Animal "oil" usually comes from fat or blubber. My question therefore is: Is there a direct correlation between the disappearance of fat snakes and the historically recent decline in snake oil medicine? *this message sponsored by snake oilers local #112 (disbanded)* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Today's name, Phrenology, is more a matter of bad psychology than bad medicine, but I think it still counts. Phrenology was practiced by the ancient Greeks and experienced a resurgence of popularity in the 19th century (what is it with the 19th century, anyway?) Phrenology was a method of assessing personality traits by measuring the shape of the head, the idea being that bumps on the surface of the head reflect bumps on the outer skull, which reflect enlarged regions of the brain, which correspond to personality traits and mental abilities. Well, there were a few problems with this idea. Firstly, bumps on the surface of the head don't correspond to bumps on the skull. Secondly, bumps on the skull don't correspond to enlarged regions of the brain. Thirdly, enlarged regions of the brain don't correspond to personality traits and mental abilities in anything like the way phrenologists thought they did. Three strikes and phrenology was out. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Orson Scott Card memorably describes phrenology as "dowsing for brains." It's a description I like. —Alorael, whose brains are indeed dowsed regularly with substances. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Today's name, Strychnine, is a powerful poison that acts by overstimulating nerves. Because of this method of action, it was once popular in tonics. These tonics probably did have some beneficial effects on concentration and alertness, but fatal overdoses were all too common. Nowadays, strychnine is still available in some places as a rat poison, but it's not intended for human consumption. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! It states the relationship between mass and energy. Specifically, one kilogram of mass can be converted (assuming perfect, total conversion) into a bit less than 9*10^16 joules of energy. The ratio, c^2, is the square of the speed of light in meters per second. —Alorael, who doesn't consider that such a difficult equation as long as you know what the variables mean. Finding ways to use it is what earns physicists large grants. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's nice to learn that someone has such a high opinion of me (I merit being compared with Thuryl?), but the formula itself *is* pretty simple. It's what people do with it and derive from it that is so awfully difficult to follow. I have to pass.
