quote:This is not even remotely true. The problem with most scenarios being this large is that they take an incredible amount of time to finish and almost no one ever does. Okay, quick reality check. A 7 by 7 outdoors... that's about the size of A1 or A2, as you know because you mentioned it. A2 -- which had the engine already in place from Nethergate and A1, and the plot and most of the terrain already in place from E2, so that all that remained was porting from Exile to Avernum -- took Jeff working FULL TIME something on the order of a year. Do you really have all of the towns drawn out? In a 7 by 7 outdoors, I'd expect about 100 or so towns. I somewhat believe that you have 75% of the outdoors done, but given that 75% of the outdoors would be about 35-40 sections, that's still less than a quarter of the drawing. And if you've pumped out 35-40 outdoor sections in the time since BoA was released, you've either been doing this since the game first came out, or your outdoors lacks detail. And then adding scripts is, er, hardly a trivial task after that. Scripts for 100+ towns could well take years -- that's on the order of 600 hours of work, which at full-time speed would take about four months. By all means, keep working on this scenario, but don't ever expect to finish it. An article by Alcritas, who would know. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! In response to this thread's title: yes, there is a walkthrough for VoDT. From the FAQ: Most titles are based on number of posts. 0 Apprentice 50 Journeyman 100 Citizen of Exile 250 Adept 500 Erudite 1000 Veteran 2000 Guru 3500 Frolicking in Postland 5000 Postmaster General 7500 Your Postliness Some have titles that Drakey felt like giving them (Djur's "Babelicious," for one). Canned is a title of punishment, and Banned indicates that one is, in fact, banned. Blademaster indicates that the member moderates that board. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Um, no. The cue "(You take note of this.)" indicates only that you have learned something that will affect your ability to do or say something else later on down the line (or, more technically, that an SDF is set). You are not actually required to note it in your journal, and in virtually all cases, one can repeat this message. The fact that it doesn't show up on a second or third repetition at all appears to be a glaring bug. And the fact that it repeats this on different computers indicates that it is probably not a corruption of any kind. One should be able to progress normally from this point despite the missing message, though. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Item List for BoA? in Blades of Avernum | |

It's called corescendata.txt. Specifically, in your BoA Files folder (if you're on a Mac -- BoA Data if PC), there is a text file called corescendata2.txt that lists all the items. If you're not terribly familiar with scripting, it can be a bit inaccessible, but if you just want the names, you can look at the line that says something like it_full_name = "Fish"; That will tell you the names. You can also open up the editor, make a new scenario, and use the menus that say I1, I2, etc to look at the list of items. You can even place them to see what they look like if you want. EDIT: Oh, um, Westra's Cookbook also lists default items. My scenario will be called Bahssikava. It's SO DARN CLOSE TO BEING DONE. I've made 20 towns, and I have two more to go. Virtually all of the writing is done; I just have to finish off the last part of the last dungeon and write the ending. Then some alpha testing, and I'll send out a beta call. I'm hoping to get that beta call out sometime this week, but who knows. School has really bogged me down, or else it would've happened two weeks ago. The scenario (if people aren't sick of the one-sentence plot summary by this point) is about sliths trying to get back to their homeland through Lost Bahssikava. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I had to look this up, because I had forgotten this part. When you ask, "May I see the message?", this text appears in the dialogue box: "'He left me a note saying he left me a message on the back of his dresser. I found the message but I can't understand it!' (You take note of this.) He shakes his head. 'The work goes slow without his help. I hope someone finds him soon.'" There definitely appears to be a bug here. I can only get this message once. At any rate, his room is the northern one in the east hall of that same building. The dresser has a note in it. You should be able to do exactly what Smirf described, I think. Is this the favorite aspect of Nethergate's engine? Because I would have to say iso-3D, in that case (because of course Nethergate was the first SW game to pioneer the look that JV has used for the Avernum Trilogy and basically for the Geneforge series, too). Heights are pretty nifty, and everything just looks nicer. As far as plot or whatever, I liked the land of the dead. I just loved that area, exploring and fighting and collecting 100+ skill points all at once. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. As far as I was concerned, the main issue was board stretching and general idiocy, not annoying dial-up users, which is sort of a tangential issue. Even DSL can load slowly with a bunch of images on the thread. But board stretching and stupidity are much worse than a short time delay as the thread loads. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Just a warning, Jack's Pants: you're pretty near banning right now. Asking for a registration code is an auto-ban offense, and you can very easily buy Spiderweb games internationally, so that is no excuse. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. It all depends on your axioms. If you assume that 0 = 1, proving that 1 = 2 is trivial. And more accurately, one should say that the limit of .999 repeating is equal to 1, not that .999 repeating is itself equal to 1. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. This sounds like much the same reasoning that I used with NK0P... :P One word of warning: don't talk too much about your scen before you release it. Some scenarios have become running jokes because of that (ask Drakey about RiB, or heck, me about NK1: Oalen). If you need help, of course ask questions, but otherwise keep the advertising and previewing to a minimum until it's at least in beta. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. To be perhaps somewhat more clear, in order to pass the green gates, you need an item called an "Opening Stone," not a special item called an "Opening Stone." I'm going to define "end of next week" as Saturday the 18th, unless anyone has any objections. Then I'll make the final edit to the first post in this thread, and... well... it would be nice if someone important (and here I am thinking of Stareye) would send this to Jeff at that point because I am a nobody and I have no idea if he would just ignore a random e-mail from me. Moderators of a board can click on that and find out a computer's IP address. If two members' IP addresses are the same, they're using the same computer (or possibly are on the same router or something). Also apparently one can find out the region that a member is from using this IP address, but that wasn't part of my moderator training. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. There are certain aspects of BoE that have been improved for BoA that may have you kicking yourself if you stick with BoE. However, if you like the Exile appearance and spell set better, much can be done with BoE and you can definitely make scenarios for it and people will play them. BoA has far more powerful a scripting system, which makes it somewhat harder to learn. Either way, really. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls!
