What is the name of the Avernum world? in The Avernum Trilogy

The Exile series refers to the native language of humans as being English a couple of times as well (a note in the nephil fort in E1 and an obelisk in Vahnatai lands in E2). Don't know if this was fixed/changed for the Avernums.

Well, on a Mac, you can just press Command-H to instantly hide the application. This works on every Mac OS X native SW game (i.e. all the recent ones), although Geneforge 3 sometimes takes a couple of Cmd-H presses before it notices.

Some SW games can be played in a window, at least on a Mac (not sure whether or not there's an equivalent option for Windows; there may be). In BoA, you can disable the "Blades of Avernum takes up full screen" preference option to make it run in a window. I imagine there's a similar option for the series Avernums, although I don't have a copy of any of them immediately available.

It's my understanding that Jeff Vogel has a peculiar arrangement with his webhost, involving unlimited bandwidth but limited server space. Jeff can't renegotiate the deal because the host doesn't offer unlimited bandwidth to new customers any more, and he really needs unlimited bandwidth.

Also, if storage is that limited here, why shouldn't it be set up to just roll off the oldest posts perpetually like Usenet?
If I had to guess, I'd say it was because UBB was too brain-damaged to delete old posts automatically. Can you tell that we don't particularly like UBB here? :P

I'm in the north area from the Steel Door fortress, the one with all the golems along the pathway up the hill by the river, then down the west side with the golem factory rooms. I came to the bottom area in the SW corner, but the gates back to the N on the west side of the map are closed. I'm sure it's something simple I missed somewhere, but what opens those gates? I looked at the hints and it didn't appear to mention this.It just says continue north through the gates.
There's a wheel in a building just to the east. Turn it.

UBB is a huge disk space hog, and there's a lot of HTML code associated with each post in a topic. Disk space for these forums is always tight (there have been two mass purges of old posts already), so it's better to keep related stuff in a single post when it's reasonable to do so. There are exceptions to the no-double-posting rule if you intend to bump a topic or are replying to separate posts from different people in the same topic.

I kind of suspect that all of the advice people give about not double posting takes up more space in total than the double posts themselves, but oh well.

The exception is the DEAD_STATE, which does work properly. Everything else in the custom creature script, though, seems to be ignored.

Ah. Well, if we're just talking tile-based graphics with bigger and better tiles, then maybe we have some common ground. The thing that worries me most about graphical changes is that major graphical overhauls like, say, switching to a first-person perspective, also tend to involve changes in gameplay, and the current trend of realtime gameplay in RPGs makes me break out in hives.

I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting when I saw this topic, but this wasn't it.

You know, the song actually sounds better in the original Russian. At least, it would if I could listen to it without giggling.

A bit of a twist on the formula today. Today's name, Puerperal Fever, isn't a treatment but a disease -- a disease mostly caused by doctors. It's a highly dangerous infection which occurred in many women who gave birth in hospitals in the 19th century.

A physician named Ignaz Semmelweis suggested that maybe fewer women would be infected if doctors would wash their hands after performing autopsies and before delivering babies. This suggestion drastically reduced the death rate from puerperal fever in his ward, but also made him very unpopular among his colleagues, who thought his ideas were ridiculous and didn't like being told what to do. Semmelweis was ostracised from the medical establishment and ended his days in an asylum. Today, of course, doctors routinely wash their hands before and after treating patients -- at least, most of the time.

Well, yes, practically anything can kill you if you take enough of it -- some antibiotics are almost harmless even in massive doses, but that's the exception rather than the rule. It's when things frequently kill people even when used at therapeutic doses that you start to worry. :P

Question about Magic Levels in BoA in Blades of Avernum
...b10010b...
Member # 869

The documentation provides a description of how most spells increase with skill level. For example, Bolt of Fire does damage equal to 2-8 * skill + B. So at level 1 it does 2-8 damage plus bonus, at level 2 it does 4-16 plus bonus, at level 3 it does 6-24 plus bonus, and so on ad infinitum.

Today's name, Hemlock, is a plant that falls into the category of medicines which, while quite possibly effective, are somewhat less than safe. The ancient Greeks used hemlock to treat the pain of arthritis. They also used it, in only moderately higher doses, to execute people. Go figure.

Remember those big, light grey boulders you saw in a few places in Canopy? Those were mithril ore. You had to stand next to them and look at them to get them.

(By the way, my normal displayed name is Thuryl, not Blistering. At the moment I'm changing my name once a day until the end of the month to celebrate my 5000th post.)

A few SW community members and former community members are working on a project called Pygmalion. It's an RPG scenario design system which, once completed, will address many of your concerns regarding weapons and spells.

Being as I'm effectively the chief gameplay designer, I'm attempting to give the game the best of both worlds as regards variety and balance; over 100 different types of weapon and spell, with spells divided into 3 realms and 12 sub-realms. There's very little overlap between different realms of magic; Vital Magic includes spells, both helpful and harmful, which are for the most part only effective on living creatures, Energetic Magic consists mostly of various kinds of direct-damage spell, and Physical Magic is a motley assortment of summoning spells, utility spells, item-crafting abilities and status effects. Characters can specialise in one realm, dabble in all three, or go without magic entirely and try to get by on whatever magical items they find.

You can find out more at the Pygmalion forum at Desperance:

http://forums.desperance.net/viewforum.php?id=9

The magic system, my magnum opus at the moment, can be found in this thread. The weapon system is still under construction; a first draft can be found here.

I don't think we're actually disagreeing about much. Your opinion of Canopy seems similar to that of most of the community; good ideas, wrong implementation. The wrongness of the implementation just seems to bother you more than it does us, probably because after several years of BoE we've seen some really awful scenarios, and Canopy is so much better by comparison. :P

Today's name, Blistering, is another of those wonderful Victorian-era treatments based on the premise that everyone would be in perfect health if only it weren't for all those annoying bodily fluids. Blisters were raised on a patient's skin using either hot compresses or chemical irritants. Since this was in a time before antibiotics, infections were a common cause of serious complications in this procedure.
