(As always for A1, I am stealing my information from Avernum Annotated Maps.) If you mean the door right after the bridge over the chasm in the first part of the Crypt of Drath, you need the Stone Key. You can get that from the area near Motrax (in the far northeast corner of Avernum). Ask Motrax about people who came around before you, and he'll eventually tell you that some of them wandered off and died nearby. Almost due east (but to get there, you have to go south, east, and then north), you can recover the key. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. (EDIT: Directed at Slith's comment) Not really. It would use much the same scripting engine, but the gameplay would be rather different. Creations vs. a party, real-time vs. turn-based, etc. The advantage that BoG would have is that the GF engine can handle more elaborate graphical changes — custom sfx of varying numbers of frames, for instance. Also, since it would be so similar (in terms of programming, at least) to BoA, there would be much less of a wait for people to learn to script. I think it would be kind of neat. Jeff said he'd consider it (in a thread that's either buried in BoA or BoA Editor or deleted). You can remove them (enter 0 as the second number) if you know the special item number of the Anama Ring, which I don't think anyone does offhand. Is there a list somewhere? Talking with Ahonar is a far better choice. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! About slith political systems.... In the two non-Darkling cities in Avernum, Gnass and Lost Bahssikava, there is a chief who seems to have all the political power. There's also a head priest, but we've never seen a situation of dissent or succession of any kind, so I don't think we have any basis for forming ideas of much more than that the chief is nominally the political leader who may or may not actually wield significant power. I have not analyzed the situations in the Darkling slith lands, but to the best of my knowledge, every town works more or less the same way: there is a chief (who is, incidentally, the strongest warrior, but does NOT use magic, signifying that he was never part of the priesthood) who is apparently in charge. Since Sss-Thsss's death caused a turn in the tide of the First Slith War (as opposed to the one in Za-Khazi), we may assume that the chief is intimately connected to military matters, which makes sense because he is the strongest warrior. Basically, then, the chief is the alpha male/female. (We have seen a female chief, haven't we? Have to check on that.) -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Lightning is normal. I think the lightning/sun difference may be a Mac/PC difference, although I can't imagine why. I always have lightning. You do not need any level of any skill to use a scroll. You do, however, need to be in combat mode to use most of them. That's my first guess as to what's wrong. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! Placed creatures start out as hostile, but creatures appearing from being hidden can be anything. If you want this creature to do something as soon as it appears rather than on the next turn, putting the text bubble in the creature's script is no good. I'd guess the best way to do this is to run that fairly elaborate check of the nearby squares. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I'm surprised I didn't notice this thread before. It is remarkably incoherent. First, I would really like to figure out exactly what it is that makes BoA thinks the save file is corrupt and resets skills back to 0. I think it's a certain trained value of a skill, possibly 100+, but I'm not entirely sure. I tried mucking around with this a little bit for the HLPM, but I didn't perform elaborate enough experiments. I think I'll do this at some point. Second, yes, at least make it an Invulnerability Exilir or something. An Invulnerability Potion is less effective than a Protection Brew. Third, we can only have four custom abilities. The fact that something can in theory be made into a custom ability is not a perfect solution for anything. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. quote:This isn't really true. Most colleges have their own method for calculating high school GPA (which is usually weighted) so they ignore whatever your high school thinks your GPA is and calculate it themselves. My high school used the newer method for calculating GPA, but my college used the older method, so you'll get different answers if you ask my high school and my college what my high school GPA was. But most colleges calculate a weighted GPA. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. The HLPM right now does what it's supposed to do: raise your party to the appropriate level and supply you with default items. That part works and will not change. If you want further updates for new nifty combat in the Arena or guidance for what level to choose from the Library, then yes, you'll have to download new versions periodically. But sometime — probably in a few months — I will release a new version of the HLPM. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Depends. If you're on a PC, no. If you're on a Mac, you can use the 3D Editor or the BetterEditor to do things like this. The 3D Editor has a way to scroll quickly, but I'm not sure about the BetterEditor — I don't really use it. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Silk-woven robe in Blades of Avernum | |

The difference is that it's an item ability, rather than a protection bonus — a subtlety that most people probably wouldn't care about. Specifically, the item ability does this: "Extra armor. Reduces damage from melee attacks by a dice of size equal to strength." The strength in this case is 3. So the silk-woven robe protects 1-3+1-3, whereas the other example would protect 1-5+2. Bottom line: poor chain mail is much, much better (although it encumbers — might want to save the silk-woven robe for your magic-users or something).
