Game Difficulty in The Avernum Trilogy

Damage in Avernum 3 is calculated differently than in the other Avernum games. Those high damages are balanced out by what they can do to you. You will find later on that this makes you need more health just to survive one blow.

If you want something similar, but with better balance try Avernum 1 and 2 or Nethergate: Resurrection.

There are some Greek letter to mark areas that correspond to the control room levers.

It takes some practice to get through this level. After going past the control room go into the first room. Fight some golems to get to a lever that reverses the moving floor near the control room.

There is a secret passage on this level that takes you back from the center part going to the fire pit to the south area when you make a mistake and will save some time. Now when you pass the control room window you can get onto the floor and go in to it.

Also there are stairs on the south side of the fire pit that take you to a lower level so you can come back with some fighting.

Nethergate Resurrection - Roman Singleton (some spoilers) in Nethergate

I think I'm going to start over with less Roman training and more strength. It takes too long to finish fights and without being able to charm beasts for a long time it gets much harder.

The next area I have to do is under Hagfen and the fomorians will use up more potions than I have. Then I would have to fight my way out of SelkieHome with the caraytids blocking the exit.

Update -

I punched through the Celtic tribesmen blocking the bridge northeast of the Ruined Hall. Then it was easy picking in the Goblin Pits and Galag-Trav.

After I reached level 16, I cleared the bridge to the Hollow Hills.

In Hagfen, you could only buy 1 level each of beast and craft circles. This means I really need to do the Selkie quest and then the Hagfen ones for charm beast spell.

This is much harder than I expected.

Double posted -

You will be able to do most of the Burial Glen before you hit the Crone Cavern. The hard part is those two undead beyond the first portal.

I found that you usually get hit so put points to fighting instead of defense.

Also after doing the Ruined Hall, make sure you visit the Stone Circle south of the Faerie Bazaar at least twice and after removing the curse go to the Hollow Hills for some more free spells.

Regarding training -

Herbcraft can be bought to 6 I think in Nethergate, after that go spend 50 to find the location of Shaylee the dryad south of Spire of the Ages since she can train you even higher.

Tool use can be bought east of the Faery Bazaar and then reward from Kaja and bought under the Celtic Shrine. This helps get the experience reward for trapped boxes.

Faerie lore can be bought for 1 level, then use items and train.

Tool use, woodscraft, and faerie lore are needed on the route through the Jagged Aerie to avoid damage, but it's hard as a singleton to get enough.

I'd push spell circles to gain the spirit and beast spells quickly. Protection provides an absurb reduction in damage early in the game.

The best armor that you can get is blessed chain mail in Galag-Trav until the icy chain mail near the end. You can't wear better.

Good Luck

Also you need to go back to the anvil on level 1 to finish this part. The is a room on level 2 that will also burn you.

The stones are wanted by someone in the Vale of Sould. Congratulations on getting them so early in the game.

There is a third Sylak key hidden in the mines if you find the right secret passage. Get use to banging on walls until you get piercing sight spell.

Ned Flanders from The Simpsons has someplace to take his kids.

Seriously, this allows them to "prove" to others that they are right even if they have to twist the facts. It's the next step from the books.

I checked while finding the GIFTS one in the Maze of Webs and there don't seem to be corresponding ones that change the reputation points. Whether Jeff got lazy or it was deliberate there don't seem to be any.

You can check by opening each script and use find command for 139,1 to locate each place.

The easiest way is to go good and then rob people for the nicer items like strength bracelet.

I remember after seeing Sammael and his request for the golden pelt going back and asking Aidin. He now has an option and he sends you down to the sarcophagus. There the crones summoned undead to attack you.

The two netherbeasts are for going into the area beyond there to loot the other 2 crypts beyond magic barriers.

Party creation? in Nethergate

One thing you need is a character with over 6 dexterity for the first slot by the time you finish the demo and go on to Vanarium. This will allow you to go first usually and there are several items that can boost this including the dexterity +2 bracelet under the Ruined Hall, a quicksilver band traded for at the stone circle near the Crone Cavern, and a spidersilk cloak.

I tried a Roman party of 4 druids and found that the highest spells of hero of old, and the beast circle weren't needed. You can get by with potions to duplicate most effects. Basically use protection, blessing, and haste (boots of quicksilver) to help your characters in combat and increase strength and Roman training. I hired Rhian to do beast summoning spells and slowing (coils of the serpent), It's weird watching four druids wandering around in blessed chain armor and later plate.

For the Celts I used two fighters and two druids. One fighter with sword and the other spears. One druid started with all the spells up to spirit circle level 3 and the other was a war druid with only spirit circle 1 for dispel spirit and battle circle at 6 so I could buy darts of ice at the start. I concentrated on getting them both so they could have all 8 levels in the 5 circles.

Celtic spell casting relies on charm beast and capture mind later on to force the enemy to attack one of their own. Summoned creatures make great shields to fire over and become the primary target for the enemy before you go into melee. You can attack a charmed monster with immunity. I never tried wind warriors since I have to cast it before combat. Soul lances and doom are way over powered and make the last few areas easier.

Still working on my singleton Roman game. Protection spell in the beginning will reduce damage significantly until you hit the mighty beast class. Versus the goblins they sometimes do no damage.

Use trainers for things like tool use, woodcraft, farie lore, and herbcraft. After your starting trainer gets you to herbcraft 6 you can buy more from the dryad south of the Spire of Ages.

That room no longer has the Fury helm, but only a poor wrymskin helmet. The Fury helm has been moved to the dragon's treasure hoard in the lowest level of the Abandoned Mines in the northwest corner.

To get in the fomorian area through a difficulty 15 door you only need tool use or strength of 8 and a lot of reloads or pass portal.

Using the wand acts like changing the game's hardness by increasing health and damage, but not experience.

7. According to the script, there is an egg near Goagh-Nar. Did anyone find it and what does it do?

Do you mean an easter egg? A literal egg as an item? There is a hidden area with a shade outdoors nearby—the missing fifth lost shade I couldn't find in my first full game. I think Jeff made its location a LOT more obvious subsequently. If you know what I mean.

I mean this from script o00

Step here again to revive the egg

9. The character editor lists two artifacts - robe of the groves and wrymsbane, who drops them?
robe of the groves is base 14% armor with 20% less chance of being hit, +80% protection versus petrification, and +5% resistance to magic

wrymsbane is a d5 one-handed sword with a +100 versus reptiles.

I would have remembered seeing these items.

After you complete the first major quest (slimes or cockroaches) you usually get the quest to check out the mysterious deaths in New Formello.

About day 40 to 60 is the theft of the Orb of Thranli. This can occur earlier, usually after the second major quest.

About day 110 is the Tower of the Magi quest.

About day 210 you need to be finished since you only were allowed 6 months.

Also if you are playing the Celts you have to choose on giving the Stones to Sammael for some spells or Rose Lady for +1 in the first four abilities. The Romans have it easy since Rose Lady won't give them the quest.

Khoth -

I did a quick test of save and load files between OS9 and your release 4 versions of BoE on iBook G4 using 10.3.9. Using the default party, enter VoDT scenario and move a square or two before saving, then I quit and start the other version. I appear in a weird spot where the images don't make sense, and if I move I now appear outside the starting fort even though I haven't moved that far. I get the problem no matter which one I start with for creation and then switch to for playing.

There is something definitely wrong with the way the versions are reading the player's location in the save files

Edit- fixed the typo for version number. Must not let you know about time travel.

Respawning dungeons means that you can't wander back to pick up another load of loot without paying attention. Nethergate: Resurrection does it this way and it isn't that much of a bother except the no experience part. Although sometimes it's weird to watch a goblin go past you in a corridor while the buffer clears out your excess movement commands and it seems to ignore you.

In Exile you can skip talking to people if you know the right clue word to give to the next person, while in Avernum you have to rely on going in order because it uses flags to trigger dialog options.

Unless you know the correct flag then your choices are to skip the quest or start over from the last saved game before you insulted Sick Boy.

I know Jeff's games generally don't, when they get Carbonized, but I don't have any idea what the technical reasons are for that (i.e. whether it's just hard or actually impossible).

The save game file may be in a slightly different format in OS 9 and OS X versions. All it takes is one number saved in a different format or order to cause trouble.

Some corrections:

Under Goblin Pits (L2)

BOON — 3 Experience Points — SIT in High Priest’s Chambers — NW

should read 3 Skill points and you need party total driudism of 8 to get it

The first group of spells need total party rune reading of 15 and the second group of spells needs a total of 20

Under Shadow Valley Fort (L2)

The hidden body for the Celts has a war charm instead of nimble gloves

Western Zone

NORTHWEST VALE - Derek’s Body — QUEST ITEM: Ring for ? in Vanarium Inn

? is Velanna

Goagh-Nar

Ordeal Descent L3

for Celts there is Nimble Gloves in room near start

Castle Aethdoc

LORD INDIGO’S CHAMBERS — N — locked box (need crystal to open???) [same as above?]

kill Lord Indigo for crystal key

his chambers has location of Eye of Cathac

opens treasury north of crypts
