Yeh, like Alooloolol said, most boats on the surface are found in places like the slime pit(to get to one of the slime pools).

The Rakshasi are impossible to beat down with spells, so use blessed/hasted/beserk fighters.
For the drakes, lighting spray is probably your best bet, or arcane lore.
For the gazer, use either arcane lore, divine fire, or fireblast.
And for the Wyrm, lightning spray/ice lances/arcane lore.
If your fighters are powerful enough though, I'd use them blessed, hasted, beserk, etc. instead of spells.

Well, I maxed out my lockpicking skill when I gained a level with 1 of my 2 characters, and i brought some fine lockpicks with my reward cash from the bandit fort, and Nephil fort.

"But I always assumed there was a special enounter near the door next to the royal guard to prevent the player from entering that area without the Royal Token."

There aren't, just get some good lockpicks and tool skill or the unlock spell, both work, Ive tried with both of them.

If you did kill Sss-Thsss, then you've probably already got a royal token.

"One thing: if you write a walkthrough for any game, make sure you proofread it for spelling and grammar. If you write a walkthrough in the same manner as you wrote that post, no one will want to read it."

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind.

"I didn't think you could pick any of the locks in that area so early in the game. Wierd."

Just use the unlock spell then, if you created a custom character, it's not too hard.

NOTE: You need either good lockpicks and tool skill, or the unlock mage spell.

Im starting my own walthrough of the Avernum series, I have played all the axile games, and the 1st 2 Avernum games. iv been reading lodsa walkthrus, hints, etc. and all of them say you HAVE to have a royal token to see King Micah. This is not true. Recently, replaying thru Avernum 1, with a party a matter of hours old, having only reached level 2 or so having only done the Bandit fort and Nephil cave, i easily managed to see the King without going to the trouble of getting a royal token in Formello, here's how:

When you reach the room outside the throne room(the one with the pool and 1 royal guard in it, go thru the doors 2 the South and in2 the rum wiv a long table a several bookshelves. unlock or pik the lok of the door on the Western side, and you should find yourself in the King's personal chambers, from there, unlock the Northern door and go thru in2 the throne room. Then go and speak with King Micah.
