As part of the ongoing ostrich movement in the US government, one of the latest statements is that "there is no credible intelligence that a similar bombing is planned in the US." Of course that is also what was said in hindsight after the World Trade Center incident in 2001. *this message is deeply cynical and distrustful of official statements* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

My condolences to our friends in England that have been affected by this latest bombing. Fear is contagious, so I extend those feelings of warmth to everyone that lives in a large city and depends on public transportation. As Andrew noted, suicide bombers are difficult to detect, and the fear of this happening elsewhere can impact people all around the world. As much as it seems contrary, don't let them win by making you display the fear. Whoever is ultimately responsible is definitely watching CNN, and wants to see people scurrying around in fear. That is the payoff for them. Certainly be vigilant and alert, and ensure the safety of your surroundings as best you can, but do not let them succeed in creating terror. *this message is in support of the free world* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I think Drake was refering to the area on the hard drive where the game exists. Check the permissions on that directory to verify that your normal logon name (not admin) is able to enjoy full control of that space. I run Win 2000, and that info is located by right clicking the directory, then selecting properties, then selecting the security tab. Highlight the username, or everyone, and make sure that full control has a checkmark in the "allow" column. I hate XP, so I can't guide you as effectively, but it should be similar, or at least the words used wil be familiar. *this message funded by gates - guys against tyrannical enterprise software* -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Two options. The first is to delete the program and go back to designing BoA scenarios, the second is to read the walkthrough (link is posted in the Geneforge 1 forum) and get some idea on character development. It does take some getting used to, which is why I offer option 1. *this message is complete - there is nothing special about the signature* -------------------- WWtNSD? Thuryl - I've always (ya know, since infancy) used that definition for fruit, but vegetable is a word I've used to describe edible plant materials that are commonly found in gardens. Like spinach, lettuce, celery, swiss chard, rhubarb, and artichoke (I know it's the flower.) Then there are tubers, like potatoes, and root vegetables like radish, beet, and carrot. I've got all that stuff in my garden, hopefully growing into healthy and delicious meals. No mutant plants though, just normal sized stuff. *this message sponsored by better homes and gardens, mines better than yours* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

It seems that people other than Thralni have had problems with the name of this game. I had a freeze once with GF3. It was entirely my fault however, as I was switching between the game and the four other active applications at the time. If you are doing the same, I would suggest that having fewer open applications might be the answer. At least, it was for me. *this message sponsored by gates - separating us from true multitasking once again* -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Ahhhh Living in a small rural community really pays off in spades on the blow'em up holidays (there are more than one :P ). We went downtown and were entertained by all the families shooting off their illegal fireworks from Washington, then a 30 minute display of official fireworks, and now is the best! Everyone out in the country shoots their guns into the air/ground/trees/loose crap lying around the fields/outbuildings/beer cans. Sweet mother of god the dogs are hiding underneath each other now. Poor puppies. Sorry to hear about Cutie, but it's good that KitKat is keeping her chin up about the news. Cats are good like that, my dog will mope for days if I go out fishing all night and leave him "alone." Well, off to reload and shoot the "stuff" *this message is possible because some dead guys had a freaking excellent idea 230 years ago* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

That very fishiness is what makes it highly unlikely that one person could throw the election. Once Drakey has finished "tallying" the votes, he could email the candidates with their vote totals, and their rank. I would suspect that conversations might occur, and then Drakey would receive emails telling him how to redistribute votes. What would be ideal is if every candidate got an equal number of votes. And then there is that whole blood tensioning process afterwards. That sounds more like the kind of electioneering I would have been comfortable engaging in. Oh well, maybe next time. *this message has not yet been rated by the mpaa* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I would consider myself a reader, but not a fan, of the Potter books. There have been better series out there, and there have been worse. More coming of age stuff, just like the others, but within a different set of world rules and with different inner-demons with which he contends. What I find especially distressing about the Potter series is the extreme marketing of the books. It's almost like a person is labeled as "bad" if they don't read/enjoy/talk about them. The Earthsea trilogy, Narnia, Swallows and Amazons, Covenant, Tolkien, and many others were equally as good/ground-breaking/healthy and they have enjoyed excellent reputations and readerships without the marketing forces that push Potter. It makes me wonder if the Rowling series would have been so successful without them. Or how much more successful the Covenant series might have been. *this message sponsored by tom holt - please read his books* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Huh. I had resigned this topic to a peaceful and anonymous death. Thanks for the answers, although they certainly weren't what I expected. Perhaps my question sucked. I'll try to rephrase, although you should feel free to ignore it and respond as to the weather. Why a role playing game set in a "new/unsettled" area? I'm sure there are other types of games on the market, but we choose this for our devotion. I personally like this junk because it is a world created for me to change for the better. My actions or inactions do have an impact on the world around me, and my actions are generally relied upon for positive social change. This is in direct contrast to the real world, where my function is more or less irrelevent. Not because of some misplaced sense of low self esteem, but because there is no capacity in the real world for the same type of positive social impact to be made by one person. After re-reading this, I've noticed that I may be perceived as having a low esteem for society. I feel no need to edit this. *this message sponsored by legal fireworks, redefining suck with every fizzle* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I fully realize that this will sound moronic, given my frequent posting on these election threads, but could you remind me to which forum the elected moderator will be assigned? Edit - Thanks ADoS for the quick answer. Personally, I would have thought you could extend that answer to more than one word, but I give you credit for capitalizing and punctuating it. And of course I'm editing rather than replying because a post of "Thanks." would have been excessively spammy. *this message displays both short and long term memory issues* [ Saturday, July 02, 2005 15:30: Message edited by: Jumpin' Salmon ] Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I would also suggest he was joking. I would also suggest that anyone finding a MITS Altair 8800 in decent condition place it in a bank vault and start contacting brokers. As this is merely a poll, and not the mandatory vote by email ballot, I think the level of compliance may not increase. This does give an idea of which candidates are "viable" and which ones are "sushi," which was the entire point. Perhaps if people started emailing real votes to drakey@voicenet.com[/url] then this may be come once again the main topic of discussion. *this message sponsored by the sound of thunder and feel of rain* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

There have been a number of discussions about that problem already. I assume you have checked and didn't see them, as the topics have been a little vague recently. I had to retire from a promising music career when my gf complained about the racket. I was in a trio. I would start singing, and then the dogs would join in, then the neighbor's dog would try to make it a quartet. It ended in tears when she played back a secret recording and I discovered that I SUCKED. The dogs recently went on to sign with Geffen. *this message sponsored by the RIAA, always looking out for the little guy* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I first heard the song All-Star when I went to Fenway Park in 1999 to watch the Homerun Derby. It was an unforgetable experience, and since then that song always gets me going. And, that's all I've got, except that water flows downhill and as young salmon make their way to the ocean they swim backwards, noses into the current. *this message contains a prize, just like cracker jacks* Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |
