I think back in Faust's day, anyone who went to a university and completed the program was qualified as a Doctor. As opposed to those that practiced the profession of doctor which just involved knowledge of how to"cure" someone. That's why barbers were doctors and their poles were red and white striped to symbolize their "abilities." Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

It takes a while the first time to figure out what to do. It gets worse doing the lower level and fighting the doomguard the first time. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

If you want something similar to AD&D, but with a better system to build with, try Hackmaster 4.0 (see Kenzer and Company. They got they license from Wizards of the Coast (now a division of Hasbro) to use AD&D 1st and 2nd editions. So they got an intern to scan all the books and modules in for a starting point. Read Knights of the Dinner Table at the same site for an idea of what playing is like. They put a lot of fun back into the game. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

You should be careful, that Eskimo has a sniper rifle. There was a discussion last year about adding music and with too many dial up customers, Jeff has held off adding anything that makes the game too large for easy downloading. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

You definitely need more intelligence. When you can train in magery then you have enough. You have more than enough endurance with enduring armor. To fight the platebug queen as a singleton you need some summoned creatures for shields while you use darts of ice to kill them off as quickly as possible. You don't need demonslayer, but you do need plenty of energy potions and a special key from Solberg. Ask around for information to point you in the right direction. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

There are a few exceptions to the rule that you can't move after spellcasting or attacking. Melee attacks allow you to move to another opponent as long as you will still have AP to attack after moving. You will see this happen with clawbugs and hasted golems. A bug allows you to move if you click on an item to search. This allows for movement when you shouldn't have it. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

You are just stirring up a debate. I use a party of 4 with a swordsman/archer/thief (nephil), pole arm (slith), two human mage/priests where one emphasizes mage and the other priest at the start. You can also play a single character once you know your way around the game. Mine tend to be fighter/mage/priest/thief with a strong priest at the end since the mage spells aren't worth it. The biggest emergency is that the party is stuck with no way out and no recent save. I had a party saved and then when I came back the boat was gone leaving me with no way to move. It helps when you don't want to pile up items because you are near the money cap. Then you can just add back in what you would have gotten. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

You didn't have your mage start with lightning spray *shocked*. Still it sounds good. If you have some money head south to the Tower of the Magi to gain higher level spells. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

This is out of date since there have been over a dozen new scenarios added, but it's a starting point for singletons. It will give you an idea of an order to play scenarios to build up your character. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Avernum 4 was strong on linear plot line. The earlier games allowed for more exploration and do what you want. I'm guessing that the first part will be fairly linear with clues to direct you. Avernum 4 had to be patched after release because players kept wandering off to explore areas before they were supposed to and the patches kept them in line. Since BoE source code is getting updated it would be possible for Jeff to use it as a starting point to continue the Exile series without that annoying Vahnatai plot line. It seems like Jeff will go back to Exile/Avernum 1 at some point and modernize it with a newer engine and more dungeons. It will be interesting to play Avernum 5 as Empire soldiers stuck down in Avernum with the worms. It ought to warm ET's ice cube of a heart. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Becoming a mod is a very involved process where a member suddenly gets raised and is now part of the order. Then he or she has to deal with idiots that post here. You wouldn't believe what we have to put up with here. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |
