Someone really needs to put the special skill descriptions and the skill levels needed to train them in a FAQ or something. They're useful enough that I keep them in a text file in my BoA folder. I think I might have a page from of one of those badly-saved threads, and been unable to send it on account of it being too large to send by email even when zipped. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

You speak a lot about logic, but logic is really no different from any other branch of science; a model used to make sense of observations. We believe that something can't exist and not exist at the same time because we never observe things doing so, and therefore assume we live in a world where that can't happen. Even in this universe, there are many different systems of logic favoured by different philosophical schools. Which one do you favour? Classical logic? Intuitionistic logic? Relevance logic? None is immune to criticism. The objective ones have counterintuitive aspects, and the intuitive ones rely on subjective assessments. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Yep, the scenario editor's the main draw. There are already several high-quality third-party scenarios available, and more will be coming very soon. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Two crossing beams? I only needed to aim one beam at him, going from north to south. I didn't know it was even possible to get two on him. EDIT: The beam has to hit the coordinates (12,20), if that information is of any value to you. By the way, Zauberer doesn't *actually* take damage from the beams, so don't panic if you don't see his health bar going down, but you should get animations, sounds and messages at the bottom of the screen at the start of every round. The beam *should* be hurting him. Make sure it's passing directly through him. Come to think of it, looking at the script, it actually checks for a specific point on the map, regardless of whether Zauby is located at that point. I'm pretty sure he doesn't move, but it's possible he appeared a space or two away from where he's supposed to. Try aiming the beam a little to the left or the right. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

In your view, why does morality need a deity? Is it simply as an enforcer of what would be morally good and evil independently of that deity's enforcement, or does the deity actually define what's good and what's evil? Is the act of enforcement itself an act of defining good and evil; that is, is administering unavoidable rewards and punishments actually equivalent to defining absolute standards of good and evil, or is something else involved? If it's the act of enforcement that defines good and evil as such, how is a deity different from any other sufficiently powerful tyrant? -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! The bit in the walkthrough you mention refers to a different dragon cave; there's another later on. If you have trouble escaping the dragons, just refuse to be sacrificed and fight your way out of the castle instead. Eventually, you end up in the same situation either way. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Hmm. Couple of things: Did you have BoA open with a party actually in the scenario while you were using the editor? That could potentially lead to misbehaviour. Is the scenario file (that is, slithhome.bas) locked, protected by access privileges, or otherwise uneditable? Can you make other edits and save without bad things happening? I don't think such a definition is possible either, but continued along that line of argument in order to rule out the possibility to the greatest extent possible. Are there any absolutists in this discussion at all, by the way? It's not going to make for much of an argument if we're all subjectivists. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Well, I'd say .cmg is more of a Jeff Vogel graphic format than a Mac graphic format. :P Seriously, though, the .cmg file is a bunch of graphics in a resource fork. As far as I can tell, editing resource forks on Windows is difficult at best, and even if you were able to extract the graphics you'd still have to convert them to a Windows-appropriate format yourself. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! quote:Surely a universally acceptable definition of "good" and "evil", if only we could agree on one, would amount to just that? Oh, and Alorael, you're confusing evolution with natural selection a little. Evolution itself doesn't imply an increase in fitness; fitness applies only to natural selection, a major mechanism (although not the only mechanism) by which evolutionary change occurs. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! 5 and 6 seem to essentially reduce morality to self-interest (with the sole addition that the benefit or harm comes in the form of rewards and punishments administered via an enforcer in order to reward or punish voluntary actions), which makes talking about good or evil at all instead of benefit and harm rather pointless, and makes the idea of a morality that applies equally to everyone rather arbitrary at best and absurd at worst.
