I based my reply on the puzzle box on these topics one, two, three where Schrodinger and Aloreal said that Jeff had forgotten. I guess that this is a Spiderweb legend. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

With Avernum 4: A New Hope (Formation of the Darkside Loyalists), and Avernum 5: The Empire Strikes Back (the Empire goes after the Darkside Loyalists), does this make Avernum 6: The Return of the Magi where Jeff brings back the powerful mages from the earlier games - Solberg, Rune, X, and a resurrected Erika? Then there is the gun brought on stage where its purpose is forgotten by the creator. For example the Nethergate puzzle box in the lair of Reptrakos. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Wind Warriors have the nice advantage that they slow opponents. As a Roman party of 5, I tried summoned creatures, but that was too slow. Having to slow Reptrakos and his summoned stone guardians, do damage, and make sure that none of your buff, especially invulnerabilty go down really prolongs the fight. I really hate to use the doom scrolls since they help with Annwn and Spire of the Ages. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Accidentally double posted. New questions - 6. Has anyone found a better way to kill Reptrakos than use invulnerability potions and poke at him with sharp objects and spells? I think short of unkillable Sylak, that he has the most health of anyone that you can fight. 7. According to the script, there is an egg near Goagh-Nar. Did anyone find it and what does it do? 8. In Castle Aethdoc's north wing, piercing sight shows a room near the path to the eye and behind the banquet hall, but I can't find a secret door to it. I know from old Nethergate that you need to get all the Sylak keys before going into Goagh-Nar. As the Romans you can return before you go past that gate to the lowest level, but the Celts are always blocked once they go down. I found it helps to pile up as much loot as you can as close to the entrance for each side before doing the missions. This way you can transfer it to a safe point where it can be reached later in the game. 3. Never found out and it's from the old game. 4. As the Celts, the note refers to a seal in the walled off area to the north on the top level. If you don't have sever seal then this message helps you get past the seal to sneak in the back way to Queen Rit's rooms. 5. According to piercing sight there is nothing there. Good luck Jeff. I hope there will be some sections where we get to explore and not too linear a plot. I know that it's harder to balance, but there was a very simple limit on exploration called death. Go beyond what you are capable of and you get to reload. It makes it interesting if you can play better than average. As long as we don't get the return of the Eastern Gallery chitrachs it shouldn't be too bad. It'll be nice to have something near the beginning that has some detail. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Crystal gear is almost useless against basilisks since it only provides 80% resistance. The best thing is to charm beast the closest one and go after the others with missle weapons. I did get the one in the Crone's Cavern after several reloads with haste, bless, and protection. I still prefer to use tool use since you can buy it and not strength. Jeff reduced in half the extra damage from Roman training and weapons skills early on in beta testing to keep damage from getting ridiculous. The highest difficulty normal door is 18 and tool use 8 will get you through the trapped chests. There is a difficulty 200 door in the Spire of Ages. Mostly I need money to buy beast circle and then do the Hagfen quest for the beast circle scroll. Charm beast and call beast work great in torment. You can attack a charmed beast with immunity and summoned creatures make great shields. I need to save invulnerabilty potions for the major fights where I need time to cast spells to provide shields and charms. There are a limit on the best potions since I can't get craft elixir without delaying the beast circle spells and killing a god. Defense is almost useless since it doesn't help against spells and most things will have a small chance of hitting. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I started playing a singleton game as a Roman in torment. It's slow going and I've restarted and replayed parts trying out different ideas. The starting character has some druid abilities - druidism - 2, health circle - 1, war circle - 2 This means I can save money on potions and protection spell significantly reduces damage in the Abandoned Mine through the Ruined Hall. After this point you run into monsters that can get enough damage through to make a different approach necessary. Basic stats are - strength - 2, dexterity - 2, intelligence - 1, and endurance -2. The rest are luck - 2 for dropped items and Roman training. Character traits are strong back and fast on feet for 15% XP penatly. I sold my javelins to buy a leather sling from Julius (east of SV Fort). This reduces weight and cuts down on replacement costs. Then it's off to kill goblins and rats. A lot of creep up until I have one in sight then back off until only one is at the edge for slinging. If you avoid getting swarmed it's not too bad. Using protection and blessing before the fight speeds things up. I'm buying herbcraft to make my own potions and tool use from the trainer. Skill points go to raising endurance to 4, Roman training to 10, melee weapons to 2 for extra damage, and druidism to 4 to raise rune reading for more potion recipes. With a lot of tedious work I made it through the Ruined Hall. Killing the sidhe was the high point. Anyone else can post ideas on how to play a Roman singleton. The Celtic version will be different because of extra spell abilities. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I remember one friend's defense where an examiner fell asleep and when woken said it wasn't his area of interest and went back to sleep. This started a discussion on how many people actually read the dissertation besides the advisor. I did hear of one graduate student that was failed for being universally disliked by her department. It was said that her work was marginal and if she hadn't been so hated she might have been allowed to pass. But since it was a poor job they went after her. If you want stealth and mechanics go play Geneforge series. Avernum actually quickly limits the value of monster killing so most experience comes from doing quests. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Just because you can destroy the village doesn't mean you should at the start. Sometimes you make hostile someone you will need later on in the game. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

While it seems nice to gain experience in a skill by using it, I seem complaints that this can lead to grinding to use one skill constantly in a trivial manner like shooting at trees. The current system works. By making experience relative to your current level it discourages going after lower monsters where you gain nothing for it. The only places you need strong back are Goagh-Nar and Annwn. Castle Aethdoc allows you to leave and return as long as you don't claim your reward for finishing the mission. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

If you want day and night play Avernum 3 or Nethergate: Resurrection. You will find it gets boring quickly. Or Avernum 1 and 2 where all the shops close once a year and you have to find something to do while waiting to sell all that loot. I'm waiting for Jeff to really punish theivery by jacking up the prices in town after you steal a certain amount. Hey the merchants are just covering their losses. My only problem is that you can't get enough money to properly use the trainers for a full party. The big money comes at the end when you need it least. Still you can make 15,000 to 18,000 coins looting Castle Aethdoc if you take the time and pick up everything. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Use tab key and name identifiers appear next to each character. You do sort of get used to identifying characters. No lighting system was a major complaint especially in the lower levels where it's hard to see dark objects on dark floor. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Edit to include a missing item - For those of you that like to powergame. The party's reputation as good and evil is designed so you can only get the bonus reward for one and for the Roman game when you get to the Spire of Ages testing. You start at base 100 and good is 130 and over with evil being 70 and under. The things that make a difference are: 1 - South of Vanarium helping Adams get the wolf (+5) with warrior's ring reward or robbing him (-8) and get superior longsword and some coins 2 - Near Jagged Aerie the trapped gryphon - help (+10) ,attack (-10) makes the Aerie hostile, but you can get past the sentinel gryphon with food to get to the molting gryphon so you can postpone decision 3 - Near Faeire Bazaar helping Conn-give money (+5), no (-5) 4- If Roman then attacking Throd the hungry Fomorian(-5), food(+5) and get a shield. 5 - North of the Hollow Hills releasing (+10) or robbing the bound Selkie (-10) of his strength bracelet +2 , leave (-3) 6 - North of the Spire helping the little people by killing the Fomorian to the north(+10), fail (-10) 7 - North of the Spire taking the ant ring (spearflinger) and attacking the green haired sprite or fleeing no change, give it to her (+10) 8 - Southwest of Nethergate at the crossroad the blind beggar - give (+10) rob (-10) and get a silver bracelet 9 - Stone circle near Crone Cavern take items (-5) 10 - Hut east of Crone Cavern - leave alone (+10) , rob for some herbs 11 - Attacking the GIFTS sentry (-5), turns the place hostile 12 - Kill the GIFTS babies in Maze of Webs (-15) don't do this before finishing quests The good reward is northwest of the Hollow Hills and southeast of the Maze of Thorns in the place where a bright shaft of light appears. The evil reward is southwest of Vanarium. I was wrong and missed one It looks like Jeff left out some points to deliberately make it impossible to get both rewards. Use 30 points to get the good reward and there are 73 evil points left. Five less if playing Celts. The flag is (139,1) for those that want to check scripts. (139,3) is marked as killer and causes some places to be hostile or blocked. This is part of the evil "reward." Jeff always makes some sales since after someone plays the newest game, they go and look for something else to play. Most people can't wait a year until the next one. This is a rare occurance where an extra game was released. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |
