Getting to King Micah without the Royal token. in The Avernum Trilogy | |

I always thought about that path after gaining the Royal Token and seeing Micah. After all, once in his chambers, I started to wonder where the other doors would lead, and whether they were locked. But I always assumed that there was a special enounter near the door next to the royal guard to prevent the player from entering that area without the Royal Token. Too bad there is not much to gain from seeing the king this early. I guess it saves you from the necessity of going to Formello, though. Did the thought of satisfying both goals ever occur to him? He could have made the game drop the item under the character when the item is clicked outside of the selectable regions. Removing the ability to place the items around the characters also removes a few options from the game! -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. Well, I am confused. The reason is the lack of reason in any of the previous proceedings. I personally think this was all a planned attempt by Magi to add some commotion to the boards, which have slowed down a bit in the past months. Good show, I would have to say. -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. There are 2 likely reasons for this. (1) You do not have enough mechanics skill, or the proper special item to unlock the cabinet. In this case, unless something is wrong with your game, a little message should pop up in the text window telling you how many living tools will be needed. (2) The cabinet is not unlocked and simply does not have anything in it. Also check to make sure you are actually clicking on the cabinet and not some space next to it. I do not think you actually did this, though. -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. He probably spends too much time closely examining burning fires or charcoals, since his dialogue face is so black in Exile 3. Or perhaps his potions explode into his face too much. -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. If the call worked any other way, I guess it would yield strange generic monsters with "?" graphics. But they would have the appropriate number of limbs and shading according to species, of course. In case you are wondering, you never really have to refer to the town number of the items you place. Species is checked only in the calls that specifically say "species." A placed monster's ID is only useful with NPCs that join the party. No, there are no calls that check for specific item types on a given location (the items can only be referred to by their special class in this case). -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. The type is not the species, but the number that represents exactly what creature the party will encounter. For example, by default, creature type 1 is "Merchant" and type 3 is "Beggar." I do not think Jeff officiated a formal terminology for distinguishing the many similar terms used when referring to data in the game, but it all usually make sense. A simple test should answer questions like these. Remember that for monsters, you sometimes have to supply their ID, creature type, creature number of the town, or their species, so try to keep everything clear in your mind. -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. That is what you believe "true capitalism" to be? I find it odd to imagine a large society that is purely governed by their own economy, even in some fantasy land. I am also amused at the thought of shooting someone is bad primarily because it reduces the number of people in an economy, though. -------------------- What do I put here? -Garrison Posts: 1415 | Registered: Thursday, March 27 2003 08:00 |

If your still art graphics program is completely compatible with .GIF, then the graphics saved in that format should be lossless. Unless you are using more than 256 colors in a single small Avernum sprite  . I do not think this will make very much sense, but you could give the characters an ability that gives them an item that targets. The item would have 1 charge and would disappear after 1 use, and the party would not be able to have more than 1 at any time. This is an ugly workaround, but it will make whatever you are planning possible. And the item's custom script should check for the party having more than 1 of itself as well, since the player can drop items on the ground, and escape item checks... Athron is a female dragon in Avernum, but I remember at least several instances where she is referred to as a "he." Since I have never played Exile, I cannot confirm Athron's original gender, but I suspect the gender-switching is one of those amusing artifacts from conversion. As for X, everyone refers to him as, well, "him." The dialogue picture looks masculine, too. But when gender is unspecified, the masculine form is the default. Since he does not really talk about himself much (except to boast), I do not think we can ever really find out. -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. Assuming Jeff uses the standard Software EULA, any sort of reverse engineering, direct manipulation of the game code, or of the memory used by the game is forbidden. But since big companies cannot stop constant piracy, I do not think Jeff even cares (as long as you do not distribute it too publicly). But there have been some utilites that do those things, and are even announced on these message boards. Mainly, Jeff does not care about it as long as you are not affecting his income. A bit testy today? I should be, considering I have been trying to speak formal English for the past two days now. Going back to the original topic, the best audio codec for a slow connection would be one that is the most compressed, and of the least quality. I doubt that any voice-communication software would use slow codecs, such as the kind used for digital audio archiving (Download Monkey!), but if your computer is slow, you will either have to find more information or just test out all of them. The menus should not be that confusing. When you refer to the 'proxy' menu, does that mean you are selecting something related to the proxy? Are you running behind one for protection? If not, then you might not need to do anything there. But maybe it has to do with connecting properly with others with proxies. I have not downloaded the software, but I might try tomorrow. -------------------- What do I put here? -Garrison Posts: 1415 | Registered: Thursday, March 27 2003 08:00 |

Apple computers are so cool. Without Apple, I can only imagine how long it would have taken the major computer players to have developed a home computer. Every large network I have seen that uses Apple computers works with very few errors when using applications. File sharing and drive clusters work, and the administrators do not need to employ crazy lockdown programs and disable everything to secure the network. With lots of security modifications, a physcial and software based firewall, updated anti-virus programs, and many features of Windows disabled, a Microsoft network can usually function without becoming infected by viruses or destroyed. But then again, everything will cause error messages about permissions and everything runs so slowly. As for Linux, I have a quick question for anyone who might know. Can any of you point me to a boot disk with standard utilities (specifically sfdisk) that uses the 2.6 kernel? I am going to ask in a real tech forum soon, but I need to register first... -------------------- What do I put here? -Garrison Posts: 1415 | Registered: Thursday, March 27 2003 08:00 |

Halloween was not originally meant to be changed into this ghoulish children's holiday. The atmosphere of reverence and 'spookiness' was acceptable, I guess. Mexico's Dia de los Muertos comes around at the same time as Halloween. The celebrations there are a little more somber, but decidedly festivities for the young ones. -------------------- What do I put here? -Garrison Posts: 1415 | Registered: Thursday, March 27 2003 08:00 |

It is a work in progress, so I am sure you will eventually shade (or texture if you want to be detailed) the background trees. The left side does seem a tad bare, but adding a trunk would might make the picture have too many trees. Maybe just branches coming in from the left would be sufficient. My attention is drawn by the knothole in the foreground mid-right tree. It looks a little unnatural, but you could make the edges of the knothole converge vertically, similar to the way it was done in one of the left background trees.
