Item Lore isn't very reliable; I never bother to get any. You're better off finding a sage to identify your items for you; most towns have one.

Your stomach is full of acid, and yet somehow you manage to survive. Rotdhizons are like your stomach, only more so.

You showered? This morning. Technically, yesterday morning, since it's now after midnight.
You lost your cell phone? Where? Haven't yet. Worst thing I've done to it is drop it down a flight of stairs; it still works, though.
You lost your keys? Locked them somewhere? I've locked my car keys in my car twice this year. The first time I had a spare key handy. The second time I had to call my insurance company's roadside service hotline to break into my car for me.
You cut your hair? Around the start of this year. I am perilously close to having a mullet.
You overslept? Ha. Don't talk to me about sleep. I didn't sleep at all last Sunday night.

Current:
Mode of transportation? Well, currently I'm not moving anywhere, but when I commute I use a car.
Book you are reading? Nothing but academic papers right now. Call back in a week when my thesis is finished.
Model of cell phone? LG U8360. It's not very good.
Jewlery you are wearing? Just what are you trying to imply here?
Game you are playing? If I hadn't been struck by a sudden urge to replay Might & Magic III, my thesis would be done by now. :/

Fav:
Cartoon? you can include cartoons that you used to like Neon Genesis Evangelion. And yes, I'm entirely aware that it's for wankers.
Baseball team? Congratulations. You're officially a cultural imperialist.
Location? Here. Interpret that as you will.
SW oldbie *grins smugly*
SW newbie? I hate all of you equally.

Have you ever?
Stalked someone? Yes.
Been in love? See above.
Missed TM? Yes, but only when I'm sufficiently bored to actively want the SW forums to explode in a dramastorm.
Gotten lost? My sense of direction sucks, but I keep a street directory in my car. So far I haven't become sufficiently lost that I was unable to find my place on it.
Thrown a pie at someone? Do I look like a clown to you? (Hint: the correct answer is "no".)

Random
First quote that pops into your head? "I hate you." -- W.C. Fields
Name a red object in your room Do I have to be able to see it? If not, my blood. If yes, I'll cut myself and give the same answer.
Name a song that makes you sad Puff the Magic Dragon. I first heard it when I was 5 and it still makes me cry. Yes, I am in fact as pathetic as you think I am.
If you could remove a person from history, who would it be? Immanuel Kant. He just pisses me off.
If you could call someone a 'best friend', who would that be? If you know the person, you know the answer. If you don't know the person, my answer wouldn't mean anything to you.

Favorite adjective -- Pointy.
Favorite city founded before 0 -- Catal Huyuk.
Favorite computer or video game released before 1990 -- Nobody's mentioned Ultima IV yet? What's wrong with you people? Phantasy Star comes in at a close second.
Favorite historical war -- The Anglo-Zanzibar War. What's more badass than convincing your opponent to surrender within less than an hour of hostilities commencing? Nothing, that's what.
Favorite method of execution -- Crushing by elephant. Because hey, elephants are cool.
Favorite philosopher other than Socrates -- Baruch Spinoza. I hardly even agree with anything he says; he just seems like a really nice guy.
Favorite poet -- Eww, poetry. Let's say Ogden Nash, since three words is about as long a poem as I can tolerate.
Favorite politican (living or dead) -- Francis Bacon.
Favorite scurrilous talk show host -- Ricki Lake.
Favorite young children's book (i.e., a picture book) -- Grug. No, you're not expected to have heard of it if you're not Australian.

I find that the availability of trainers is a bigger limit on training than the availability of cash. I know a lot of people recommend waiting until Camp Samuels to train in Bows and Sharpshooter, but honestly, what's the point? Given that the Eastern Gallery is the toughest part of the game, going through it without bow skills for the sake of a couple of skill points saved later on seems kinda dumb.

The best comparison may be the item descriptions in A2. Caffren projects "angry whispering of this being" and Jekknol projects "angry, vicious muttering of this tormented creature" while Vyvnas projects "soft, gentle whisper of the being". Honestly, Vyvnas could have been tortured enough to make him go crazy, but I think it's more likely they got mixed up at some point.

Well, if that's the case, I have them mixed up too. I have a distinct recollection of meeting Vyvnas in E3 and noting that he was utterly deranged. Odd.

encumbrance and negative effects (exile 1) in The Exile Trilogy
...b10010b...

Be warned that Defence doesn't actually help very much. Even if you have a lot of it, it usually only reduces your effective encumbrance by a point or two, and you can't always count on it to do even that.

You don't need armour to protect yourself anyway. Just cast a lot of Bless spells when you get into combat. A character blessed four or five times is unhittable to most things.

Casting Web can block people's view too, if there are enough webs between you and them.

Each point of encumbrance reduces your chance to hit by 5%, which isn't so bad. More significantly, having too much of it means you sometimes get less action points in combat, which is bad. It also causes mage spells to fail if you have more than 1 point. Try to limit encumbrance to 2 for non-mages, and always limit it to 1 for mages.

2-When I go to the starting room NW to rest up and get back SPs I keep getting a message "You can't rest while in combat". But, I'm NOT in combat. The battle is over and I see no stragglers to kill. I need my SPs back! :>
Help appreciated.
Is your party still split up into individual PCs? If so, press the little "End" button to end combat mode.

Well, most of Exile's spells are special-purpose spells that you probably won't find much use for, or variations on other spells. There are a few gems in among them, though. All the different "field" spells (Conflagration, Wall of Force, etc.) are great if you know how to use them tactically, and their only analogue in Avernum is Cloud of Blades, which isn't available until high levels.

Yeah, I feel pitiful with my level one characters out there fighting. My guy with a bow can't hit for crap.
Bows aren't very good in Exile, and they're only a little better in Avernum.

Anyway, everyone's going to miss a lot at low levels. In Exile, put as many points as you can in Melee, Bashing or Pole Weapons skill; weapon skills are better value than Dexterity, as long as you're willing to stick with one weapon type for each character. Once your weapon skills get to around 10, you won't miss as much. In Avernum, the numbers are a little different but the general principle is the same.

Far be it from me to make you feel more of an oaf than you already do, but editing rather than double posting is considered good etiquette around these parts, especially when there's such a short time between the two posts. No harm done, of course; just something to keep in mind.

Sure. We just have to fix the human appetite regulation system so that a reasonable weight setpoint is more rigorously enforced, and so that people are actually capable of having enough of a good thing. Trouble is, arguing in favour of genetically modifying humans, even in principle, doesn't go over well in political circles. Believe me; I've tried. :P
