OOC: No, for the simple reason that people didn't want to let them die. I suggest that we let Nazgul do one big finishing post-since he started the topic-and then just leave it. I'll archive it after that's happened, and anyone that wants a copy can have one.

OOC: Just a small point: Now that we've kind of completed the main objective of the RP, I'd prefer to see it round itself off in style than dwindle into obscurity while people invent little finicky plot twists and create loose ends to tie up. Let's deal with the mercenaries, have the populace accept Molek as their rightful ruler, and have done with it already.

IC:

Delgar looked at Balthazar, then shut his eyes. Opening them a second later, he looked worried.

'We may not even have time to do that-the mercenaries have broken down the door. There's only one thing to do. I'm going to attempt a two-way illusion. Don't be surprised at what happens, and Alcove, you're going to need to use your wits.'

Suddenly, the party appears to be in the main hall of Balthazar's tower. The mercenaries have just bashed down the door and are about to enter. Balthazar, under Alcove's control, stands up and faces them, lifting his staff into the air. Bemused, the mercenaries stop dead, as confused by the fact that Balthazar is wearing only a tunic as they are by his presence on the ground floor of his tower, when he was previously under attack. Before any of them can do anything, Alcove recovers the situation. Balthazar takes another step forward and, under Alcove's control, begins to explain the situation.

'Men! The battle is ended, and although you were not there, you will not be punished. Siris Island now has a new ruler!'

An angry murmuring begins in the ranks of the mercenaries. Balthazar continues, while Alcove turns to Molek, whispering fast.

'I this day give over my crown to its rightful owner, Molek, the nephew of Theodus.'

Molek quickly steps forward to stand at Balthazar's side. Delgar, after a very hurried consultation with Alcove, steps forward as well, and hands Balthazar an illusionary crown, a perfect replica of the crown of Siris Island except for the small detail that it has no physical presence. Balthazar takes it, and turns to Molek, who kneels briefly while Balthazar places it on his head, then rises again.

Suddenly a voice of dissent comes from the crowd.

'Ere, what about our pay?'

The noise swells as more mercenaries join in:

'Yeah, we 'aven't been paid in months! What's 'e going ta do about that?'

'Silence'

Alcove's voice, magically augmented, quells the storm of protest, simultaneously causing those standing next to her to cover their ears in pain. Into the calm, Molek speaks.

'I will pay your wages, of course. But only if you return to your barracks immediately. Is this understood?'

Without an answer, the assembled rabble turns and heads off. As they do, the entrance hall disappears, and the party find themselves once more in Balthazar's throne room, sans crown. Delgar pipes up:

'I'm never doing that again, not even to save all our skins. I need a rest, and a long one.'

'But what about the coronation?'

'That can wait until tomorrow. It'll be all the better for some planning. I, for one, am going to find an empty room and sleep for at least ten hours, and I suggest you all do the same. Eferas, you look positively undead.'

Nodding in acquisence, the party begins to follow.

OOC: MSW, I know I ignored Alcove's pain thing. That's mainly because I don't want to be the one to define what it is. I'v just assumed that it isn't something significant enough that she's incapacitated by it-I'll leave the details to someone else. Other than that, I would seriously suggest this RP ends in around 5 more posts (that's approximate, not an unbreakable command) otherwise the ending will be blurred into insignificance. There's nothing more to do here but tie up very small loose ends-we'd do better to start another RP.

'As to the mind controlling spell, I say cast it soon. As to the mercenaries, they will accept anything from Balthazar if we can find his treasury. And as to my lord Molek...'

Delgar turns to Molek and bows.

'My lord, may I be the first to salute you in your office as the new lord of Siris island, and offer you my lifelong fealty?'

Molek, equally seriously, responds:

'I shall be glad of your aid, Delgar. And yours, Alcove. Now, let us see to these mercenaries...'

Balthazar laughed.

'You may know my secret, but there's no way any of you will get close enough to me to hurt me!'

Turning, he threw a fireball at Kel-Aziz. Fast as the Darubian was, he had to dive to avoid it, and the second charred the wall just next to him, making his face go red from the heat. Just as Shadow Wolf approached from behind him, he turned, swinging his staff and letting loose a flurry of energy bolts, forcing the blademaster to leap back to safety. Namothil leaped at him, but Balthazar waved his staff again, creating a wall of fire in the assassain's path.

'We've got to co-ordinate! It's no good attacking him one by one, hit him at the same time!'

The three warriors grouped together to charge the archmage. Glaring at them, he raised his staff into the air, before bringing it down onto the ground, creating a mighty shockwave that threw them all back. Laughing, he almost lazily threw another fireball, seemingly indifferent to the ease with which the warriors dodged it.

'Attack from all sides!'

But they had not even started to spread out when the greatest surprise of all occurred: Balthazar's robes suddenly began to burn. Screaming, the archmage began to claw at them, ripping them from him, before he realised the enormity of his actions. Summoning up his greatest magical strength, he cast one final spell, but no more water appeared than the smallest drop, which fell on to the flames, sizzling out immediately. Even as Delgar appeared behind him, holding a still glowing torch in his hand, Balthazar rushed for the throne room doors, but before he had covered half the distance, Shadow Wolf stood waiting for him. Turning, he dived for his throne, but Kel-Aziz stood there already. Throwing himself to the floor in the centre of the room, he looked up imploringly:

'Spare me, I beg of you!'

'You've lived long enough, evil one.' Delgar stood over him accusingly. 'Who would you have spared of us? None-deny it not! So how do you expect to be spared by us?'

'No!' Shadow Wolf stood in front of Delgar. 'He is disempowered, his reign is ended. Is it necessary to take his life as well?'

'He would have had no mercy on us, would he? And will he not search for a way to return his former power, should we let him go? I say kill him.'

Shadow Wolf looked towards Kel-Aziz. 'What say you, Darubian?'

OOC: Nazgul, you started this RP. Go ahead and finish it in style!

I don't recommend SF RPGs. Except for the Spiderprise, which worked because it was only one level above unadulterated stupidity (I'm talking about the first one. The recent one died a horrible, if swift, death.), there isn't enough freedom-unless it's just an RP stuck on a planet with high-tech stuff instead of magic. Otherwise, once people get on a space-ship they become confined, and action breaks down as only a few people have any ability to mould events without being accused of god-gaming. Especially, it's almost impossible to have a decent-sized subplot on board a spaceship.

I concur. Also, if she really is an airhead, the attraction will wear off once he finds that all topics of conversation are exhausted within the first 10 minutes. If you still find you like him after, you may find your relationship better due to the contrast for him. Conversely, if he actually still likes her after he discovers what an airhead she is, you've probably made a fortuitous escape. I know that that degree of dry logic is probably not what you were looking for, but it's the best consolation I can offer you...

I'm taking part in a debate next week about whether the printed word has or should be rendered obsolete by the technological revolution, and I'm not ashamed to say I'm a pretty poor debater, so I'll just ask if anyone here has any thoughts on the issue. (I'm opposing, saying that books are still important, but I'd be interested in opinions on either side.)

Thanks.

OOC: I think MSW has already had some demons come through...destroying the portal is pretty much whenever, I suppose.

IC:

Anxiously, Delgar's image peered through the wall of the room where Alcove and Arcadia were fighting.

Alcove could take out Arcadia or those demons, but never both at once. I'll have to do something...but what?

Scrying magically, Delgar searches for weaknesses in Arcadia's magical body...and finds one. Approaching Arcadia, his image reaches out and touches her. At once, she is frozen in place. Her voice rings out.

'What? What are you doing, Delgar?'

'Your spirit is sitting inside an illusion, Arcadia. What you don't know is that illusions can be melded. You don't understand how illusions work, you just use them like those demons you summon. I can control you, Arcadia. Your illusion is weak, and badly made.'

Arcadia begins waving her hands, and the demons surrounding Alcove are unsummoned one by one, as Alcove quickly destroys the rest.

'Delgar, why are you helping Alcove? Surely you see she's just as bad as Balthazar?'

'That's what I thought, Arcadia. I hated her for killing you, when I saw you as a mage who had given her life for a rebellion I was afraid to risk mine for. But she has turned on Balthazar and tried to kill him, while you want to take over and rule in his stead. I can still hardly believe you would betray the rebels, betray all you have pretended to believe in so utterly. But you have, and now I feel no remorse for what I must do.'

With those words, Delgar begins to wave his hand round. Arcadia's body begins to diminish in size, until it is hardly half the size it was before. Then she begins to change, to blur, and shrink even more, and blur even more, until there is nothing but a small gem in Delgar's hand.

'Alcove, do you still have that Power Crystal?'

Alcove looks blank for a second, then casts a quick spell. The crystal appears in her hand. Delgar reaches out, and moves Arcadia's crystal into the same space occupied by the Power Crystal, so that the two crystals meld and become one.

'You must put that crystal through the portal, or we will never close it. Arcadia still holds it open with her will, though she can do nothing else.'

Alcove simply nods, glad that Delgar no longer holds his grudge against her but has accepted that he was in the wrong. She opens her mouth to thank him, but he suddenly disappears.

OOC: MSW, if you had a special scene in mind which that has spoilt, I'll edit my post, but I couldn't think of anything to do that would affect the main battle and I wanted to post...

2 things.

1) Could you please divide that up into paragraphs? Sorry, but several small paragraphs is far, far easier to read than one big horrible block of text, even if the words are exactly the same.

2) Are you asking for people to start RPing in this world, or just to add more background?

The portal, flickering madly, suddenly began to shrink. Faster and faster it (OOC: illusionarily, if that's a word...) shrank, until it had disappeared completely. Aghast, Balthazar stopped what he was doing, and tried to turn and run, only to realise that he had nowhere to go. Turning, he began to cast spells wildly, simultaneously trying to figure out what had gone wrong with the portal. (OOC again: Nothing is wrong, but he can't work that out instantaneously...)

Meanwhile, Eferas heard a voice beside him...Delgar's voice.

The portal's still there, but I don't think Balthazar's shielding it any more. If you cast the biggest fireball you can manage at where it was, the magical energy should destabalise it for several minutes more, or even destroy it if you've got that much energy left.

IMO, starting a successful RP takes effort. The ingredients that make an RP work are, as far as I can tell, a detailed setting and a clear but apparently unattainable goal (if the goal is to easy to achieve, there's no point, because people don't have to do anything imaginative, they can just walk up to the evil 'final boss' and cut him in half in post number five. And will.) Of course, decent imaginations on the behalf of the majority of the RPers are essential.

If you want to set up an RP that'll work, you need to plan, either on your own or with a small group, what the setting is and what the goal is. And I'd recommend you start a new thread, too-this one is full of unrelated.

And Warrior Kings, although I've almost given up on that. It's possibly one of the best designed and worst programmed games I've ever played, which is exceedingly irritating...the design is good enough to keep me wanting to play, but the gameplay is so bad that I keep giving up...

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

As the imp carried Delgar off to the tower, he wondered yet again why he had let himself get so involved...why not simply take the first boat off the island? Yet now he had no way out, no way of escape if everything went wrong. And he had to help Alcove...

At that juncture, the imp landed, dropping Delgar in through a window. In the room he landed in, there was a Power Crystal on a table.

Hmmm. Presumably, once Alcove has this, she'll be able to escape from that room...so she told the imp to drop me here. Logical. Now, where is she?

At that point, Alcove bursts into the room and picks up the crystal.

'Delgar! At last! We must hurry, the rebels cannot help to survive alone!'

'That's all very well, but I'd perfer to remain here.'

'What? Why?'

'Because I can preject an illusion just as easily from here, and this is about as close as I'd like to get to Balthazar...'

'If you're going to play it like that, you'd better hide in the strong room. Quickly, this way...'

Alcove shows Delgar the way to the strong room, where he will hopefully be magically shielded from Balthazar. In return, he cloaks her in a powerful invisibility shield, and sends her on her way.

It is asked a lot: there's a topic about it around once a month.

And although online turn-based games could work, massively multiplayer ones would be guaranteed to have problems. Either you'd have everyone who was online at once time taking turns, so that you had to wait to input a command while thousands of other people did their turns, or you would have turns only in combat, resulting problems like those mentioned already due to lack of synch.

Reaching his manor, Delgar hurries to the cellar, and looks into his scrying mirror.

Help! They actually haven't got a hope!

Thinking fast, Delgar scans the tower, looking for something...anything that will help the rebels. He finds something, although it's not quite what he's looking for.

Alcove! How did she get her power back so quickly! Never mind, that's not important. If she actually means what she's thinking about helping the rebels, I'll almost forgive her for killing Arcadia. But how to get her out of that room?

Delgar stands in silent agony for a second or two. Never before in his life has he done something so rash as to willingly go closer than he has to to someone who wants to kill him, but now it looks like he has to.

***

Alcove is sitting in her strong room, thinking desperately, when another head appears on the wall. Standing up to hurl abuse at Balthazar, she realises it is in fact Delgar.

'Alcove. No time for a protracted conversation. I'm coming to the tower to try and get you out, but I need to travel fast. Can you summon an imp and send it to my manor, with orders to carry me to the tower? I ought to be able to do the rest.'

'But inside?'

'Can't you summon through walls?'

'No, I need to be able to visualise.'

'Right...let me help.'

Suddenly, one wall of the cell disappears and the sky can be seen. Alcove reaches forward to touch it, but the wall is still there, just invisible.

'Just cast the spell, and fast...the portal will activate within minutes!'

Alcove nods, and begins casting. After a few seconds' rant, an imp appears outside the tower. At a telepatic command from Alcove, it turns and wings its way towards Delgar's manor.

Plus, it's turn-based, as all Jeff's games are (including Geneforge, although that's kinda mock-real-time, but the combat is turn-based...). There's no way a massively multiplayer turn-based game will ever be feasible.

I also quite like Rakshasi, mainly because they're so powerful, but I also think the Ursagi are cool...it's a pity there isn't more about them in the games...

OOC: No problems at all...although I hope I'm allowed to do what I'm about to; I don't particularly want Delgar to die, after all.

IC:

Delgar lifted himself painfully from the ground, head ringing. Looking around, he groaned.

'My magical equipment! All destroyed! This is a bit much...one thing to attack me, quite another to destroy all my hard work. Without it, I can hardly project more than a few metres. Still, enough to make me invisible...with luck I should be able to sneak aboard a ship. I don't think the rebels will have that much of a chance if he can do that...'

But just as Delgar is about to leave, already cloaked by invisibility, he stops.

What's wrong with me? Running away again? I should at least stay-maybe there's something I can do, although I don't know what...I'll get back to my manor, anyway. There's some equipment left there I can use, I think...

Delgar sets off on his journey, fully conscious that at his slow speed of walking the battle will likely be finished before he can intervene again, but determined nonetheless to see the rebellion through if he possibly can.
