Just so you know, when people say "BoX", they mean Blades of Exile and Blades of Avernum. The abbreviation for Blades of Exile is BoE. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Nope. The practice also predates standardised spelling. :P Well, I have a cold and shouldn't be a awake now. I'm off to down a couple of antihistamine tablets and go to sleep. Hey, wouldn't it be ironic if those were later found to have some horrible side effect? It is also, as I explained in one of the other topics, the nickname of a basketball player, as are several of the other recent titles. At the time I made that post, the right half of the image was white with a couple of regularly-spaced black bands, while the left half looked relatively random. I reloaded the image a couple of times with similar results. It's not happening at the moment, though. I suspect it's not actually the fault of the random bitmap generator, but rather because my browser sucks at displaying images. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! It's still 11 pm. I'm not late, just somewhat delayed. :P My new name, Trephination, is the drilling or cutting of a hole in the skull. Not for the sake of performing brain surgery, mind you -- just for the sake of making the skull have a hole in it. Centuries ago, surgeons (or at least, what passed for surgeons in those days) used to perform this procedure to treat mental illness or epilepsy, among other conditions. The fact that this procedure was mostly carried out before the days of aseptic surgery and antibiotics probably didn't have a beneficial effect on the patient survival rate. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! quote:An interesting epistemological question I recently stumbled across: Suppose you are omniscient. This means you have knowledge of every fact. Knowledge is generally defined as a justified true belief -- that is, a belief based on some kind of solid evidence rather than merely a guess. Now, if you are omniscient, you must know that you are omniscient, since this is a fact. This means you have a justified true belief that you are omniscient. What kind of justification can there be for the belief that there's absolutely nothing you don't know? -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! The problem is almost certainly that you're not using the most recent version of BoA. The HLPM uses string manipulation calls, which version 1.0.0 of BoA doesn't support. It's best to stick with investing skill points in a single weapon type from the start. In Avernum 3, damage is capped at 199, so you'll eventually do 199 damage to everything no matter what weapon you're using. As such, it doesn't actually make a huge difference which weapon type you use. (Pole weapons are somewhat better in terms of damage, but they're mostly two-handed.) -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! It wouldn't be a very good source of randomness. If you use the digits of pi in order, they're obviously going to be predictable. So you have to use some random method for picking digits, in which case you can just use that as your randomiser and skip the step involving pi. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Nodes and SDFs are completely different. A node is something that performs an action; an SDF just stores information. Some nodes set or check SDFs, but others have nothing to do with SDFs at all. You only need one node to give the party an item, but you'd need another node to set an SDF to store the information that they've been given the item (so that it can't be given twice, for example). Try using the Wait 100 Moves command in a town. Without Recuperation you'll gain the princely sum of 2 HP. With Recuperation you'll gain 20 HP or so. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

A custom character has no default skills, but gets 65 skill points that you can spend on anything you want. Experiment a little and see what works best. Today's name, Laudanum, is an extract of opium in alcohol, popular in tonics in the 19th century. Laudanum was prescribed to men, women and children alike for all kinds of ailments, and while it undoubtedly granted a certain measure of short-term relief from the stresses of life, its widespread usage would hardly be considered responsible medical practice today. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! That's right. As a result, there are some skills that it just isn't sensible for some classes to buy training in, because they'll need them early on. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

1,000,000+/100,000. I live in a country with only 20 million people in it, so if a million random people from my own country die, chances are that several people I know are going to be among them, and that wouldn't be much fun. 100,000 seems like a reasonable upper limit. On the other hand, if I were able to choose to bump off, say, the entire population of Trinidad and Tobago, I doubt I'd lose anyone who I'd particularly miss.
