Is Plot Important? in Blades of Avernum | |

The reason I don't like the "plot above all" attitude is that I feel it's destructive to other aspects of the scenario. Many people who hold plot as vital seem to also hold the opinion that combat can't possibly be the major source of fun in a scenario, because they think combat is inevitably boring and repetitive, because they haven't really made the effort to see how it can be made interesting, because of course plot is more important. Then, when a scenario like Canopy that does have good combat comes along, these people complain because it's too hard, because they're not used to combat that actually requires a different strategy to the repetitive Avernumish stuff they're used to slogging through. Or, worse still, they complain because they're so used to the idea of watching for the plot and seeing everything else as secondary that they don't really appreciate good combat. Seriously, people. Why are you here? If you want plot, go read a novel. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Fun fact: the so-called "true damascene" swords were almost certainly from India, not Damascus, whereas many "false damascene" swords were in fact from Damascus. Metallurgical techniques in Syria just weren't that advanced. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

If you mean this scenario, it's not by Bruce Mitchell. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

You shouldn't need to warp the party out of the scenario, just out of town. I'm pretty sure Lycan's location resets if you leave town and return. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

This is not a bug, it's a feature. Cloud of Blades does damage proportional to a monster's HP; it would do hundreds of points of damage to some of the bosses, completely unbalancing the combat. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! You can't kill him. You were meant to keep from waking him up, basically by avoiding the western hallway. There's a warning about this in the readme. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Seems to me that the solution to this, as with many of life's problems, is to beat TM around the head until he stops making life hard for others. EDIT: I'm not really supposed to do this, but I disabled TM's avatar. Visit without fear. I'm not sure exactly what you're asking for, but does going into the preferences and disabling images entirely not serve your purpose? It's only one checkbox, so it's easy to undo. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Assassination seems to randomly cause double damage (5% per level of Assassination, plus/minus 5% per XP level difference between attacker and defender? That's a pure guess but seems consistent with the way Jeff does things). Lethal Blow seems to randomly cause triple damage. It may or may not be possible for the two to act cumulatively on one attack. I believe Strength, Blademaster, and Melee/Pole Weapons (or whatever stat the weapon is linked to; remember, in theory, it can be any stat) all add one die of damage per level of the respective stat (I'm sure about Strength and Melee/Pole; I'm making an educated guess that Blademaster works the same way). Anatomy may or may not work the same way; I suspect it doesn't, though. On the other hand, if you make it so that it does, I doubt it'll create horribly unrealistic damage values. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Technically, I think the "cold" creations' breath weapons are of the magic/energy element. So you can think of Cryoas and Cryodrayks as breathing plasma or something if it makes you feel better. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Well, you only NEED to if you want to solve the troglo/giant plague. You can solve the golem plague instead and still win the game. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Are you sure the character holding the special spell you're trying to use has enough SP to use it? It generally won't do much good to have a fighter carry them. Other than that, I'm not sure what could be wrong. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Could well be that the CD is dodgy; sometimes things get damaged in the mail. Make sure your CD drive is working properly before asking for a replacement, though. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Firstly, I hope you have some source of invulnerability (you can buy lots of potions in town, but if you didn't buy them, that's not much use to you now.) Energy potions wouldn't go astray either. If you don't have any invulnerability potions (or maybe even if you do), Lichtschild works pretty well and blesses your party too -- although you'll have to recast it every couple of rounds if you want to maintain invulnerability. Whichever of Trahison's lieutenants escaped in the previous fight, kill him as soon as possible with a melee fighter; make this a priority, as they hit hard but die easy. Take care of the minor fighters by having one of your mages use Tetra-Disaster repeatedly if you have it; if not, just use Fireblast or Lightning Spray. For Trahison himself, have an invulnerable melee fighter use Flammenentwurf repeatedly if you have it; if you have enough spell points to spare, have a mage use Baldev if you have it. If you don't have Flammenentwurf or Baldev, you're in trouble; you'll have to use Fireblast, which will take a lot of SP.
