Your talents are wasted here, my friend.

I predict an honourary knighthood for you. I'll alert the Queen so she can add you to the list.

And...snake oil. Yum. If only I could see Drew's picture and read what ailments it cures... stupid MSPaint blurs it out of all recognition at just 2x.

Alex, please update your website with these new pictures! I've given all my friends the URL, but they're all hungry for more pictures, and aren't on Spiderweb!

The majority of these latest pictures would make more sense if you gave the link to this thread to your freinds.

Animal "oil" usually comes from fat or blubber. My question therefore is:

Is there a direct correlation between the disappearance of fat snakes and the historically recent decline in snake oil medicine?

Dammed for eternity, ye and your kin!

Makes me wonder how much of modern medicine will be eligible to appear in this kind of thing several centuries from now...

Today's name, Phrenology, is more a matter of bad psychology than bad medicine, but I think it still counts. Phrenology was practiced by the ancient Greeks and experienced a resurgence of popularity in the 19th century (what is it with the 19th century, anyway?) Phrenology was a method of assessing personality traits by measuring the shape of the head, the idea being that bumps on the surface of the head reflect bumps on the outer skull, which reflect enlarged regions of the brain, which correspond to personality traits and mental abilities.

Well, there were a few problems with this idea. Firstly, bumps on the surface of the head don't correspond to bumps on the skull. Secondly, bumps on the skull don't correspond to enlarged regions of the brain. Thirdly, enlarged regions of the brain don't correspond to personality traits and mental abilities in anything like the way phrenologists thought they did. Three strikes and phrenology was out.

It's also the name of a pretty decent album by The Roots.

What exactly are you asking me to describe? The sensation? Being an acid-covered electric belt I would assume it is something of a burning/itching sensation.

This I have done. Good idea actually. I got a few remarks like "Who the heck are these people", and "Spiderweb huh? Sounds rubbish", but the majority of them, well 4 out of the 7 I told loved them. You have a fan in one AJW (name not supplied by his wishes.

Orson Scott Card memorably describes phrenology as "dowsing for brains." It's a description I like.

—Alorael, whose brains are indeed dowsed regularly with substances.

Four new members, comin' up.

Shoot, I noticed that on the first post, but my brain phased it out on the second, even with the quotes. Therefore the picture of Hoover Dam. :D

Substances. You don't think skribbane has only one active ingredient, do you?

Today's name, Strychnine, is a powerful poison that acts by overstimulating nerves. Because of this method of action, it was once popular in tonics. These tonics probably did have some beneficial effects on concentration and alertness, but fatal overdoses were all too common. Nowadays, strychnine is still available in some places as a rat poison, but it's not intended for human consumption.

Does anybody understand that? (Thuyrl and Aran need not apply, since they will, and I'll be proven wrong.) I tried to have it explained to me once, but to no avail. I remember telling my physics teacher to forget it. I never questioned him again...

It states the relationship between mass and energy. Specifically, one kilogram of mass can be converted (assuming perfect, total conversion) into a bit less than 9*10^16 joules of energy. The ratio, c^2, is the square of the speed of light in meters per second.

—Alorael, who doesn't consider that such a difficult equation as long as you know what the variables mean. Finding ways to use it is what earns physicists large grants.

It's nice to learn that someone has such a high opinion of me (I merit being compared with Thuryl?), but the formula itself *is* pretty simple. It's what people do with it and derive from it that is so awfully difficult to follow. I have to pass.
