The mage was not successful, but he was indeed secsesful. He immediately suffered from secses overdose, seized, and went into renal and occipital lobe failure.

Back on Ermarian (or something), another mage appeared, closely followed by an empty set of gray robes. He was wearing a pointed hat that said "Wizzard." The robes somehow informed him, without speaking, that he was to represent Pratchett in the battle with Adams.

The wizard promptly started running.

Ermarian was named by committee in those forgotten days before Spiderweb had these forums.

—Alorael, who thinks Nye made AYBABTU a query perfectly correctly. "To whom are all your base belong" has one answer, and that's to Mao (to Mao, to Mao Zedong). Besides, what do AYBABTU and correct grammar have in common?

Something like that, and I use 'like' broadly here, would be in the code. However, that doesn't save someone from having to program the differences between Intel and Idiot.

—Alorael, who isn't sure there is a difference between Intel and an idiot. Oh, wait... Ignore that OS discrimination moment, please. It was all for the sake of a bad pun, really!

X, I have enjoyed some rave / house / techno, but not much. It's not so much a problem with the style as the fact that I just find most individual pieces of music unappealing.

—Alorael, who would call it the difference between noise and music, but since some people like that style it obviously is music. So he'll say he only likes music that sounds like music to him.

There are still people born with one cojone, and you can have a prosthesis to put in for cosmetic purposes. I imagine it's made of plastic or rubber or both, but I don't know.

—Alorael, who didn't care to inquire to deeply into the subject. However, he would doubt that monkey parts are used now. The chance of zoonotic disease is too high, and so is the chance of transplant rejection.

Desperance is a small target of the past. We're now poised to take over the entire internet. And then... the world! And then... I don't know! But we'll find something!

—Alorael, who does not have anything against Desperance, actually. You can't hold a website responsible for people. That doesn't necessarily mean the Despers, either.

I dislike most lyrics in music. Don't ask me why. This pretty much leaves me liking classical, some jazz, and very little otherwise.

—Alorael, who also has to admit that music that exists only to vent anger and noise irritates him more than any other kind of music. Expressions of anger are fine, but don't call them a kind of art they're not.

Of course you don't! It's not a good conscpiracy if just anyone can figure it out before it's too late.

—Alorael, who cannot say more, except that all your base will eventually belong to the conspiracy as well.

If you're using Windows NT, you need a special version of DirectX for Spiderweb games to work. Otherwise, I can't help you.

If you want to use that you'll also have to download the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6. The DirectX does not function properly without the Service Pack.

—Alorael, who otherwise can't help with Windows. More specific information, like more system information and what version of Windows, would also help.

Even if Jeff could get an existing company to help him out, I don't think he'd want to. He's made it very clear that he likes being able to keep his own schedule, make his games exactly the way he wants, and generally be his own boss in all things. He's lose that freedom if he joined a company, or even if he expanded Spiderweb.

—Alorael, who isn't sure he'd want to play "beefed up" Spiderweb games. They'd be more expensive, of course, and there would probably be important elements lost to making the games more pretty.

Thank you, Wise Man, for that very helpful comment. I'm sure that really made matters more settled. That's a warning for a belittling comment that came at the worst possible time.

Custer, you did show up and immediately start with insults. That's not a very good way to make friends here regardless of how many posts you have.

ADoS, sometimes you should let minor insults go. It's not worth pursuing them.

—Alorael, who believes this topic will only get worse. He'll just wait and watch to see how far it sinks before deciding whether a mercy killing is in order.

It's spelled teetotaler, and I agree. On the other hand, they miss out on the health benefits of red wine and now beer, which contains some other compound that reduces your risk of cancer, I believe.

—Alorael, who has seen kids in Europe drink watered-down wine more often than undiluted wine. But anyway, they don't drink it like soda, either. And they actually learn how to not get drunk in college quite often, unlike many Americans...

Enforced "goodness" -- a good thing? in Blades of Avernum

Remember that being evil doesn't necessarily mean you'll attract favorable attention from other evil people. There are plenty of villains in scenarios who aren't psychopathic serial killers, and a careful planner probably wouldn't want a mass-murdering undependable sidekick, no matter how loose his morals.

—Alorael, who would say that a scenario that enforces goodness isn't bad as long as it adequately handles evil. The ability to kill key NPC's with no repercussions can hurt a scenario, especially if you don't know the NPC is important until it's too late.

I ran an interesting test today, although it wasn't very detailed. I copied a folder containing 100k of Excel files on a Mac to a PC. Lo and behold, the folder began to take up 14.4 megs. Go figure.

—Alorael, who can't see how this is really relevant. It is interesting, though. The other numbers seem equally unequal when compares cross-platform.

Congratulations, Rosy! Have fun with your summer freedom and college studenthood.

—Alorael, who believes 96 is indeed a percent. Most American grades are given in percents and/or letter grades, and the latter are directly calculated from the former. A 96% is very good.

TM started it, and we just went along. I find the idea of drinking needles quite intriguing, personally... I think it might go well with skribbane on the imaginary beverage list.

I agree with a lot of the suggestions here, but there are a few more I can add...

Roger Zelazny: A lot of his books are similar to each other in many ways, but the Amber series is excellent and one other book should give you a taste of his odd immortality/godhood books. And for a different flavor, read Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming.

C. S. Friedman: All good books, although some suffer from completely unlikeable protagonists. The Coldfire books are the best in my opinion (Black Sun Rising, When True Night Falls, Crown of Shadows).

—Alorael, who believes the short story of Flowers for Algernon was written before the novel. It was so popular the author extended his work and changed the tone quite a bit in the process.

It's not a new trend in any case. There were Spiderweb-related forums, mainly for BoE, before Spiderweb opened the IB, and then there was an ezboard spree that died down without fanfare. The next generation of forums came from the fight between Desperance and the newly-created Polaris more than a year ago, and Lady J eventually hosted Polaris, Phoenix (now gone), Azure Palace (gone), and others. Wise Forums probably fit into that category.

—Alorael, who would say that most boards die because they don't have anything Spiderweb lacks. Desperance has its own people and ambience, Polaris has its conspiracies, and the Lyceum is THE place for BoE. Other than that, outside forums have a bad track record.

New weapon types? in Blades of Avernum

Hammers are melee. Flails don't appear, but I'd make them melee as well.

—Alorael, who actually wouldn't make flails at all unless there was a plot-related reason. The graphic problem with using them would be a bit odd.

Melee weapons take very different skills to use. In fact, even two different swords can have very different techniques. But that aside, there are a few weapons that don't fit neatly into any category. A very long whip, for example, isn't melee and it certainly isn't a polearm.

—Alorael, who has no problems with the weapon system. There are weapons, and you can hit things with them. How much more do you need? If your hunting salad bowl doesn't neatly fit any category, just put it in one and know that players will thank you for sparing them an extra skill to learn.
