Oh. For some reason I have always confused Diethylstilbestrol with Thalidomide. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Congratulations Thuryl! I can't even pronounce your current moniker [copy][paste] diethylstilbestrol [/paste][/copy] . Every time I try to, it comes out as "dyithyllitbestrol" or some like it. Thalidomide was unproportionally less long-lasting in the consequences though. For one, the deformations were not hereditary afaik, and for the other, they came to light immediately and not after the medication had already been used for some 30 years. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! The problems caused by DES aren't hereditary as such either. The reason a third generation was affected was that the abnormalities in the reproductive tracts of women whose mothers had been treated with DES led to problems with the foetal development of their own children. Since those problems (mostly premature births and neurological abnormalities) don't generally affect the reproductive system of the child, it's not expected that the fourth generation will experience any problems. As opposed to the problems a mentally handicapped person with stunted, misformed, or altogether missing limbs would have getting to the child-birthing point. Granted, the range of impacts Thalidomide had on a fetuses was large - not all of them had deformation in all limbs or were necessarily mentally handicapped, but yeesh! it was pretty bad stuff. Interestingly, it's not entirely off the market - it's still a valid treatment for the acute treatment of the cutaneous manifestations of moderate to severe erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a particularly unhappy sort of lesions. It is way, way, way controlled though regarding to whom it can be prescribed, and physicians are required to educate their patients thoroughly regarding the risks. It does have a pretty enormous "black box" warning in its US labeling though, which spells out lots of unpleasantness, and also, as a rule, prevents it from being advertised at all. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Time zones, remember? I was changing around 12-1 pm my time the past two days. It's now 3:30 pm as I post this, on account of the fact that I only just got home from university. Still once a day. :P My current name, Monkey Glands, refers, of course, to the early-20th-century fad for surgically implanting slices of monkey testicle in older men, in the hope of restoring their youth and virility. I hope it comes as no surprise to anybody that this didn't actually work, although it was very popular in its time. (Actually, even going by forum time, this was still posted the day after the previous name change.) Okay, I'm curious where this fad took place. Cuz here in the States we had fads related to being young, boozing, spawning, gambling (NYSE), starving, and sick with flu-like symptoms. I don't remember the testicles being part of any of those things. And where did the testicles come from? I mean, I know where testicles come from, but where did the monkeys come from that donated their testicles? Also, were the testicles treated in any way prior to insertion, or were they raw? *this message sponsored by viagra* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I expect this produced even worse birth defects than Diethylstilbestrol. So when the wife was complaining that the children were behaving like a bunch of howler monkeys...
