As Balthazar begins to prepare spells to destroy the rebels, a huge (OOC: illusory) head peers out of the growing portal behind him.

'Who has awoken me?'

At the loud voice behind him, Balthazar jumps and turns around quickly. When he sees the head, he jumps again.

'Who...who are you?'

'I am Zorn, Lord of the Nether Pits. Who are you, that you would summon me?'

'I...I am Bal...Balthazar. I am the ruler of this island, and I require your aid! Yes! I have summoned you, so you must obey me!'

'The Lord of the Nether Pits does not obey the commands of mortals. What will you offer me, if I give you my aid?'

Balthazar stops and thinks. As he does, the rebels burst through the door behind him, forewarned about the illusion Balthazar is talking to and ready to destroy the ruler of Siris Island, ending his evil reign forever. Balthazar points, frantic.

'Destroy those men! I'll give you anything you want, just get rid of them!'

But the giant face in the portal only laughs.

Conversely, I'm sure just about everyone knows that jumping from a great height, a bullet to the head, or an overdose of almost any drug, are all fatal...and I don't think any other 'sure-fire methods' have been mentioned.

Just let the plot develop at its own rate...

IC:

Nodding his thanks to Lavius, Aran turned again towards the undead, and swept his blades in an intricate pattern in front of him. Lavius stared carefully, but couldn't follow it...

Did that guy just pass one sword through the other...yes! He did it again!

The pattern quickly minced the zombies in front of Aran, while providing adequate protection to stop them hitting back. As Aran moved slowly forward, however, the zombies began to raise themselves up again behind him. Stepping forward, Lavius began chopping them down as quickly as they rose...

I don't think you should necessarily be just allowed to commit suicide. People who want to commit suicide because of depressions which could be dealt with through counselling should be given the chance of life. Even, they should have live 'forced upon them', if you're going to look at it that way, because their decisions are affected by circumstances in a way they would not be were they given a better chance.

Of course, that does mean that a government that tries to stop suicides should make good quality counselling available to those who truly need it. And I don't think that's a silly position to take...although I can't see it happening in this country any time soon.

Delgar's spirit quickly disappeared. He knew how fast liches were to detect illusions. But maybe they weren't quite fast enough...

To the amazement of everyone in the room, Eve suddenly wriggled out of the liche's grasp, and darted forward. The liche cried out, and stepped forward after her, but seemed to fall over something...and then the something was Eve's body, and Eve was pulling herself back, away from the liche. The liche raised itself up, and laughed.

'Mortal worms. You think your pitiful tricks will help you survive? Even now the cold is seeping into your bones, into your very souls. How long do you think you shall survive?'

Aran had stayed outside the town, studying the elemental aura of the Cryobeast as it moved around at random, revelling in its newfound freedom. Eventually, he decided it was not dangerous to the townspeople, and got up to go, collecting the statue as he did so. As he got up, he suddenly noticed a crowd of strange figures in front of him...more zombies. Sighing, he headed forward, blades in fighting position. This was not combat, this was sheer butchery, with the zombies too slow to get around his defending blade or avoid his attacks...

A ghoul leaped from their midst and threw itself at Aran, easily avoiding his outstretched blade. Thinking quickly, he allowed himself to be thrown to the ground, then rolled over, landing on the ghoul. Under the incredible weight of his armour, the ghoul's fragile body was crushed instantly. The zombies had hardly begun to react before he was back on his feet, facing the remaining undead more cautiously...

The good Sliths-vs-Nephs topic was the one that got to 30 pages and was locked for consuming about half the board's memory in one massive topic. It died down at several points because only Corey favoured the Nephils, and he couldn't put up a coherent argument in their favour.

Aran approached the town gates. Looking out of them, he saw a crowd of zombies some distance off.

Turning to head towards them, he saw something in the middle of their cluster. As he got closer, he realised that they were gathered around a small statue. Not only that, but they seemed to be attacking it. Aran dealt with the zombies by the simple expedient of holding one blade out as a shield while chopping them in half with the other, then bent to examine the statue.

It appeared, bizzarely, to be made of ice. As Aran began to examine it, he recognised an elemental aura...

'A Cryobeast? Yet not a little ancient, if I mistake not...'

Bending, he picks up the statue and holds it in his hand, listening. The Cryobeast was imprisoned by an energy mage, who could not understand it but hoped instead to control it. The Cryobeast, unwilling to be the mage's slave, had locked itself inside the statue, and so the mage had locked the statue's portal from the outside and refused to come out. Fortunately, Aran knew how to operate portals as well...especially ones created by elemental creatures.

OOC: FB, you said you wanted to describe the portal, so I've set it up so you can. If you want me to change the post at all, drop me a PM and I will.

Aran heard the sounds of fighting, and ran around the corner (OOC: no, Aran running is not especially fast...) to see two guards being pressed against a wall by a multitude of zombies. Drawing his falchions from their sheathes inside his armour, he stepped forward. One zombie turned to react to Aran, but a glowing falchion swung down, splitting it from top to toe with apparent ease. The two halves split in half, starting to wriggle in the uncanny way undead will, before turning to stone and then crumbling to dust. Another two zombies, parted at the midsection, met the same fate, and as two more turned to face Aran, the guards jumped on the last, killing it almost as quickly as Aran dispatched his foes.

'Those're some fine blades you have there, sir.'

'Verily.'

The guard blinks, as surprised by the archaism as he is by the brevity of Aran's reply.

'Uh...where'd you find them?'

'Find? These were no find, but forged from the rock of the elements. Know you not the sign of the craft of the deeps? Ah, I see you do not. Alas, so much forgotten...'

The guard, deeply confused by this musing, turns to more practical matters:

'Another zombie!'

OOC: Zephyr, I'll try to introduce your character next time I post, if you're sure you want him summoned...since he appears to be pretty much an elemental and Aran is an elementalist, I should be able to logically justify it...

-E-

EDIT: Slith, the plot develops as we go along, although I suspect MSW will hijack it, especially as he is once again playing a mage who he specifically stated to be more powerful than the average character the last time he played her (hint, hint...). And MSW, how does Celisto recognise the difference between a necromancer and normal person who happens to be wearing a black cloak, especially at a distance? I'm not saying she shouldn't, I'm saying think of a reason...

OOC: MSW, we're half-way through the battle. If you want Alcove to suddenly regain all her powers and kill Balthazar, at least wait for it to end. And also, since we're half-way through the aforementioned battle, most of the characters are concentrating too much on staying alive to notice the tower shaking a bit. And if it shook more than a bit it would fall down, before you try to tell me it's swaying like a sapling in a hurricane.

IC: Delgar immediately summons an illusory darkness around the liche. The liche tries to move out of it, but the darkness follows it. Jade, waving her sword above her head, pursues the liche, muttering the power words to start the enchanted fire blazing across the sword. Suddenly, a skeletal hand waves out of the darkness and swings around, brushing it aside. Delgar's mental voice can be heard...

Ouch, that really hurt!

The liche turns to face Delgar, but as it does, Jade's sword sticks into it from behind. The heat warms the liche from within. The vast magicks keeping the lich alive fuse with the sword's enchantment, and in an awesome light show, fly around the liche in ever-increasing circles. Jade can only stare, awed, as the lights circle in on the trapped figure of the liche, reduced in seconds from amazing magical might to a crumbling heap of dust, which quickly crumbles still further until it is not visible at all. Recovering, Jade frowns at the sword-hilt in her hand, all that is left of one of the most powerful magical artifacts from Alcove's priceless hoard. Then, turning, she throws it to the ground, and turns to face Delgar, who is restraining Eferas from rushing to the aid of Shadow Wolf, still locked in mortal combat with the other liche.

'What do we do to help him?'

'Nothing, until either he or the liche dies. No magic can enter that field around them. The best thing you can do is seal the doors-there are still two more liches running around. Leave the one nearest to Balthazar's throne room open, we'll need it. Oh, and Eferas...if you could tell the rest of the rebels who Jade and I are?'

'Eferas! Jade! Hurry! We must go to the aid of the rebels, they've got a lich in front of them and three more hunting them down.'

'We're coming, Delgar. We just can't quite see, or walk, through walls.'

'Can't you run, at least? Oh, and give Jade back that sword. It's heavily enchanted, so it ought to be able to do something to the liches. No, not that door!'

But it is too late. Eferas and Jade are already half-way through the door before they realise there is a liche standing on the far side. Its back is turned, but for such an undead being this means little, as they realise when it begins casting a spell without even bothering to turn around...

OOC: C'mon, people, we've got to give this RP a decent ending...it's nearly there!

Aran looked up eagerly at the guard's statement. Awaking after centuries in communication with the elemental plane, he had found the world hard to understand. More had changed than he'd bargained for. The elements were no longer accorded their proper reverence, and his knowledge of the earth was of no interest to the energy mages of the day. In battle, however, he should have no trouble-slow as he was, zombies would be still slower. And his great malachite falchions would surely crush the undead in his path...

Rising slowly from his seat, the great warrior moved towards the door. His browny-grey armour, unimpressive and brittle looking, flowed as he walked like lava, the point of contact between his neck and the armour hardly discernible. The innkeeper looked faintly relieved to see him go-his strange, archaic speech and mannerisms were quite unnerving.

As Aran made his way towards the man who was obviously the guard captain, he found himself subconsciously glacing towards the hill where he had spent his centuries of learning. It was nothing but a grassy mound now, no sign remaining of the awesome and intricate temple building that had been erected to mark his achievement. Maybe, once these zombies were destroyed, he could recreate the temple. Starting a school of elementalism would surely be the most profitable thing in this degenerate era.

'My lord captain. At the bidding of yonder guard, I am come to lay my blade to your aid.'

'The zombies are that way, man. You'll be paid later.'

Raising one eyebrow at the man's tone, Aran turns and heads in the direction he pointed.

OOC: Think of him as a half-earth-elemental, or suchlike. I'll go into his abilities etc as I go along. And I'm sure that malachite falchions couldn't possibly be made to work, but I thought it sounded cool, so I put it in...
