quote:Lots of people think this, and I've no idea why. "Slaughtered to a man" is a perfectly good English idiom for "completely slaughtered". Today's name, Strychnine, is a powerful poison that acts by overstimulating nerves. Because of this method of action, it was once popular in tonics. These tonics probably did have some beneficial effects on concentration and alertness, but fatal overdoses were all too common. Nowadays, strychnine is still available in some places as a rat poison, but it's not intended for human consumption. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! There's no officially supported way to add character graphics. You can mess around with the game's graphics if you really want; how to do this depends on whether you're using the Mac or Windows version of the game, and we take no responsibility if anything goes horribly wrong. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! If you have an invulnerability potion saved up, you can win that fight really easily by overloading the generator (don't try this if you're not invulnerable, or you'll die). If you have a wand left with a couple of charges, it's pretty easy too. I've beaten the scenario with a no-magic fighter, so it's not as if it can't be done. If all else fails, lower the difficulty level in the Preferences. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Today's name, Phrenology, is more a matter of bad psychology than bad medicine, but I think it still counts. Phrenology was practiced by the ancient Greeks and experienced a resurgence of popularity in the 19th century (what is it with the 19th century, anyway?) Phrenology was a method of assessing personality traits by measuring the shape of the head, the idea being that bumps on the surface of the head reflect bumps on the outer skull, which reflect enlarged regions of the brain, which correspond to personality traits and mental abilities. Well, there were a few problems with this idea. Firstly, bumps on the surface of the head don't correspond to bumps on the skull. Secondly, bumps on the skull don't correspond to enlarged regions of the brain. Thirdly, enlarged regions of the brain don't correspond to personality traits and mental abilities in anything like the way phrenologists thought they did. Three strikes and phrenology was out. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

In Geneforge 1, the Shaper is probably the easiest class, as long as you let your creations do all the fighting for you. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

You probably should turn it into a link, because Tripod doesn't allow hotlinking of images, so all that any of the rest of us get is the Tripod logo. :P That said, no discussion of Escher is complete without this: ![]() -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Today's name, Snake Oil, surely needs no explanation. Yes, there really were patent medicines which claimed to contain snake oil. Some may have actually contained snake oil; most probably didn't. The ones that didn't probably worked just as well as the ones that did. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

If you can't win a random wandering encounter without using up too many of your non-renewable resources (first aid kits and pila), running away is just the sensible thing to do. If you feel you absolutely must fight a particular battle, well, rely on potions first and foremost, since you can get those back after the battle. Try and manoeuvre your party so nobody is getting attacked by more than one monster at a time. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! The 19th and early 20th century, as you are likely beginning to appreciate, was a fertile breeding ground for quackery. Another in the long list of the era's useless medical treatments was the electric belt, sometimes advertised with claims to cure every disease known to man. (If you're going to lie, you may as well make it a big lie.) Electric belts generally applied a weak electric current to the skin, which was unlikely to do anything but cause discomfort. Many belts had to be dipped in a solution of acid before use, which was likely to cause even more discomfort. One person has previously reported a bug similar to this, but we've had difficulty replicating it. Can you please tell us exactly when the crash occurs (i.e. after what line of dialogue?) I have to keep this up for another 20 days? What was I thinking? Today's name, Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, was one of the most famous and popular patent medicines of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, advertised for the treatment of disorders of the reproductive system (a fairly common claim among patent medicines, for some reason). The fact that the medicine was over 15% alcohol probably contributed to its popularity. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! The script-checking utility you've likely been reading about is Alint, which is only available for Mac OS X. (Unfortunately, Khoth's site seems to be down at the moment, so you can't even get that.) Why do you say that Jeff must have one? I'm sure he's capable of proofreading and testing his own scripts. And since you'll eventually need to test your scenario the old-fashioned way anyway, Alint can only do so much. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! (Hope nobody minds the double post to bump the topic.) Today's name, Radium, is a radioactive element which has the interesting property of spontaneously emitting greenish-blue light. In the early 20th century, it was popular for painting clock faces and dials so they would glow in the dark. Radium was also used medically; in one popular product, a disc of radium was left to sit in water with the intention of infusing the water with radon, a radioactive gas which is the decay product of radium. Radium compounds were even administered by injection in some cases. Sellers of radioactive medicines proudly advertised the "health-promoting" effects of the radiation emitted by their product. Radiation, unfortunately, turned out not to be so health-promoting after all. Of course, radiation is still used in modern medicine for procedures such as cancer treatment, but with somewhat more caution. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted!
