I have to say, making a duplicate of A1's Lost Bahssikava in the BoA editor was tremendously instructive about town design. I didn't really get the concept of correct placement of walls until I did that. That said, re-creating one three-level dungeon is completely different from re-creating dozens of outdoor sections and towns. After a certain point, it could get extraordinarily tedious and probably would not be very useful to anyone. But I definitely did find it helpful to re-make LB. Take that as you will. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! Uh, did I miss this before? Rosy drinks socially? And therefore likely has somewhat impaired judgment when a handsome older man is rather friendly to her at a party? ... EDIT: In the interest of being remotely serious, I don't drink and don't know much about it other than it seems to make people stupid for a short period of time. I mean, I've been around it (college) but I don't really have much experience as I tend to stay away from frats and such. I have seen the devastating harm drinking can do, though, or at least some fraction of it -- you know they're too drunk when they're vomiting in the sink and not even in the toilet. Makes you worse at everything. It counts as decreasing your skills by 1 point for every point of Dread Curse that you have. If you want to know a healer who can get rid of it, name which Avernum game you're playing and we can tell you. (Generally Tower of Magi is a good place to look.) -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Uh, or you could respect the fact that you are far from the first newbie to these forums and are far from the first to have asked this exact question of the same people in the same words. Most recently, this topic was on the same issue. Asking a question like this deserves much the same response as a newbie asking, "I killed the Chief Spider in VoDT and now I can't beat the game! What do I do?" At any rate, read CSR. Read the top-rated scenarios and the bottom-rated scenarios. You'll figure out what the community likes and dislikes in a scenario. Basically, fun, plot, characters, dialogue, atmosphere, coding, terrain layout, custom graphics, and miscellaneous other things. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Fine. Fine! Sometime within the next couple of days. But that's my final offer. Or, alternatively, you could make the scenario, and I could test it and make sure everything works -- er, doesn't work -- in the right manner. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. If we have a little time on this one, I will try to make a utility scenario to demonstrate most of these. It shouldn't take too much time. But don't expect it done before next weekend. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. This. To put it simply, the plot comes first and the philosophy second. If I can't recognize that the scenario reflects reality in some way, there's no way in hell I'm going to be convinced by the argument the scenario makes. Okay, final update (I think). A few of the least likely calls as determined by myself, Garrison, and *i were stricken from the record (4.3, 4.4, 5.4, 7.5, 7.6, 7.7, 7.8, -- dealing with shop money, altering day length, and altering the rate at which creatures regenerate their health). I think this is the final edit, unless anyone has any strenuous objections. Now it's time for someone important that Jeff knows and to whom he might actually listen (*cough* Stareye *cough*) to send this in. EDIT: And Stareye sent it in. Now we'll just have to wait and see what he says. To the best of my knowledge, you don't. It's not that it's unlikely. It's just not going to happen. The chances are not slim, but in fact none. Jeff has said this repeatedly, most notably in a post that was deleted in the last prune here, but remains at the Lyceum here. EDIT: Any final requests? I think I'm going to make the last adjustments tomorrow, ask for any final comments that anyone would like to make, and then... err... something will happen on Sunday. Someone will, like, send it to Jeff or something. Hrm, this is fun. I happen to have my copy of Ender's Game handy this time. Here's the relevant section of the Intro: "(I)n writing Ender's Game I deliberately avoided all the little literary games and gimmicks that make 'fine' writing so impenetrable to the general audience. All the layers of meaning are there to be decoded, if you like to play the game of literary criticism — but if you don't care to play that game, that's fine with me. I designed Ender's Game to be as clear an accessible as any story of mine could possibly be. My goal was that the reader wouldn't have to be trained in literature or even in science fiction to receive the tale in its simplest, purest form. And, since a great many writers and critics have based their entire careers on the premise that anything that the general public can understand without mediation is worthless drivel, it is not surprising that they found my little novel to be despicable. If everybody came to agree that stories should be told this clearly, the professors of literature would be out of a job, and the writers of obscure, encoded fiction would be, not honored, but pitied for their impenetrability." The point here is that literature (and art in general, thus Blades scenarios) should function at minimum on this most basic level, and that if one feels like adding additional layers of meaning, great, but it had still damn well better make sense at the literal level. That's why the philoso-babble and allegory of NTH is such a turn-off; it interferes with the most basic aspects of the story. It doesn't interfere horribly, which is why the scenario is still quite good, but it is the main beef that I have with the scen. Personally, I almost hate to quote Orson Scott Card for this, because as a science fiction writer, he is not usually part of the accepted literary canon, but I think that he is not the only practitioner of this. I think the best examples of what he's talking about are the plays of Shakespeare. They are very intricate and complicated and probably have a great deal to say about the human experience, but Shakespeare never forgets that his characters are people, not qualities personified — he is not writing allegory. Perhaps closer to home (at least for TM) would be an Afterword by Nabokov to Lolita: "Teachers of Literature are apt to think up such problems as 'What is the author's purpose?' or still worse 'What is the guy trying to say?' Now, I happen to be the kind of author who in starting to work on a book has no other purpose than to get rid of that book and who, when asked to explain its origin and growth, has to rely on such ancient terms as Interreaction of Inspiration and Combination — which, I admit, sounds like a conjurer explaining one trick by performing another." Lolita isn't a statement of meaninglessness: it's a meaningless statement, at least according to Nabokov. It works because it's about a character who acts like a person and talks like a person and is recognizable as a person, and Nabokov does not push on us (Ayn Rand-style) some sort of philosophical point of view. That is, one does not have to believe a particular brand of philosophy in order to believe Lolita. However, Lolita may argue a particular brand of philosophy, but only by being convincingly realistic. The philosophy becomes believable by reflecting what the reader would recognize as reality. That's why one would argue philosophy in the form of a novel, not in the form of an essay. The medium dictates the rhetoric, to some extent. Not having played Corporeus, I can't say anything specific to it, but this is my general feeling about art and specifically writing. Periodically, people talk about how much worse these boards have gotten since the person was new here. I think this is more a product of the person's development individually than anything changing on these boards. I read back to a year and a half ago (or thereabouts) as part of the original Pied Piper Project, and nothing has changed. Except for a very brief and very dark period about a year ago, these boards remain relatively constant. THESE BOARDS ARE NOT DYING. THEY ARE THE SAME AS THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN. IDIOTS, FLAMES, AND ALL, THE SPIDERWEB BOARDS REMAIN THE SAME. ANY FEELING OF CHANGE IS MORE LIKELY THE RESULT OF YOUR OWN CHANGE THAN SPIDERWEB'S CHANGE. EDIT: Boldness because this is a manifesto, not because I'm angry or anything. Just so you know.
