Elram is in Vale Infestation (a bandit fort). Head a short distance due south from Marralis and you'll find it. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Today's name, Atropine, was originally used more as a cosmetic than a medicine, but the line between the two isn't always clearly defined, especially in this case. A toxin derived from certain plants, particularly henbane and deadly nightshade, atropine was fashionable both in ancient times and during the Renaissance; women applied it to their eyes to dilate their pupils. Of course, this caused extreme sensitivity to light and would often temporarily render them almost blind, but evidently that was a small price to pay. It's still used in controlled doses to dilate the pupils for ophthalmic examinations, in emergency treatment of some heart conditions, and as an antidote for insecticide or nerve gas poisoning, but using it just so you have pretty-looking eyes is generally discouraged. EDIT: Woo, 300 posts. And still 5 days to go! Let's see if we can make it to 400! Enter the lower half of the school, which is just to the southwest of the waste repository. Go down through there and exit through the lowest level, and there's the next set of caves. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! You need to go all the way through the Lower School to another set of caves, find the control room and turn on the power. After you've done that, head back to the major waste repository. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

You actually need several different rectangles surrounding the party, so that the party can be placed in such a way that they're not actually in a rectangle but can't go far without moving into one. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Considering that those faces you see on the picture all belong to prominent SW members whose pictures have been posted on these forums, I suspect that he made it himself. :P -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Today's name is Malaria, and it is being mentioned in its capacity as a treatment, not a disease. Before antibiotics, one experimental treatment for syphilis was to deliberately infect the patient with malaria, in the hope that the high fever produced by malaria would kill the bacteria that cause syphilis. Even today, some self-styled medical practitioners are infecting patients with malaria in an attempt to cure Lyme disease. There's no evidence that this has any effect on the course of either disease, and it has the obvious disadvantage that the patient ends up with two life-threatening diseases instead of one. It's an event that happens around day 160 or shortly afterwards. In order to trigger it, you have to wait until then. I'll refrain from saying anything more in case you want to see it for yourself. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Ah, yeah. The problem's almost certainly the begin_talk_mode(). You'll just have to do whatever dialogue you need through dialog boxes and the cutscene itself. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

I... wasn't aware of that particular remedy. Having just found out what it is, I must agree that it's certainly weird and unsettling enough to warrant a mention. I shall keep it in mind. You can do it after a cutscene, but only if that cutscene is triggered by the party stepping into a special rectangle. If it's triggered by something else -- like, say, using an item, or activating a terrain script -- then you can't move the party to a new town afterwards. The cutscene itself doesn't matter as far as the move_to_new_town call is concerned. You can put any code you want before move_to_new_town -- it's how the state is triggered that's the important part. (Incidentally, it's perfectly okay to teleport the party within a town at any time. It's only when you try to move them between towns that you have to worry about how the state is called.) Well, supposedly, it was considered absolutely essential to mix theriac in a marble vessel and not a metal one. If theriac was mixed in a metal container, metal could dissolve into it, with harmful results for the patient. (Considering how widely lead alloys were used in ancient times, this belief may have been well-founded.) -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Today's name, Theriac, was an elaborate mixture of various ingredients first used in ancient times, and once believed to be effective as a universal antidote to poison. During the first century AD, an ancient Roman doctor developed a standard recipe for theriac, involving 64 ingredients, including such interesting treats as viper's flesh and ground-up pearls, antlers and coral. Preparations of theriac were still popular in some places until the 18th century. Interestingly, the modern word "treacle" derives from theriac, apparently because theriac looked rather like molasses and was prepared using honey as a base. Can't be done, I'm afraid. The only way to successfully call move_to_new_town is if it's called by the party stepping on a special rectangle. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |
