of the original treaty.

Three people. That's hardly what I'd call 'many'...and I never said anything about the Bordrao going anywhere. It IS STILL AT THE DOCKS. Don't do this. Can't I RP without you always telling me what to do with all these 'treaties'? And like I've said, today's been a horrible day, and I don't need something like this!

I seem to have misread some of your old posts ...

Still, where is the Bordrao? It went somewhere and I didn't see it come back.

The Bordrao is still at the Bordrao Camp Docks. It hasn't moved since it emerged from the water, and it will not move until Hmethrrr gives the word, which is hard since the special crystals can't be used very often, and he's far from White Peak Island.

Hey, everybody. Just wanted to say that I'm going to be out of the loop for a few days. My laptop died last night, and I found out today that the hard drive is finally giving up the ghost. I was able to save some stuff to CDs, probably enough to re-establish my comp when it's repaired.

And thankfully, I was able to save my BoA work (oh yeah, and my school work).

But regardless, I'm going to be stuck with lab computers for a while, so I won't be posting for a while. Hopefully I won't be left behind.

I doubt it. The OOC thread is moving faster than the RP itself anyway.

Until I revise my post, assume that I have begun a large-scale attack on White Peak Island.

Slarty, I don't mean to be too pushy here, but your roster is practically begging for an update.

Okay. People are getting confused. We need to decide if the Hunters are still alive or not. Dintiradan assumes they aren't. I want to assume they aren't. What's more Ephesos and TM assume that they're alive. So are they or aren't they alive? (Not counting the rebels) Oh and Ephesos, if your worried about your taskforce then have that be the first contact between my new faction and yours.

I'm fine with the Hunters staying. I'm fine with the Hunters leaving. What I'm not fine with is the Hunters in a state of limbo.

I've tried to keep my posts ambiguous, but soon I'm going to have to know for sure. I want to know if I have to defend my western border. I want to know if I can go to Fort Emergence. I want to know if I can slacken off on the Nephilim deportation if Thralni comes south.

This wrangling is positively ridiculous by now. I can't fault anyone for not liking their faction anymore, but to pull something like this without a proper build-up is just bad form. Oh well.

--

Just as a note, I have not dropped out, but as I told some of you, I still have a cold and can't concentrate enough to write well (and I don't want to write crappily). I'll catch up with the story tomorrow and hopefully post.

What death? You mean, "turn into a necromantic cult, then the leader kills himself, then some priests come around and everything is magically solved?"

The best death at this point would be to have the officers lead a rebellion. I provided Lyonard as the perfect opportunity to have someone rise to lead the rebellion. (In fact, if you want me to kill off your faction for you, I'll be using him to do so.)

The Hunters in Avernum still exist and have absolutely no idea that any of this has happened, so they should operate as usual- perhaps splintering off into their own faction, or perhaps getting killed off.

I (and others) can kill this faction off for you- just that, the way you did it was painfully lame without any sense of causality.

Dintiradin- So far as the Dominion is concerned, the Hunters may or may not be a faction, but their power structure is effectively K.O.ed. That means that your western border won't be threatened any time soon, and any groups that aren't in contact with Krizsan (ie, those in Avernum) are operating the same as they would otherwise.

First of all TM, I never had soldiers in Avernum. The soldiers I think you're talking about are the ones on the surface side of Fort Emergence. Also Tygra didn't kill himself. He was killed by a random archer. Alos not all spells last after their caster dies. Tygra's spell was one of them. That is why the destruction of the Hunters happened so fast. What's more there is still the rebels which I have pointed out numerous times.
