Ooh, I hate cold, dry weather. The dryness accentuates the cold for me.

We've just had the exact same thing as Zeviz. I had a warm weekend and a lousy Monday. So of course, I spent the weekend indoors trying to download an engine that would revive some of my old childhood games. I guess weather doesn't much affect what I do all day.

On the drive home, I asked my parents if it had snowed in Portland. "Probably not," they said, as we took the boulevard to our house. But it had, and it continued to snow and hail sporadically the rest of spring break. We used to hit the 70s in spring break! *snif*

We still have snow on the ground, despite the 60 degree weather today. First day in 5 that it didn't snow/hail/sleet though. Sorry about your spring break, I saw pics on the news showing the coast. How was the highway over the coast range?

We followed the Columbia home because we were certain it had snowed in the pass.

Of course, there are people who take risk and hardship in stride. They may be the ones who do crazy stunts (like this) because they've accepted that risks exist. I think most of those "Xtreme sport"-type people are very content with life and mentally sound.

And while depression among those not subject to tragedy is sad, "change your attitude" or "others have it worse" without any qualifiers are generally unhelpful because the former asks the impossible out of people and depression is based off of a sincerely-held, committed belief that one's situation actually is bad.
I don't think it's impossible to change your attitude, nor to cause someone else to do so. The problem is that while depressed people may have the ability to make light of their lives, they may not take brief, equivocal advice like that when they are probably already skeptical about their situation and about other people.

And if depression, as you say, stems from an idea that you have it bad, why does that make it unhelpful to put life in perspective for a depressed person? With time, couldn't this help them count their blessings? When I feel upset about an internal problem or a difficult change, I always try to think that someone else is dying or starving or something. Not that that makes me happy, but I can put my self-pity aside.

This is all based on observations of a friend I have who was depressed, almost suicidally, a few years ago. He's doing great now.

I just had a mental flash of your résumé/business card:

Arancaytar Belyen: Extensive YouTube Peruser

Anyway, I'm not too familiar with Facebook, but maybe instead of "writing" on someone's "wall," the pet pages would allow you to "pee" on them?

Just call me the weird idea machine. And an inconsistent spammer. And an I need to get more sleep at night.

Yes, Aran SO resembles Ed.

I, too, don't really play the games. BoA doesn't work well on this shiny new Mac (maybe I should set up my old one and play it). Geneforges are okay, but I only ever finished the first because I can't do ultra-long gaming sessions and screwed up some games on the others. Exile/Avernum/Nethergate sound fun, but I didn't buy all of them because it would pretty much be my parents' money and I don't want to up and make them spend fifty dollars on game crap.

So, I think it's really fun to have conversations with interesting, insightful people. I can read the responses over and over and use a quote function to bring up dead concepts without looking that awkward. And the things people write to each other are enjoyable in that typical conversation way. I don't even click on the game forums. It still hooks me.

I just hope this onslaught of new members isn't so pigheaded that I'm driven off. So far, they've done okay.
