I'm glad someone already asked what the heck this is all about, since I have no idea either. Ditto on liking and disliking parts of both designers scenarios. That said, I have NEVER played BoE, and never will. So stop comparing scenarios or referring to some higher ideal of design. This is a G A M E. I play it to enjoy myself, relax, and escape from reality. I am also trying to make a scenario, but will likely never finish, as I don't have the skillset in scripting to make it a satisfying experience for ME. I appreciate every designers attempts at scenarios, and play each and every one (several times). Without having a leg to stand on here, I'll say one more thing. I read time and again that getting the scenario out to the public is ten times more important than a superb, yet unfinished masterpiece. I certainly didn't expect to find designers sniping at each other over philosophy or direction of a community. I certainly wouldn't want anyone to tell me how to act, think, or design. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I feel honored to have been quoted so early in my existance. Fewer than 10 posts. :) Side note - anyone else having problems with the board? I am horrified and yet I read it... Where is the savings in typing "ware"? One letter? Da for the? Don't try to look cool, as you may have noted the audience here is fairly sophisticated (and insane.) -------------------- WWtNSD? Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I would prefer to not get a custom title, as it could only be bad. :) Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Me too. Try poking around in the store room in the lower level. Just inside the cave entrance... You should find a couple of objects there that would help, especially if a person was to carry them up to the weak ground. Good luck. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

For everyone interested in myths, their origins, and supposed meanings, I would highly recommend "When they severed earth from sky" by Barber and Barber. Highly informative, and definitely gives valid basis for some future scenarios. Basic premise is that myth=oral history, short is sweet, message must stay intact through many tellings, and finally the message is usually a warning of disaster. For example, several figures in Greek myth can be construed both from general description and from greek art work as representations of volcanoes. Two cases are the Gorgons and the Titans. The most interesting note in the book (imho) is the interpretation of Excalibur. Iron is the key in an era of bronze armor, and an army with iron weapons and armor will crush those with bronze (or cloth). It happens that a tribe of people on the southern coast of the Black Sea were smelting iron long before others in the Med area. The inhabitants of the region were Chalybians, which can be combined with Ex (L. Out of or From) to create the new word for a superior weapon. Ex-chalybia. Anyhow it is a good book, full of ideas that could push a wandering designer into a great scenario. As for the original question, creation myths tend to have epic heroes that are given credit for battling the monsters of chaos to make the world safe. Definition of world is the known area at that era and place. We just live in an unfortunate time where the world is the whole planet and almost nothing is left for discovery. :) Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Reparations are just an idle thought that happened to be spoken out loud in the wrong company. It would be impossible to calculate the damage done to a culture by the incursion of a stronger culture. I strongly suggest "guns, germs, and steel" by Jared Diamond for anyone interested in why civilization is distributed as it is. As to affirmative action, I have a hard time believing that the true intent of the (US) legislation was to disadvantage some truly qualified applications because they happened to be of a certain ethnic group. Like all laws, it has been mangled and LCD'd in order to receive approval from the masses. Our current "enlightened" era of government would like to be forgiven for the errors of the past and to make sure that it never happens again. Eye candy. It will happen again, somewhere on the planet, (perhaps) because it is human nature to conquer and therefore oppress. Drat. Only my 3rd post and already have written a rambling opinion. Forgive me. Actually, Karen is asking you to look in a private house. There are 4 houses just to the north of her shop, enter the NE of those houses, break the barriers, and then approach the bookcase. You then get the nothing found message and can return empty handed, yet successfully, to Karen for a pat on the head. Not really a bug, more like a scripting error. I played this again with a singleton character and after dying several times in the final battle came up with the alternative. Before entering the room I entered fight mode and proceeded to pick off each opponent one by one until only the leader remained. Despite the "You may make people angry at you" message, my archer killed each opponent in one shot, and no one turned hostile. I wonder if this happened because the dialogue box hadn't happened yet?? EDIT/Addition - Win2k, can't find a version #, but I did put on a sign-fixing patch when I got the game...
