Does the Foundation series get less implicitly sexist after the first book? I don't know if Asimov was consciously misogynistic, but my impression of Foundation was that of a 1950s culture transposed into a high-technology world. It's one of the main reasons I think he compares poorly to his contemporary John Wyndham. Don't get me wrong; Foundation's a brilliant book plotwise, but IA's speculations on culture are of a pretty white-picket-fence nature. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! If there are no mages to the south, it's probably because they ran north to attack you and you killed them already. Search the ground for dropped special spells. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |
Is Plot Important? in Blades of Avernum | |

Plot is important to designers because it's usually the main thing that motivates them enough to finish their scenarios; plot is important to players because it provides a sense of direction (without a plot of some sort, it's pretty hard to give players an idea of where they can or should go next). Beyond that, creating a plot that's going to do anything emotionally for a significant proportion of players is a difficult task, and not an essential one. Plenty of people still play roguelikes, after all. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Dan Z, if you can handle playing as far as Vanarium with the Romans, you can get Rhian as an NPC; she starts with several levels in Craft Circle. You can also get Craft Circle spell levels from Hagfen for completing the hags' quests. And yes, this forum doesn't exactly approve of resurrecting old topics. Creating a new topic is considered a lesser evil than making people scroll all the way to the end of an old topic to find your message. As far as I know, disk images don't improve compression in any way. .zip, like any data compression format, is lossless anyway, and I haven't noticed a significant improvement in file size. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! You go to the thread you posted in to rate the scenario before, and this time you include in your rating a number from 1 to 10. This isn't rocket surgery. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

The latest .cmg still doesn't work for me. It's 804k in size, but trying to open it in ResEdit reveals that it has no resource fork. It doesn't seem to be a .bmp file either, so I don't know what it is. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Linus Pauling once made a very apt analogy about ideas, which it would unfortunately be against the Code of Conduct to post here in its original form. Suffice it to say that everyone has ideas; the problem is that no idea is much use on its own. If you work from someone else's idea, you'll never be motivated to finish. The only good reason to make a scenario is because you have something to say. Think of something you want to show people, then think of a story that will show it. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! If you put as much effort into plot and gameplay as you're putting into terrain design, I get the feeling this scenario of yours is going to turn out quite impressive. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Sorry; you have to follow Canopy's plot the way it's meant to be followed. But a little bird told me TM's next scenario just might involve a branching plot. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Actually, some (but not all) cursed items don't seem to be properly cursed for me either. I assumed this was just because they weren't defined as such. My suspicion is that curse working/not working has to do with the type of item it is. Try Morog's Scepter in Za-Khazi Run; I know for a fact that was cursed for me. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! I'm on Mac OS 10.1.5 running the latest version of BoA, and not only do outdoor signs not work for me, signs in towns sometimes don't work either. The same sign in the same town can work fine one time I look at it and then fail to work completely the next time. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure!
