That's what I said. Quality over quantity. The next bit was, in my own words, do as I say, not as I do. —Alorael, who doesn't think it's really possible to be a good member with one post. Valuable membership requires actual presence, which means more than one post. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Let's try to kep the insults down, shall we? [Edit: While we are occasionally disgusting, we are never ew.] —Alorael, who agrees with Logo on the value of quality over quantity. Yes, he believes it even holds true in his own case. As for TM, his guide is good for becoming a noteworthy and respected member. "Good" can be best achieved by not posting. As people get better connections, sites start putting up more images and other bandwidth-intensive things, which results in a need for faster connection speeds, in an endless cycle. Computer processors and programs show the same cycle. If the internet and modems evolve as fast as computers have, we'll all be using wireless, unbelievably fast connections that can be accessed anywhere in a few short years. —Alorael, who agrees that dialup's growing obsolescence is about as obvious and inevitable as the replacement of computers from 1990 with newer, better models made in the 21st century. Technology keeps improving, especially since that keeps money pouring in from customers. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Welcome back, RoR! Yes, TM was banned too. Other than SMoE, you two were the only casualties. —Alorael, who who thinks RP's would do better here if they had a bit more planning to begin with and appeared with a bit more time between beginnings. Just a thought, mind you... Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Bush isn't as stupid as he sometimes sounds when talking. On the other hand, his judgement surrounding the intelligence issues makes me question whether he really is even average in intelligence. Brushing off the issue is not appropriate. Then again, neither was saying "Bring it on!" to the Iraqis who are still fighting. —Alorael, who would say that the Democrats are a good moderate party right now. No uncomfortable extreme decisions from them right now. In fact, it looks like they're making no decisions at all. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Nothing makes up for knowing the right spells to cast. I've never seen anything run out of magic in any Spiderweb game, but I've outlasted a few of Avernum's archers. —Alorael, who expects scripted BoA behaviors to reult in at least a few intelligent casters. Even apprentice mages could be dangerous if they were smart enough to use decent spells. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

For a real suggestion, I'd advise David Ive's one-act play Sure Thing. It has a lot of lines and only two actors, though, so if you're short on time or skilled memorizers then I'd skip it. —Alorael, who is a fan of Psychoanalysis and The Bible as well. Both of them are a bit politically incorrect, though, and he can't remember the playwright(s) name(s). With titles like those, you can't really Google them. For that matter, define intelligence. If you consider non-sapient animals as well, then almost every single human ever to live has been above average in intelligence. —Alorael, who would say that many of the most intelligent people he knows are actually well below the intelligence to body mass ratio. Does that mean that the ascetics are smarter proportionally? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

A dose of reality: Africa had had its empires, but they had fallen... and been replaced by new kingdoms. Africa had its own munitions factories, even. When it was colonized by European powers, it was entirely for the good of the occupiers. The period of occupation set African culture and technology back centuries and created new country boundaries without any regard to existing borders, which is part of the reason there are so many African civil wars today. Asia likewise had its own nations and cultures. They were obliterated less completely, mainly because Asians were just seen as barbarians, not subhuman. —Alorael, who doesn't think the colonists brought democracy, either. And while they did bring Christianity, they were a few hundred centuries behind the Ethiopian church and other Christian sects in Africa. Maybe civilization is a good thing, but civilization was not even a secondary goal of colonization. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Who: He or she chooses to remain anonymous at this time. What: Far, far too many of these things. You know what I mean, I'm sure. Where: So close, and yet so far. When: It's all a matter of distance anyway. Why: In a cosmic sense, because someone had far too much time on his or her hand or hands. Or maybe distance. —Alorael, who isn't sure what he has accomplished with this post. Well, the analysis of his psyche will be left to others more qualified. I remember certain images going beyond that, but maybe that was a different topic. Scorp does love his images. It doesn't matter anyway, now. —Alorael, who will now drop this line of conversation. TM and RoR were both just a bit too nasty in too short a period of time. —Alorael, who doesn't think what SMoE did was so terrible, actually. It was bad, but Scorp and Imban had a lovely postathon of images of dubious content and were punished with absolutely nothing. Spiderweb has a problem with balancing punishments. Some major choices are good, but it's nearly impossible to make a scenario that will account for every choice a player might make. Rather than having a frustrating open-ended scenario where most actions have no effects, I'd rather have only a few options that are very obviously turning points, at least in retrospect. —Alorael, who would say nothing is less entertaining than the ultimate open-ended scenario, better known as the scenario with no plot. Each action you take is as important as any other action you might take, but none are significant at all! Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

New spells: requires additional programming to allow space for it, graphics to handle it, ways for designers to make them, etc. And they wouldn't be transferrable between scenarios anyway. Special spells, already used in BoE, should suffice in most cases. NPC's: I don't know what Jeff is thinking either. Oh well. New classes: Why? The only time class matters is in the very beginning, and most experiences players use custom anyway. Avernum is not class-based. New races: Races have only minimal effect, couldn't be transferred, and would require quite a bit of coding. There are easier ways to handle most aspects of race. —Alorael, who would bet a lot of money that BoA scenarios require BoA to run. Jeff wants to turn a profit, the Avernum games aren't set up for it, and BoE was like that. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
