In the description of my sword, it says, "plus 1-5 points [damage] per level of strength and melee weapons".

Does this mean plus 1-5 points per level of strength, plus 1-5 points per level of melee weapons or plus 1-5 per level of both strength AND melee weapons?

For example, if I have strenght 8 and melee weapons 5 is my bonus

(1 to 5)*8 + (1 to 5)*5

or

(1 to 5)*5

I hope this is clear...

I've always wondered how that works.

I think it means 1-5 damage + strength level + dexterity level.

And having like a "Ring of Strength" or "Orgish Gauntlets" on affects that too.

It's one bonus level per level of strength plus one bonus level per level of melee weapons. So in your example, (1-5)*8+(1-5)*5.

Hmm... wouldn't it be (1 - 5) for each? Meaning, a random number 13 times, not a random number once, times 13?

I'm pretty sure the game generates 13 numbers from 1 to 5 in the case of your example. It may not be the most efficient way to do things, but then again, not much is going on at once anyway.

It would be, but since the poster was apparently not familiar with dice notation I didn't want to confuse the issue.

I hate this, but the BoA Editor docs do clear things up a bit. Unfortuantely, I don't have them with me, so I can't quote.

Also, why didn't Jeff stick with the damage's used in Exile/Av1?

Because BoA is based off of Avernum 3, which uses a different engine than A1 and A2.

Here is the relevant paragraph from the editor:

"it_damage_per_level (Defaults to 0) - Only important for weapons. The size of the die of damage
the weapon does. A blow with a weapon does a number of dice of damage equal to the attacker’s
strength plus the skill in the weapon plus the bonus.
it_bonus (Defaults to 0) - For weapons, the number of extra levels of skill the wielder is given. For
armor, the number of extra points of damage it absorbs."

So, for a sword that is 1-5 + 1-5, wielded by a character of strength 8 and melee weapons 6 the damage will be:

(8 + 6 + 1d5)d5

Am I right?

... which according to my calculations should give an average damage of 51.

I'm pretty sure it's 1d5 + (8+6)d5, for an average damage of 45.

This is why the Baltimore Imperial is so incredibly giverous.

(And also, I suppose, the Blessed Claymore at high levels.)

To clarify:

it_damage_per_level gives the size of dice used for that weapon.
it_bonus gives the number of extra die

Damage = (1 + Strength + Relevant Skill + it_bonus)d(it_damage_per_level)

I'm not sure if someone mentioned this, but I think its per plain level. But strength and melee weapons will still increase it.

Experiment by giving a dagger to a level 50 mage.

Probably been said before, but it's like this:

For a longsword (1-5 + 1-5/level):

1d5 + (MW + STR)d5 = DMG
