I suspect that trying to rescue endangered species by cloning would lead to fairly disappointing results. In general, by the time a species becomes critically endangered (only a few hundred or thousand left in the wild), its population is heavily inbred, severely lacking in genetic diversity, and prone to both hereditary and acquired diseases. In the long term, such a population has a poor chance of surviving in the wild, and raising population size through cloning may only make matters worse by increasing competition for limited habitat space and food supplies. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! The trouble with Ur-Basilisks is that it costs more than twice as many SP to Simulacrum them. In general, I'd rather summon two Basilisks than one Ur-Basilisk, and the former would cost me less SP. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! In case Kelandon's reply did not make it horribly obvious already, he was being sarcastic. (Mind you, I've heard similar views expressed seriously. A nice old lady who lives down the street from me was once asked to take part in a vox pop poll on what should be done with surplus embryos from IVF procedures. Her response? "I think they're unnatural and we should destroy them all".) -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

quote:What you have to do is give it Mage Spells skill if it's a mage, or Priest Spells skill if it's a priest. For example, to make a mage which can cast all mage spells up to level 8, include the following lines: The reason for the number 11 is that Mage Spells is skill number 11. You can find this out from the Appendices. To make a priest that can cast all priest spells up to level 15, include the following lines: Again, the 12 is because Priest Spells is skill number 12. Now, if you want to make a monster that can cast mage spells up to level 8 *and* priest spells up to level 15, you can use two different stat adjusts, like so: Each monster can have up to 4 different statistics adjusted in this way, by the way. Just follow the pattern above, with cr_what_stat_adjust 3 and so on. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Yes, you still have to pay to register the Exile games. Spiderweb Software hasn't stopped selling them, and, judging by what Jeff's said in the past, customers haven't stopped buying them. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! No. The Exile games are still shareware, and you still have to pay for them if you want to legally acquire the full version. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

The problem with .avi is that it isn't really a format as such; two .avi movies can be in completely different formats, and sometimes those formats are nonstandard or otherwise peculiar. All I can really recommend is that you download as many different media players as possible, and if a particular file doesn't work in one of them, try it in the others. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! chicho, please don't feel as if older members are trying to belittle those with fewer posts; they're just celebrating their own membership. Celebrating one's 40th birthday isn't meant as an insult to people under 40, is it? Everyone else, uh, please don't spam. This topic isn't very good and has the potential to get a lot worse, so I'm closing it now. quote:Read a few Republican or libertarian blogs and you'll come across it soon enough. Actually, just googling the phrase "a republic, not a democracy" produces a fair number of interesting results along the appropriate lines. Some of them seem really weird, but that's kind of the point. Note that by no means do I claim that such views are predominant among Republicans (they hardly could be, since most people who vote for mainstream political parties haven't thought about the issues deeply enough to encounter such ideas). However, they do represent a significant conservative viewpoint. [ Friday, August 05, 2005 05:03: Message edited by: Thuryl ] -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! quote:Well, it's not what I mean; it's a view that I've commonly seen among Republicans. Essentially, the argument is that the American government is not and never was meant to represent the views of the people -- that elections are simply a way of making sure that bad governments are removed from power, and the fact that they favour governments that promise to do what the people want them to do is merely an unfortunate side effect. These are the kind of people who say "America is a republic, not a democracy, and it's a good thing that's the case". Some basically regard "democracy" and "mob rule" as synonymous. I'd probably better leave it to someone who actually supports this argument to explain it, because I don't think I'm doing a very good job of it. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Kelandon, there's no need to repeatedly reply to tell us all why you're not replying. If you can't say anything nice... quote:Not that it's a view that I personally endorse, but there are plenty of people who'd say that too much democracy can be just as bad as too little; that it's neither necessary nor desirable for a government to be completely democratic. I think that was partly deliberate; FH's designer was more or less explicitly trying to create a believable universe rather than just a setting for a plot, and as such it wasn't necessary for everything to fit neatly into everything else. I believe the story actually started out as a novel; unfortunately, although I've read the novel, I remember little enough of it that I can't venture an opinion on whether it all held together better in that form. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Food for thought: to those of you saying that Bush shouldn't have prayed before his speech, what do you actually mean? Simply that it was inappropriate for him to do so and he should have known that, or that it should actually be illegal for him to do so? If the latter, what penalty do you consider appropriate for such an action? -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |
