NOTE: You need either good lockpicks and tool skill, or the unlock mage spell.

Im starting my own walthrough of the Avernum series, I have played all the axile games, and the 1st 2 Avernum games. iv been reading lodsa walkthrus, hints, etc. and all of them say you HAVE to have a royal token to see King Micah. This is not true. Recently, replaying thru Avernum 1, with a party a matter of hours old, having only reached level 2 or so having only done the Bandit fort and Nephil cave, i easily managed to see the King without going to the trouble of getting a royal token in Formello, here's how:

When you reach the room outside the throne room(the one with the pool and 1 royal guard in it, go thru the doors 2 the South and in2 the rum wiv a long table a several bookshelves. unlock or pik the lok of the door on the Western side, and you should find yourself in the King's personal chambers, from there, unlock the Northern door and go thru in2 the throne room. Then go and speak with King Micah.

I always thought about that path after gaining the Royal Token and seeing Micah. After all, once in his chambers, I started to wonder where the other doors would lead, and whether they were locked.

But I always assumed that there was a special enounter near the door next to the royal guard to prevent the player from entering that area without the Royal Token.

Too bad there is not much to gain from seeing the king this early. I guess it saves you from the necessity of going to Formello, though.

There's another way to do it.

Kill Sss-Thsss. His head works as your Royal Token. :D

One thing: if you write a walkthrough for any game, make sure you proofread it for spelling and grammar. If you write a walkthrough in the same manner as you wrote that post, no one will want to read it.

It took me a while to understand what Magic Man was saying.

Other than that, interesting. I've never tried that. I'll have to go see if it really works.

I didn't think you could pick any of the locks in that area so early in the game. Wierd.

Well, I maxed out my lockpicking skill when I gained a level with 1 of my 2 characters, and i brought some fine lockpicks with my reward cash from the bandit fort, and Nephil fort.

"But I always assumed there was a special enounter near the door next to the royal guard to prevent the player from entering that area without the Royal Token."

There aren't, just get some good lockpicks and tool skill or the unlock spell, both work, Ive tried with both of them.

If you did kill Sss-Thsss, then you've probably already got a royal token.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind.

"I didn't think you could pick any of the locks in that area so early in the game. Wierd."

Just use the unlock spell then, if you created a custom character, it's not too hard.

I can't stand locked doors, so I found all this out early on in the game

I didn't my first time. I couldn't figure out at first how to get in, and didn't want to walk to Formello. At this point my party was fairly ripped, so I went in and beat them down. His head was a great Royal Token.

Pile on the Mage Skill early on. It helps.

Why bother going to the king with no token? Finish the mission at the Nephil fort to get the token. Not only does it give you valuable experience, but it also gives you the loot from the kitties.

Well, no one is saying that this new proposed path through the game is favorable to the intended, original one. But it is something interesting to try, and everyone loves poking holes in the logic and consistency of games and stories.

Not visiting Formello is an oddity, though. There are many things to do there, not to mention quests and such. As a side note, I find little use for Tool Use above 8 points of it at level 25.

I did this by accident the first time I went to the castle. I had the Token and all, but took a clockwise route when exploring the place rather than an anti-clockwise route.

Thus, I was kicking down doors (sounds so much better than picking locks or casting unlock doors) just wondering where it all led and stumbled into the throne room ("Whoah! What's this doing here" I thought to myself - stuck on the back of some tiny bedroom or whatever). Had a bit of a rap with the king and then walked out. At this point the guard asked me for my Token. It was pretty funny really - talk about closing the barn door after the horse has bolted.

I've done it a few other times where you go into an area the back way and then when you go out the front it gives you the pre-programmed "entry" text or whatever. In one case it was after I slaughtered all the occupants of the room - it made the description rather amusing that time as well (can't remember the details).

Maybe its because I'm left-handed and don't explore the right way...

And maybe that's also the reason I have to edit this post twice to get it gramatically correct.
