My point about levels is that maybe you could just have them having three different names, but each of these names spans, say, five levels, and each time they change name they get a special ability (say ballistas get to damage buildings, or priests get to cure plagues remotely? I dunno).

About the random story-style specials: I meant that maybe you could put in a certain amount of story-style specials in the quickstart game.

Sorry, this is me doing the whingeing. I'm simply of the opinion that this image, and a couple of others like it, add nothing to the game while making it potentially offensive.

Meh, I suspect Djur is more right than wrong. However, I would just point out that my views in this respect are definitely not unique to me, even among Leylines' potential audience. Plus the fact that there is no real reason to put them in.

Could you then explain for someone who is being extremely dense and/or braindead exactly what the rule behind it is?

Um, the point I'm making about the background pictures is actually perfectly illustrated by the fifth screenshot down. That kind of background really isn't necessary. The rest look really cool, though.

Other points:

1) About the special terrain things: I think things like Monastery would be more logical if they generated, say, 5 research per priest camped there and 3 research per healer. Likewise mines for engineers.

2) I think the city happiness needs to be quantified-I don't like that I can't tell whether the happiness is going to go up or down next turn. Also, I think there should be a fifth job slot-something like 'entertainers' or 'jesters' which generate a bit of happiness automatically. Also, a rule called something like 'rugged individualism' or 'colonial spirit' which means that happiness can't change in settlements with a population of under, say, 5000-since, obviously, it's harder to make these ones happy.

3) About Leylines: since they share the name of the game, I think they could be given a more special property. I don't know what yet...maybe leylines are actually lines, that only show up in spell-casting mode or whatever, and if you have apprentice mages or wizards camped where they cross, spells on the leylines that you 'control' are more powerful. I don't know how clear that was...

4) Maybe you could put in some rules for random generation of 'story events'? Say there are some special terrain things where instead of you gaining some resource from going to them, a randomly generated text box pops up with something like 'This is a mercenary camp. You can pay x gold to hire troops here' or 'This is a dragon's cave. Do you want to enter' (and if you do, you have to fight the dragon but you gain some treasure: maybe some money, or a wand which you then give to one of your units to give it a powerful ranged attack, or boots of speed...loads of possibilities, really)

5) Experience generation for standing still doing nothing is too high. Also, it would be nice if there were more than three levels-maybe the stats change slightly at each level-up, but then they get a promotion after five level-ups, and get a new ability, like blessing becoming more effective, or more shots before combat for archers, or something. I dunno.

Sullust, it has been proven (don't ask me how, because I didn't understand the proof) that any non-infinite series of real numbers has a corresponding rule which generates the sequence.

On being automatically alt-tabbed out of Leylines by a chat window opening, and then trying to alt-tab back in, the program closes and I recieve this error message:

[TitleSc] Restoring display mode
[TitleSc] Operation requires the application to have exclusive mode but the application does not have exclusive mode.
[ScrnErr] Failed to initialize the screen.
You should reboot your computer and try again.
If the problem persists there may be something wrong
with your system setup.

Plus, clicking 'diplomacy' in the tutorial still closes the program without an error message.

The only way to get from the level editor to the main menu is to click 'file' and then 'quit game'.

Is there a difference between astral void and vortex (apart from the graphic, obviously)? If not, maybe vortex could go?

On the terrain list in the map editor, the bottom six options (mountain to archipelago, I think) appear at the top of the next list of terrain options. Note that this could be fixed if you removed vortex, since it would then all fit on one page-my reason for suggesting it in the first place.

The scripting language needs work. Specifically, your current scripting language is way to complex for non-programmers (like, say, myself. Actually, I can, or more accurately could, program in QBasic, and it's still too complex for me.) I've an idea for a simpler method, but it's only vague at the moment. I'll write it up and send you an e-mail.

One last thing: I don't think it necessarily adds anything to the game for all of the fullscreen background graphics to be semi-clad females. Just a thought.

On the positive side, the tutorial can now be played right through, and does indeed summarise the majority of the game quite effectively. And I like the little easter egg at the end.

Um, you can't do that. Square-rooting changes the units. 0.5 £^(0.5)=5(p^0.5), but £0.5 != 5p.

Nazgul, I hope you didn't just kill MSW's character. That would not only be very out of character for a GIFTS, it would be disobeying possibly the most fundamental rule of RPing.

Actually, since FB asked a few posts back, I'll just detail the things that would make me, personally, reject his character.

1) He can turn into a dragon. Any kind of dragon, even without a breath weapon or spells, is too powerful to be controlled by a player. Even a human-sized dragon would be pushing it a bit; really, any player that can fly needs to be feeble in all other respects, or they quickly become too powerful (a flying expert archer, for example...I'm sure you see my point...)

2) He can change shape, full stop. There's no point in giving a character weaknesses as a balancing factor, and then giving him another form he can use which doesn't have those weaknesses (For example, the one weakness of your dragon form was that he had no magic resistance, but your Slith was magic-immune. That isn't a weakness at all.)

3) He's both a mage and physically powerful. Having one character that can do everything is no fun for everyone else; a party can only have a proper adventure when everyone in the party has something to contribute. Thus, if you want to make a super-super archmage, give him limits-say he gets tired out easily so he has to rest each time he casts a spell, for example. And mages that can also fight better than average in close combat and have a ranged weapon-they're no fun at all.

I'm sorry if you feel my analysis is unfair, but I'm just telling you my problems with your character-they're probably similar to Firedrake's. If you want some tips on how to make a good character, PM me-I have plenty of free time (far too much, actually) and I'd be happy to help.

1) I think the best thing you could do is to start off an RP. You seem incapable of making RP posts shorter than 2 A4 pages, and posts that long are only good for introductions.

2) Spam is not just posting things devoid of meaning. Having every other post in an RP topic is spam, too, especially when your posts are dictating the plot. Remember, other people want to take part too.

The cameras in the room where Moriarty/Cyborve had confronted Sherlock had been very interested in what they had seen. (OOC: Incidentally, MSW, I suspect Zephyr doesn't know who Moriarty is/was, which may cause problems for whatever storyline you have cooked up.) Now, security bots grabbed Cyborve again. He was deactivated, and taken to a secret chamber deep inside the Spiderprise. Then, special GDI programming removed the Brotherhood's secret objectives from his mind, and replaced them with neutral objectives. As they did, the programming he had been given by the strange alien creatures resurfaced. His nature was to be controlled by the cyborg implants, and he was to endeavour to deliver himself and Sherlock Holmes to a planet. The ship searched its star charts, and discovered that the planet was in fact the one the ship was orbiting. As Cyborve was released, the cameras tracked with interest his progress towards the shuttle bay. First Lieutenant Sullust was contacted, and then, when he proved unavailable, Logalot.

OOC: Sorry, FB, but there's no way a Sherlock Holmes-Tiberian Sun merger is going to work. And given the choice, I'd prefer the more detailed story. And that's Sherlock Holmes, by a mile. I'd prefer even more if we could invent a completely origional story, but maybe we can leave that for later.

Watching from a distance, Rathlan can see that the Overlord's force was reliant on key figures for its power. The vampires kept some of it alive by their willpower, the small circle of black-clad figures, standing around the Overlord, channel the spectral energy for his spells, and the the skeleton captains and the dracoliches focus it. Aiming his crossbow, he fires gleaming silver darts at the vampires, who, assured of their invincibility, were fighting on the front line. Although the silver didn't kill them outright, it undid the ancient magic that maintained them. Now the vampires were mortal once more, and many of their minions disappeared as all their incredible magical ability was concentrated into keeping their bodies solvent.

Next, acidic bolts hit the skeletal captains, removing their heads and with them the sharp focus of the specral energy. The group's warriors ploughed through the weakened skeleton horde, heading for the dracoliches.

OOC note, since that's all I have time for: the 'theft' thing was meant to be Sherlock himself. Since he was entered on the cargo manifest, when he went missing from the hold it was treated as a theft. Anyway...

And firedrake, feel free to create your own plot-Sullust's doesn't look to involve anyone but him in the immediate future, so start something short and unrelated...

As Sherlock continues along the corridor, unsure both of the location of the captain and what he wants to do, he is confronted by a floating metal spheroid.

The future is strange indeed..., he thinks to himself. What on earth-or off it, I suppose-is this?

The spheroid answers this question for him, literally:

'You are under arrest for theft. Please return the stolen items immediately, or sanctions will be imposed.'

'Theft? What have I stolen?'

A pause, then:

'That information is classified.'

Another pause...

'You are the thief, so you must know.'

'I am afraid I do not...could you at least tell me where I am supposed to have stolen from?'

'The cargo bay'

'Ah...I think I begin to see. Was the thing I have stolen sealed inside a small cell with 'Exile' written on the side?'

A large pause, during which Holmes reflects that the person operating this sphere is obviously an incompetant, as they obviously do not know what he is carrying...he can't guess, obviously, that he is confronting an artificial intelligence, severely limited in its ability to take initiative. Finally, the answer comes:

'Yes. Now, return the stolen item.'

'I am afraid that may prove rather difficult. Is there anyone I could talk to about this?'

Another large pause...

'The best person would be Lieutenant Sullust. He is the owner of the stolen items. He is being contacted.'

Meanwhile...

Sullust and Logalot are deep in conversation.

'Sullust, I still don't understand. You say that the technology that trapped Holmes wasn't created by humans?'

'Yes, that's correct. I have explained this before, Logalot.'

'I know, but not to my satisfaction. How did it get inside that Egyptian tomb?'

'That's what this mission is about.'

'And did you have to take Holmes along with you? He comes from a completely different era, won't have a hope of understanding our world.'

'There must be a reason it was him who found that tomb, and that no-one else found it until just this year. I'm not taking any chances-this is a voyage almost completely into the unknown, and if there's the slightest chance he'll be useful, I want him with me.'

At this point the computer interrupts the conversation:

'Will Lieutenant Sullust please report to Briefing Room Eleven. A thief wishes to return some stolen property.'

'What's his name?'

'Sherlock Holmes.'

As Sherlock sat down for a bite, an inventory subroutine noted a defecit in the cargo manifest. Sending a 'bot to check the cargo bay, it discovered that an item in the storage space allocated to Lieutenant Sullust's personal goods was missing. A beuracratic subroutine noted that Lieutenant Sullust seemed to have far too much storage space allocated to his personal goods. Simultaneously, an internal camera record tracked the missing item to the cafeteria. A security 'bot left its slot, and sped in that direction...

Rathlan, inside the town hall, has set up a minature forge and is busy filling a clip of his repeater crossbow with silver bolts. As he works, he talks at high speed, attempting to piece together the events of the day.

'As far as I can see we have several enemies to contend with. Maestro, are there any more of those friends of yours that might have allied themselves with this Overlord?'

'Yes, there's one who hasn't yet put in an appearence. Donak, he trained me and the others. I was the only one who refused to go with them when they went to help the Overlord, and I am the only one who is now not his slave. Whether I can defeat him, I don't know. But I don know that he will have several necromancers with him; practically all the Blademaster mages defected when he did, and we've only seen about half of them.'

'Very well. As for the dracoliches, well, who knows how many of them there are or where they come from. All we can guess is that if there was only one, it would have been saved for the last attack. So we're expecting at least one more dracoliche, maybe two.'

Rathlan is silent for a moment. Then:

'And what about the vampires? Arianne, are your supporters winning the war or not?'
